    Winglets

In the case of full size gliders the vertical wing tip extensions control the airflow at the wing tip and in doing so improve the performance of the outer sections of the ailerons considerably. Also the overall wing tip drag is reduced, and thus it follows that the overall glide angle is improved. With regard to models one might debate this at length, but perhaps it is permissible to say that the bigger the wing span the bigger the effect will be.
  2. In my opinion the whole business of the instability of this forum is quite shameful "The ITs" apparently have not bothered to reply to David's comment above (last Tuesday) - where are they? The "management" don't seem to be taking any interest or applying a firm hand - where are they? Are we doomed to suffer forever on this forum? 😞 I still remember the good old days when it was not like this at all 🙂
  3. It was fairly easy to get rid of the paperclip. Likewise when I want help I will ask for it - but I find increasingly most online help does not work in this modern era
  4. These all look so great! It would be very good if RCM&E would republish all of these (and others) preferably with plans and preferably suitably modified for electric.
  5. Perhaps "fiddling with a live system is wrong" is a message that has not got through yet? Maybe our splendid moderators could be more insistent on this please.
  6. We never had these problems in the good old days I don't have these problems with other forums now. Someone must be responsible for today's problems maybe they could publish a timetable about when the forum will be up or down please And then get it fixed for ever.
  7. If you measure the Internal Resistance of each cell with an appropriate measuring device I feel pretty certain that you will find that IR of the difficult cell will be rather higher than the other cells. Trying to balance the charge will not really solve the issue as the chemistry is not really reversible. When a cell starts increasing its resistance out of line with the others it is time to think about a new LiPo.

    Log Books

On Tuesday we had a major power cut lasting about 11 hours - still no explanation about causes? How glad I was to have handy my slide rule, log tables, etc and to continue working all by the light of candles. In fact it was a very restful day - no computer nagging one, no floods of mostly meaningless emails etc etc. I also kept my phobile mone switched off just for the full experience.
  9. Have dug it? First thing the sort of material referred to is not the sort of thing I would want to view on a phone screen. Second thing there is no simple way to use a QR code with a PC. It seems to me that all the techies have lost their brains as nothing now joins together. Did it not occur to the magazine management to provide a website address as well a QR code for phone-aholics???
  10. Dear Moderators Just to add to Ace's comment today I found the following behaviour -- I thought that I would explore the silly blue button at left I turned everything off and why not I ask? The result is that if Analytics is turned off then all pictures disappear and further "more posts" cannot be loaded. If "analytics is re-enabled then the pictures and more posts return to "normal" This whole business is beyond a joke or is it the intended behavior?? even worse. It is clear that the Fantom Fiddler just does not have enough knowledge to do the system maintenance properly Please get a commitment from the Fantom Fiddler to restore a working backup immediately - oh I forgot he does not believe in backups. Please get a commitment from the Fantom Fiddler NEVER to fiddle with a live system and never to update the working system without a lengthy off line test that has been successfully completed. This has now been going on for weeks! When will it be sorted. Please do not reply "soon" a specific date is requested. Please don't try to minimize the effects of so small a temporary tiny bug - it is symptomatic of an attitude
  11. It is not at all clear why the little blue thing is needed at all. These sort of preferences are usually hidden away in ones account details and not stuffed in ones face all the time. Anyone without an account gets what they gets.
  12. Let us hope now that the fiddlers will fiddle only on an off-line test system and not on the live system Also so that in the event of a regression that the last working version (carefully stored) will be restored instantly
  13. If the silly little blue button for consent preferences at lower left is part of the cause of the pop-up problem I would recommend getting rid of it as it seems to provide no useful function. Most/all other websites handle this matter much more discretely. Though I guess the vendor has gone home for the week end?
  14. Dear Moderators Please could you tell the forum fiddlers not to fiddle with an online live system. It does not take a lot of imagination to understand that fiddling should only be done with an off-line test system. If a fiddler fiddles and seriously damages a live system then the rule is do not go home until a working backup version has been reinstalled At about mid night yesterday, not only did we still have the silly pop ups, it was also not possible to post and also when hovering the mouse over a members button at left the post/rep information did not pop-up All of this is quite indefensible for anyone claiming to be a programmer. This knowledge was available back in the mid/late 1950s. There should not be any short term niggles if people are working correctly. To me it sounds like a major failure not an STN. I think that we the paying members deserve to be warned in advance of any silly fiddle and told what is changing. It would be even better if ALL potential changes were put to a members vote before implementing. If as David suggests this is a vendor problem then stop paying the vendor and find some professional to do the job. Thank you RedBaron
  15. When people say "we value your privacy" one knows that the truth is the exact opposite. People who value my privacy will not collect any information about me at all. Or steal space on my PC or waste my time.
  16. Try MacWet gloves, not the golfing ones but the shooting ones. Hard wearing, keeps one dry and warm and easy to fly with.
  17. Those who can do £/s/d, hundred weights/stones, yards/chains and nautical miles can count in many ways mostly without the help of Phobile Mone. Some of us still have slide rules and log-tables in the hangar for when the power goes down (and maps in the car) I just wish that the folks in the post office could count still, they often get it wrong even with a calculator. Happy and prosperous NY to one and all 🙂
  18. My problem and solution may not quite relate to your situation, but.... I have a Qidi printer that I am very happy with. Some while ago I also had trouble with inserting an SD card and it not being recognised, other times it was quite happy with the SD card. Eventually I twigged that happiness was related to the SD card being present when I powered up the printer and unhappiness was related to inserting the card after power up. The solution was easy, whenever you need to insert a card power down first. Slightly annoying but not a major issue.
  19. It is all rubbish and completely incomprehensible. Just "Jobs for the CAA boys" paid out of out tax money If all the new industries that want to monopolize our skies can't fit in with what exists then it does not say much for whatever "technology" they have Every encroachment on our activities will only get worse. There will be so much code dithering about in the skies that it will be even worse that W10 updates A basic requirement of all these new industries should be that they prove their technology does what is required before they leave the ground for the first time.
  20. I must admit that I have only followed this topic intermittently but…. I do despair on the amount of time wasted just doing the posts, nothing wrong with the contents of the posts I must say immediately. All the while we are doing posts, discussing possible legislation, filling in surveys etc maybe we are being led to avoid the real issue. I do wonder if there should be any legislation at all on any model flyers, there never used to be. How many terrorists etc are going to read all the small print and obey our "laws"? I think about how many people in the vast bureaucracy of the CAA and related bodies there must be working on this matter. Bureaucracy gone mad, they have lost sight of the fact that the fewer laws the better. The more laws with ever more complication just mean that normal people such as ourselves will never understand it and just sign that we do. Also we should understand this will never get better, once the camel has its nose under the edge of the tent…….. Having been a full size glider pilot for most of my life I was a victim of what the CAA did to that body of hobbyists some years back. In my opinion after a vast amount of work they achieved precisely zero on the planned objectives and the glider pilots were bureaucratised and monetised completely unreasonably even to some of them exiting a splendid hobby. Interestingly the whole body of new requirements was unleashed onto the flying public before the requirements were finally published and glider maintenance people and owners just did not know what was really required of them for a very long time and nor did the people in the CAA who they had to contact. I would vote for them all spending their time on legislating that drug dealers and traffickers and illegal invasion boat handlers be forced to transmit ids to the Police and Customs people.
  21. 3D printing is something that you just have to get started in and evolve your requirements as you gain experience You can learn stuff from books but you really need a mentor in this area as everyone has different ideas. Don't waste a lot of time printing stuff from Thingiverse. It is OK but you need to develop your own work flow from Want to Finished Object. You need a slicer like Simplify3D this converts your design to codes that your printer can use. Fusion360 is an OK design program - but you will be trapped as there is no way to export complete designs in any meaningful way. Yes you can export drawings and solids but all the connections get lost. Personally I hate being "trapped" by software so when I discovered this drawback of Fusion360 I stopped using it and cut my losses and started using another design program. Filament - start with PLA. Avoid cheap filament, buy from long established sources. If filament colour is important to you, colours with the same name do not look the same when buying from multiple sources. So yes an excellent idea! It is not just for model stuff, a printer is very helpful for replacing broken stuff around the house with parts no longer available!
  22. AeroFred seems to have a plan, I can't login to look at it as they seem to have lost my details
  23. I really like the sleek lines. It really begs an EDF version.
  24. They are just great - allowing one to fly all models better in a wider range of wind conditions. On - for strong winds and gustiness Off - for kinder conditions
  25. The 10mm Sundeala that I use has never warped and is not glued down When it arrives just set it flat on your base board, turn it over every few days until it acclimatises to your ambient conditions of temps and humidity. If you end not being satisfied with that you can always glue it later, but it can't be unglued. In general I prefer not to use irreversible processes.
