  1. Hey Jon, Quick update, I put 10ml of my purple fuel in a cup and let it evaporate. 10% left after a couple days. So I put some in the Storch and ran it... No issues. Weird. I'm seeing 7,300rpm on my 22x6. Only thing I can think of is I had some moisture on the jug somewhere? Not sure. The engine acts fine with it. I guess I'll think of the purple as my water injection fuel. lol. Everyone at the field loves the sound of the 300v as I cruise by at 1/4 throttle ! Joe
  2. Thanks Jon, I’m really happy with the tags. I got tired of my markings washing off over time and looking a mess. As for the fuel, I’m going to use the normal pink fuel. I’ll mix another gallon in a fresh jug and see if it’s purple. Don’t know why it would be. Purple doesn’t make sense to me. I got a new shipment of nitro and it’s from a different supplier than before. But both jugs were mixed with the same nitro. The only thing that’s remotely different Is I used part of a old (couple months) quart of Klotz that was the remaining bit from last mix and a fresh opened quart to fill my measuring cup. I reread the Klotz bottles to confirm I didn’t receive a incorrect quart. No difference. I’ll mix another batch and compare. While I hate dumping the gallon I’m not going to risk it if I can’t figure this out. Thanks Jon, I just wasn’t sure if methonal mixes took on different colors sometimes due to things like moisture or something. I know premade glow fuel changes color over time but to have 2 gallons so different and be mixed within 10 minutes of each other kinda stunned me. I’ll let you know what I find. Seems so simple.... Has to be something I did. Joe
  3.   Ok Guys, I just mixed 2 gallons of fuel. One looks as I expected it to look and turned purple.... obvious answer is I messed up the mix but I can’t see how. I use a measuring cut marked for the mix. 1 part nitro, 1 part oil, then my methonal. Have you ever seen this? Maybe some old fuel in the bottom of the jug or in the pump lines? The jug had been fully emptied as far as I knew but may some was left in the lines? LINKY to see mixes Unless you’ve seen this before I’m leary of the purple mix. Out she’ll go. I just can’t imagine I messed up the mixing. Joe
  4. Hey Guys, I guess this is kinda technical. I needed a way to mark my fuel jugs to see at a quick glance my Laser fuel from the 30% CoolPower I use for Saitos. Both look identical. I found these and they are very well built. I got 5 of them and I'm very happy with them. LINKY to Cool Tags Enjoy. Joe Front and Rear of the same tag.
  5. Thanks Guys, I started to doubt myself and then down the rabbit hole of the interwebs I went. Next thing you know I’m reading all these options and “experts” posts. I’ll just keep doing what I’ve been doing with the OS F’s. Cleaning up my flight box is going to take a lot longer than this did ! Joe
  6. Perfect !! Thanks Jon. The PDF got me wondering. I’ve always used F’s. Didn’t know what I might be missing. Joe
  7. Hey Jon, Besides the Storch project I'm flying some other Saito warbirds and other stuff so I need to replenish my field box(and clean it out, it's a mess right now) with Glow Plugs and some other stuff. I normally just get OS F plugs since everything I have is a 4s but got wondering what you recommend so I went looking on the threads and did a search for Laser Instructions which gives me a PDF instruction sheet. It took a little while since there are threads here, on RCU, and of course the web site. I found you recommending the OS F in a few posts and the PDF say's this Most standard 2-stroke 'Hot' plugs work well. We use Super Tigre and Model Technics F5-7 but experiment with your favourite type first. O.S. and Enya 4-stroke plugs work well. The Fox Miracle plug and some others do not work with the Laser. Can you talk a little about your thoughts on plugs? OS F's are easy. I know nothing about the other plugs and as long as I'm refreshing the box should I try something like an OS 7 for the Storch since it'll be at mid to low throttle most of the time? I get the feeling Glow Plug discussions are like asking the race car guys about oil.... Endless chatter and I've never really tried other plugs to have any feel for reality vs fiction. My limited search finds the OS F is a medium heat range plug. When I tried to compare that to others I started to see lots of arguments about which others were as hot or not.... Blah blah blah.... Enya #3 seemed to be well received. Looks like the hot plugs may be suited for straight Methonal ? Sorry, I feel like I'm opening a Pandoras box. Would a hotter plug help the idle ? Thanks Jon Joe
  8. One last question, I'm running the flexible extensions. Would I do better with the mufflers? I would put them about 4inches away from the head by using the flex extensions and some silicone tubing as connectors. Would the back pressure help my idle? Joe
  9. Thanks Jon, I’ll revisit it in the next day or two. I hate having to ask questions you’ve gone over and over. Thanks for the video, I wasn’t sure about the breather. I know an 1800rpm idle is really well tuned. I was shooting for 2,500-2,600 since I’m still breaking in. What do you target for a new 300v idle range? Joe
  10. Hi Jon, It’s the 300v running 10 & 10 with Klotz. Ok, I’ll keep tuning and replace my breather pipe. It’s the only thing I can see that’s out of the ordinary. I used standard fuel tank tubing brass tube along the strut with new black Nitro fuel line since it looked good. The length of my drain is about 1 1/2 feet, maybe a little more. As I think about this, that black line is very thin and flexible compared to standard silicone line I’ll check for pinching. The left side cylinder never dies and the right side it really wet around the back of the head and started to leak dark oil from the rocker cover. The engine is still breaking in. I looked to see if the carb was seated or I had some other issue. Everything seeems tight. I lost the cylinder in flight at about 1/2 throttle cruising and trimming the Storch. I’ll keep tuning, the one cylinder gave me fits and I never trust myself. Thanks Jon. Joe
  11. Hey Jon, Flew the Storch !! Flew great. But I’m having trouble keeping the right side cylinder lit. It seems to load up and I’m getting a good amount of oil from the rocker cover. My current thought is my drain is too small and loading that cylinder with excess oil. I’ll swap the drain. Would a drain that’s too long, too small, or both load the right cylinder with oil and cause it to go out? I ran the drain down the long landing gear struts to try to keep the fuse cleaner. But I think the lines I used were too small for the distance. It’s going to be awesome once I get the cylinder to stay lit. 20lb plane 40lbs thrust and I as seeing about 7500rpm on a 22x6 Xoar. Once I get things settled I’ll report the final tune numbers. With both cylinder lit the Storch felt great on the sticks. Joe
  12. Hey Jon, Yea, the issue with the Storch is the slats and as you're noting many of them are flying with too much pitch. 20x8 is common on lots of engines and motors. They rip around and can't get them to fly level at those speeds without going way forward. I think they may be overflying the slats to a degree that the slat becomes the leading edge of the wing. Their cg makes perfect sense if you count the slat as the leading edge. I will probably end up closer to your 38mph. The first videos you find when you google the BH Storch are kinda hard to watch. CG confusion and no rudder input when trying to turn. The German set ups fly like your expect to see a Storch fly. THey do trim the ailerons down 3-5mm like a flap. The full sale dropped the ailerons (if I remember correctly) 20 degrees when the flaps were fully down at 40 degrees. Not sure if I copy the full scale or just do the 5mm as they did. Hoping to test next week but next weekend I'm in the 7... Joe
  13. Thanks Jon, I had written a response late last night but when I went to post it I was timed out.... I gave up as I was on the iPad. Yup, I have a lot of testing to do and I'll report what I see. The Storch is a weird beasty. I've set it up per the guys in Germany flying the BH Storch. They cracked the correct CG for Storch like flight. There are many flying with a CG 30mm ahead of theirs but those fly faster and don't have that great Storch slow flight look as they go by. Never had a plane where I could show you videos with CGs 30mm apart and you'd think both are perfect at first look... The German set up came from their forums and you're correct about the pitch speed. For now... I'm shooting for 50mph as top pitch speed. I will go down as needed. One of the German planes is set up as a tug also and they had a short discussion about the Storch not flying fast enough to tow. I can't see myself towing up too many Glass Slippers so I don't think that's an issue. Vintage wood wing gliders is what I'm setting things up for in this project. Once I get this going I'm thinking I'll be able to idle around at lower rpms and have the extra speed as back up and if needed. I'll probably keep tuning till I get things matched. More to come as I have anything useful. Joe
  14.     Thanks Chris, Yup, I'm with you. I started with the 21x6 since it was easy to get but it's right at the edge of the upper rpm band. When I run numbers the I think I'm headed toward a 21x7 or 22x6 WWII.... I think. I have both on their way plus a 22x7 WWII. I also have a Wilga 22x7 carbon prop on its way. It's a weird looking thing and I'm guessing too much prop but I'm tired of guessing. lol I thought there may be someone flying a 3D style aircraft with a 300v that may have experimented with these larger diameters and various pitches. I'm having the 21x7 and 22x7 WWII prop custom made by Xoar so I'll have tried everything I can when done testing. As always, I'm running 10% nitro and 10% oil. The Storch is the most confusing project I've ever done. It flys well but at two completely different CG's. I have a theory on why but that would just start a huge off topic discussion here.🤣 I'll keep you posted with as much data as I can as I go. 15. Hey Guys, Anyone flying a 300v on a 3D or slower stye aircraft ? I just fired mine up in my BH Storch a couple of nights ago. I'm getting 9,090rpm on a 21x6 and I'd like to get the rpms down into the 8,500 range. I could go less but I'm trying to get as much thrust as I can get and my target is in the 50mph pitch speed range. The Storch is set up as a glider tug so I'm hoping to get as much pulling power as I can and a 20x8 pitch prop just seems too fast. I've contacted Xoar and they can make some 7 pitch props which I think may be useful. The 50cc 3D 2 stroke guys fly a 23x8 as a common standard. Has anyone flown(or tested) a 23x8 on a 300v ? If Jon wern't on Holiday I bet he'd say "if the 23x8 turned anything over 7,000rpm your good" lol... I'm running 10%nitro and 10%oil. Joe   Edited By Joespeeder on 31/05/2018 21:57:27
  16. Hey Jon, Yup, those intakes will be cut open, and the rear of the intake "bumps" opened like the scale vents. Plus I'll open all the exhaust ports to vent the cowl out. I have several ideas so far and I'll post the details when I get there. I used card stock on the La5,following your lead by opening the exhaust tunnels plus I have holes in the bottom of the cowl due to the mufflers. The trick part on the La5 is the scoop I made on top of the cowl. The front inlet is structured to blow intake air down onto the engine but there is a divider inside the scoop that blocks off the rear of the scoop from incoming air. The rear of the scoop is open to the inside of the cowl and to the rear of the scoop creating a suction and drawing out air from the top of the cowl by the firewall. The inlets to the jugs are card stock all the past the center line of each jug with only about 1/8 - 1/4 inch max clearance forcing the air past the jugs in a very directed manner. Card stock is very easy to shape and once soaked with CA is very tough stuff. I'll do something along those lines on the Mig but it'll be a while as I have a D9 to build this winter and laser inventory should be up and running by the time I get to the Mig.   Edited By Joespeeder on 19/12/2017 21:38:26
  17. Hey Jon, Here are the shots of the Russian Storch.... lol I just wanted to see how the 300v fit into the ESM Mig 3 cowl. I couldn't get it all the way forward into the cowl but you can get a general idea. I will make some cardboard cutouts to see how the 360v might fit. If I could get the 360v in there without cutting the jowls out of the cowl it might be an option. The front edge of the blue tape is where the front of the firewall is inside the cowl. Either way I can see CA soaked cardstock duct work will be needed to feed cool air to the jugs.   Joe Would be very cool to have you join us for some warbird flying over here. I keep saying I want to go to the Goodwood Fesivtal of Speed so my coming over there may be more of a reality. Hmmm...         Edited By Joespeeder on 19/12/2017 18:30:17
