A few years ago someone in the Department for environment and rural affairs decided all livestock farmers should have a licence to transport their animals to market, One had to do a course on line much like the model test it was basic. Being rather remote [poor internet] we had to gather in the village hall and take turns on the half dozen laptops provided by a chap who gave us the answers if you asked. We all passed and issued a licence to be carried and shown if requested any time transporting animals. We were fleeced £80 each for this evening out. It was to last five years I think. In that time my transport trailer/animals were inspected several times by Council welfare folk and RSPCA but I was never requested to show licence. When the time was up there was no retake and the whole thing faded away.😒 Guess they did not make any dosh from it.

One of the questions I failed on was operating in built up areas, something I don't. Another thing I note is that as far as the CAA is concerned BMFA qualifications do not count in the answers. I was surprised that a drone operator was not required to ensure a flyer operating his equipment was insured. Still I passed with 33 correct even though I just winged it. Taken a bit to update my BMFA profile being somewhat a computer noob.

And a drone hits a firefighting aircraft

That is a fair hole in the wing. Could very well have been a different story had it punched through the cockpit screen. -
The two layer covering is done for strength/paint reasons, tissue is easy to puncture and goes brittle over time. Normal Doculam is smooth and clear and does not take paint well even when scoured so tissue is put on top. However Matt or what is called Soft touch Doculam can be used and takes paint well. See feature on "working with Doculam on vintagemodelcompany.com site.

All the rules you can make can not guard against idiots. -
The position of what goes on in the airspace above one property is a rather grey area. Following a court case in 1978 of " Bernstein of Leigh v Skyviews and general". The outcome and judgement on the case is somewhat vague but it is where the lawyers still go for guidance for what can or cannot be done within the airspace above ones property.

The distance from me to Mt Snowdon is about 90 miles as an energetic crow would fly.

From my front lawn this morning. Ferry from Ireland making its way into Fishguard Harbour. Snowdonia/Snowdon visible on horizon above.

When I feed my chickens in the morning a whole gang of house sparrows and some dunnocks along with a hen pheasant turn up for a share.

I think you may well have nailed it there Brian, I have in the past paid CAA direct. A bit less confusion now. Cheers John.

Aw crap, this is the sort of stuff that puts people off. So where do I go to renew flyer ID and do test?
-
Right, sorting my model flyer CAA renewal and am now [confused.comm] Went to BMFA MEMBERSHIP PORTAL-JustGo.com and it just pretty much says pay your £11.13 to renew ones Registration with drone and model aircraft registration and education scheme. Nothing about having to do the test. Someone explain please. Have not put payment in.

Coastguard call out to a Yacht in trouble of Pembrokeshire coast towed in by Lifeboat. Before I had a chance to speak the captain he said " I have my yacht masters ticket" I said where did you get that, the Solent? How do you know that he said in surprise. I explained the Atlantic coast is very different kettle of fish and in days of sail sailors from here had no trouble getting a job anywhere in the world. At least he had a ticket and commercial fisher/lobster boats have to register but jo public could purchase just about any size of sail or powerboat and off to go.

From what I remember of the Kyosho Hyperfly it is not actually a helicopter, more of a powered gyrocopter that can only be flown in forward motion just like any RC gyrocopter/plane. Can not take off vertically or hover or even land vertical like a gyrocopter can. Has to be hand launched with some forward motion into wind, the tail has a fin [with pic of rotor on it] for direction stability. Hanging below the machine is the switch rod that allows the thing to power up when lowered. Landing is just like an aircraft, fly an approach reducing power until near the ground the arm swings up and cuts the power. Helicopter flying skill not needed for this one.
