Lighter aircraft fly slower, but not necessarily 'better' - in the normal UK windy conditions, some models often stay at home because they don't have the mass to cope with the wind comfortably.  As with all things in our hobby, it's a compromise.

  2. @Chris Freeman 3 It was this sentence of yours that I was querying.... "The heavier the airframe the less stable the aircraft will be so a more forward  CG will be required".

Surely the mass of an aircraft is irrelevant in determining it's balance point ?  You may feel more comfortable flying it with a more forward balance point, to avoid stalls (which will occur at a higher airspeed) but that's the only, tenuous, argument I can see.  AFAIK, when our slope chums add ballast to their models, they want an unaffected balance point, just more mass.....

More than happy to be educated.

  3. As far as I can recall, in the 10-30cc bracket, we only have two 'effectively' silenced petrol engines in the club. Both have pipes that cost £150 or so. I was once told that to effectively silence a petrol engine, you'll spend as much on noise reduction as on the engine itself....... probably a slight exaggeration!

Personally, I'd wait until the intended home for an engine is determined before shelling out on a solution that may be unsuitable  e.g. a nice shiny pipe may be ok on a sports model, but offend you on a scale model....

Sorry but I don't understand why that should be.......  I'm not saying you're wrong, but I don't see the reason why that should be...

  5. Having mown the runways yesterday, it seemed rude not to use them......

Spent a few hours in the cold and wind, with a sky full of light grey clouds - not good for visibility of a white Wot4!  Funny how this one, using the same gear as its predecessor, and set up the same, feels different!

Kev P brought yet another different model. And again commented that he should fly it more often.....

A nice, if chilly, few hours.

  6. Some lovely models there.

For those that don't know Flickr, you can scroll through the photos vertically, but if you touch one to open it, you get some additional info. And you can move backwards and forwards through the album....

    Update .....

Just touched base with my mentor ...... flying off for this weekend as there is a motorcycle race on ....... booooooooo.

But ..... hang on ..... on another much cheerier note ...... we discussed my progress and he reckons ...... I only have some circles, procedure turns and aborted landings to master and I shall more or less be ready to fly solo.

I have already done some procedural turns so not to concerned about that. My aborted landings will be taken care of in my next lesson as I am now achieving actual landings. Things could progress faster than anticipated.

I am also going to get him to put me into some " awkward " attitudes and let me work my way out of them. ( hopefully ) as you never know when you are going to foul up. The focus is on not panicking and achieving a recovery.

So ..... looks like the weekend after next ..... I'm buzzing and can't wait ...... where are my incontinence pads. .....

    Toto

    Good news toto...

You have missed the point, that's what the forum is for, seeking advice.

If you read totos other thread (First taste of the sky), you'll see he has received lots and lots of advice - often incorrect, misleading, or contradictory.  None of it resulted in a satisfactory ic experience........... any advice or comment I give is based on his past experience, and trying to minimise the risk of further disappointment.

I'll make no further comment on this topic.

  9. Someone who already had a house said ..... "come and see my current house, I've had loads;  I'll help you upgrade your cave safely, and help you understand how a house works"

Much better than the family in the next cave, who decided to have a go at building a house on their own. Because they had no experience, they didn't know what was required. It fell down in a storm and injured them. They decided houses are horrible, complicated things, so they still live In a cave.

  10. Nooooooooo. Toto has already had bad experiences with ic - the last thing he needs us to bolt his unfamiliar engine to a bench, and 'see how he gets on'. He has no real experience of starting, running in, or adjusting such an engine. And, in fact, is a way off being able to fly the model in question.

His highest chance of avoiding more disappointment (when toto can fly such a model safely) has to be to mount it into his model, take it to the flying field, get his petrol-experienced chum to check it out, then work together to start it, run it in, and make any adjustments.

Hopefully, it's staying in its box for a while.

    Other opinions are, obviously, available.

  11. I have a shoe box pretty much full of coffee stirrer sticks. Neither my wife nor I take sugar but replenish my stock each time we visit a coffee shop from one of the large chains...... They used to be used extensively to reinforce and repair foamies, now mainly as epoxy stirrers, so stock levels are high.

Somehow, I've managed to accumulate quite a number of pieces of carbon in various sizes to use as reinforcement...... probably salvaged from dead models as I don't recall ever buying any.
