  1. That's way out of balance, 4.200 volts is a nominal 100% charge. Is the charger set to "balance" charge? If not set it to (slow if available) balance and charge again. It may take quite some time to balance fully.

  2. October issue should be in shops 24th Sept, according to the Next Issue snippet in Septembers magazine. The timings always used to be Digital edition available on Friday before on sale date in shops and hard copy dropped through letter box on Monday/Tuesday after digital edition. Hard copy for subscribers seems to have slipped toward the end of the week rather than the beginning over the last 20 months, understandable during the uncertain times of the pandemic, but I would have thought that things should now be back to normal.

  3. To name a few:

    e-flite Turbo Timber Evolution 1500mm,

    FMS Beaver 2000mm ARTF,

One of the Riot variants, but fit bigger wheels.

I would persevere with high wingers until truly proficient. Warbirds and Multi engine models are a great more demanding of skill and likely to disappoint until you can handle them with confidence.

  4. You might also consider a Spektrum Avian ESC which reports motor current, volts, speed etc., via the ar6610t telemetry. They're not much more expensive than the UniSens unit, the 60 amp 6S unit is about £50, 80amp 8S about £69.

    Just a thought.

Edit - might be a few more £ now, model shop Leeds £72 for the 80 amp version.

  5. I bought this particular XR Brushless DeWalt drill kit with 4.0Ah batteries and charger about 5-6 years ago, to replace a trusted 15-20 year old Makita NiCd powered drill. It has proved itself a reliable, robust, powerful tool, well suited to professional and, in my case, enthusiastic amateur use. In my experience cheaper tools usually prove false economy in the long run. Their quality can be rather hit and miss and long term product support non existent. Quite often their lack of precision and robustness becomes frustrating and makes it difficult to achieve a satisfactory level of workmanship. Just my opinion you understand.

  6. I use 360Radar, a little on the background here 360 Radar. Available for PC and Android. Perhaps not as sophisticated as Flightradar 24, but it has the advantage of showing military aircraft as well as civilian. There are filters so that you can select Military, Civilian or both, plus many more options like overlays of military airfields and their controlled airspace.

Not free, but it is an app developed by the RAF Amateur Radio organisation.

  7. Extract from a recent email from LMA clarifying the current situation.

Flights over 400ft of model aircraft over 7.5kg

Due to a change in policy by the CAA, flights over 400ft of model aircraft over 7.5kg at defined flying sites will no longer be approved by the CAA. That means that the LMA and / or the BMFA must now issue a permit for flying model aircraft over 7.5kg over 400ft. BMFA can permit over 400ft flying with up to 25kg model aircraft and the LMA can permit over 400ft flying with up to 25kg model aircraft and over 25kg model aircraft.

  8. Traditional lead/tin solder is available from outlets like CPC Farnell, Rapid Online and no doubt EBay. Lead free solder takes some getting used to and wrecks soldering iron bits quite quickly. A 250g reel of good multicore tin/lead solder (like this Multicore Solder will last a very long time.

  9. Not so Brian, the use of lead, and other substances in manufactured items is restricted by RoHS. These regs do not however cover domestic/DIY use of lead solder. The use of lead based solder and components in plumbing was banned some time before the RoHS directives.

RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. RoHS, also known as Directive 2002/95/EC, originated in the European Union and restricts the use of specific hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products (known as EEE).

Just a thought, is there a capacitor (condenser) across the points? they can fail shorted when hot.

I agree. I don't like guessing without seeing/hearing the engine running, but that would be my prime suspect. The magneto points, coils and condenser all hidden from view are rarely checked.

    Thank you Roy, good advice.

All the electrics came from George at 4Max and he supplied the 3 cell 2200 I'm using.

I looked at his site yesterday for the spare battery but stopped when his site said it was insecure.

However, will check the meter side and think again.

He supplied the charger too, but it just goes from red 3 lights to green 3 lights. Took 20 mins to go from red to green after my flights this week.

Starting to see why everyone else had boxes of 'stuff' at the flying field!

    From George's 4-Max homepage:
