  1. You know the scenario favourite trainer flies in wind starts first touch and a joy to fly , 2 deadsticks second one a little more terminal . Boomerang now is truncated up to LE engine tank etc all off . Everything to rear of LE fine untouched and secure so instead of chucking it how would I start to repair it ? I suppose it doesn't have to be exactly as was just strong enough to take engine and tank , 2 of the formers are still intact but all the thinner ply is confetti . I have a buddy with a new ARTF Boomerang should I trace that and start from there ? I have no sides to build to and the original was ply skinned in balsa . I thought maybe 4 longerons epoxied to existing frame then formers and finally skinned in balsa unless anyone has a better idea ! If you make the front too heavy would that shift the cog to far forward ? Does the cog change if change the design. I will try and get a decent picture to show what I mean tomorrow . If enough votes to bin it I might just do that !
  2. Thanks Philflyer lots to get to grips with there , I thought replacing the carb was a vast improvement but who would have thought increasing the oil would give even more smoothing . I'll try it as I need to mix some fresh about now . Pity it doesn't make them any quieter as well that would be a result - thanks !
  3. Just an update on the NGH 9GT , I have 2 of then one older with pump separate and blue head , the other a new one silver head and carb and pump all in one . The older one has been a nightmare to setup and the newer one piece carb job is a pussycat to setup. So you guessed it out went the old carb and pump in went a new carb from Just Engines and hey presto it's much easier to tune and transitions nicely now. The only problem is both engines run on Just Engines quiet silencers but are still very loud , anyone any ideas on how to get them quieter ? Just to set the scene on the test bed I run them whilst wearing ear defenders otherwise my ears ring . Saw a suggestion somewhere to drill and tap the outlet pipe to M4 and adjust to suit noise wise , does this work ? My SC46 glow sounds positively Rolls Royce quiet next to these 2.
  4. Hi Alan only went with wooden because it's eventually going on Tiger Moth , any others that look right on a Moth ?
  5. Quick question Saito FA40a with wooden prop and a nice brass domed nut , does it need the supplied washer or just the domed nut ? Total brain fade here can't decide .
  6. Sorry Martin just rubbed the sleep out of my eyes the picture shows the main Rx getting 5 times the dropped packets of the satelite , shielding issue maybe ? I like my aerials stuck out in the wind but I'm a radio commissioning engineer so a little anal about that. I've had worst figures and absolutely no problems , we give ourselves an indicator then stress over what it tells us !
  7. In my limited experience with orange receivers and DX6/8 transmitters that's not too bad , no H data . I think that's 40 odd consecutive dropped packets for one H . Dropped packets are inevitable and you will never get 0 it's just not possible , try it on the bench at home and you'll still probably see some packet loss . Otherwise I wouldn't stress about it , incidentally the other figures come in with satellites connected and can only improve the situation . If you can find an app for your home broadband which is on basically the same band 2.4g to look at dropped packets you would be appalled by the lost packets but you just wouldn't notice because they are immediately sent again until they receive correctly. I do think we are too quick to blame RC links today , if your aerials are well placed and the power supply is good then it's unlikely to be a radio fault.
  8. I had a similar start 2 years ago in the hobby with an Apprentice and once instructor and I mastered wireless buddy boxing ( the way to go ) it was ok while I learnt the basics . Had an elevator part company and crashed , fixed and who didn't put enough glue on fin and crashed again . Then found the AS3X was doing some strange things so replaced it with a straight 6 channel and know I started to learn , yes got blown about a bit and sometimes very inelegant but somehow much more fun than "assisted" flight. Basics coming together at this point I bought and fitted out an Epioneer with 62in wingspan a bit more weight , this one I managed a midair crash fixed , then a battery fell out crashed fixed - you get the idea lots of heavy landings but lashings of epoxy and back to field . I know had something I could fly in a wind with no bother at all even to level of saying to instructor " leave it I've got it " A test fairly flew by and then I really started learning . I still have the Apprentice and 2 Bixlers and they are great fun but on a windy day Epioneer for electric or 46 powered Boomerang are the go to guys . In hindsight I would have bypassed the Apprentice and gone straight to Epioneer and saved myself 7/8 months but everyone's different.
  9. Update Cleaned in dishwasher scrubbed and it all became clear . Carb looks like a write off rusted too much , crankcase seems to have lost some metal towards the rear and the backplate is crumbling , head looks ok even glow still works . Hole in crankcase is the killer though but I have a serviceable crank , head , exhaust and liner/piston/connecting rod so not total loss as I have 2 more SC46s that might eventually need bits . Thanks for advice everyone. On a slightly different note started my first 4 stroke yesterday Saito FA40a on test stand , what a revelation in smoothness and throttling compared with a SC46 ? The 2 strokes sound positively thuggish compared to the Saito , this started straight out of box idling away hardly any noise or vibration and all I did was a 3 turns out so not needle sensitive - think I might be a convert ! So what size to replace a 46 2s then ?
  10. Hi guys Quick search did not find me anything in forum but I suspect it's been asked before . I lost an Arising Star about 6 months ago and yesterday the club mountain Man found it with its nose buried in soil , it took him 10 minutes to dig it out with 2 screwdrivers so pretty deep in soft soil . The airframe cost me £15 pound with a spare wing so no great loss but the engine was brand a new SC46 I very carefully ran in on the bench before using . Question is how to clean it before getting a look inside ? The carb inlet is solid soil but it looks undamaged at the moment . Would jet washing the rubbish off first help or a gentle wash in sink with warm water and a toothbrush or letting it dry out first then cleaning it ? Obviously it has to be very clean before opening or even wd40 the screws etc . Any thoughts on best way to proceed from here while it's wet an muddy. Just a thought while do we search much closer in than where the actual plane crashed ? Do we think without our guidance it won't go far ? FYI it was 150 metres further into brambles than where we were looking. Usual proviso any help even mild Micky taken appreciated
  11. Thanks also Jon just noticed your post , as relative newcomer I need to get that knowledge that some of the more expierenced guys take for granted . i.e if it does x then it's lean or vice versa so just getting my head around it .
  12. Thanks John I'll print that off and try it again , I don't think I'm far off being correct but would rather do it on the bench than in the air . Am I right in thinking being petrol that once it's set up it shouldn't need to altered to often ?
  13. Hello all , I am fairly new ( last 2 years ) to IC engines and thought I would replace some of my SC/ASP with NGH 9CC petrol . It promptly arrived from Just Engines and had the usual almost comical instructions on setting up but it did say should run on settings as supplied and it did. Okay so far couple of tanks through and it starts to ease a little doesnt stop much now at low revs and can be taken up to about 10500 rpm for a few tens of seconds and holds it nicely . Tickover can get down to around 2500rpm but i notice quite a delay when you open the throttle wide it doesnt hesitate as much as build slowly to full revs over several seconds but appears happy there . Its got a normal range prop on (11x6) and is on 20:1 oil/petrol . Do i need a: a few more tanks through it or b: do i need to adjust slow running needle and high running needle to balance it out , if that being the case what is the procedure please ?. With glows I never touch the slow running screw once set only the main needle , so was wondering if the procedure is different for petrol . I know i might be told bin it and buy OS but not got OS money at moment. Any pointers appreciated thank you. P.S. only had 4 tanks through it yet but starts and runs reasonably cool but is even with Just Engines quiet silencer is still quite loud , a lot louder than a SC46 glow with the same silencer.
  14. Geoff your a man after my own heart , I tell the wife I'll keep that you never know when you want it , she tells me it's junk I throw it and the day after you need the same ! I never say what's all that wool and material in your workroom for because that's a one way ticket to the doghouse !
  15. If it's any help .DLLs should go in one the system folders i.e. c:\windows\ system(system32 if 32 bit) not in the program folders as the pointers in the program tend to look in the system folders for DLL files . Do a search for .DLL files and look where they mainly are on your machine and drop a copy in there as well won't do any harm anyway . If it works Bob's your mother's brother and if it doesn't then I have only wasted a minute of your time - computers are only as bright as the idiots that write the software !
  16. Thanks for replies might look out for something smaller in the 45/52 range then the choice of airframes opens out again . The SC 46 that I lost came up cheap on the BMFA website so I'll keep looking at ads and save the ASP 75 for annoying my neighbour when she has a barbecue it's great for blowing the smoke back over her garden and drowning out her yapping dog ! Cheers
  17. Prefer ARTF to kit bit short on room in workshop/loft and thinking of transport anything much bigger than 66in one piece wingspan might have trouble fitting in a small to medium Skoda.
  18. hi all, I picked up an unused ASP 75 sometime back but am unsure what to put it in ? . Until Saturday I had a Arising Star with SC 46 which I just got running properly when it totally loss control and went down in heavy woodland , not found yet but taking 17 year old grandson better eyes better legs to look today. So something nice and docile to fly and get used to IC as passed A but still improving hopefully . Arising Star was just right as learned on a leccy Epioneer and am happy with that learning a bit more on it. The similar Seagull Boomerang etc would be a bit overpowered on a ASP 75 or would it ? Anything else take the 75 and be a easy fly ? If a little overpowered throttle always available .
  19. As a recent A cert I was a ittle nervous about flying the Mini , the club chairman made it look easy as did our resident wonderkid (15) . So I dialled it down to 50% for me , someone launched it and away it went with me struggling to hang on to it ! I came down a line of trees and tried to turn away but 50% was maybe too much reduction as I just could not turn in time and took a clean 2 inch bite out the leading edge game over . Built a 40% enlarged version with about 120watts per pound and got someone to test it weekend where it flew a lot less manic than standard Blitz , I'll have a go when wind drops a bit but maybe not to much rate reduction this time ! I'll post how it went either way .
  20. You know when that gust of wind landing spoilt your day , then that Berk in the Audi carved you up on the way home and you banged the tail out of alignment getting the plane out of the car ? Let it all out on the phone to the scammers and get a list of Hindi swearwords from Google or local newsagent , enjoy yourself !
  21. I went to the field by myself just in case I made a total arse of it but as suggested it was a piece of cake . As I only passed my A a few weeks ago im very pleased to get my first handlaunch and fly under my belt. Thanks for help and encouragement guys.
  22. Had a go at launching the Bixler today while I won't win any prizes it goes fine from hand launch both left and right handed so no problems . The cover on the wing started to come loose so had to abort just needs at bit more UHU and I have taken the precaution of taping over everything with glass reinforced tape. Still think the decals are rubbish have taken most of them off before they fall off but overall still a good buy and lots of fun.
  23. It flew a treat today club chairman took it off for me and trimmed it then I flew it for 6/7 minutes and manage to slightly overshoot field as it didn't want to come down and i wasn't man enough to engage flaps yet as I've not done the elevator mix yet. Otherwise superb and docile and pleasure to fly with no particular vices other than a bit floaty , excellent at the price .
  24. So basically not unheard of to have a little nose weight that's what I was looking for , mine I hammered the lead flat and put it under battery and hold the battery with foam to stop it moving . Not much room for sausage fingers in that nose so velcro was out. I'll get it airborne soon as the wind dies down a bit but as I have only just passed the A may get someone else to maiden it. 2600 mAh batteries are a thought as they are little heavier not keen on passengers even if it is lead , prefer to balance with battery if possible. On another note how are they on hand launch and landing as I'm still a bit nervous nelly with something new ( give me ePioneer or Apprentice I'm great - guess what I learned on ?)
  25. Don't forget J Birkett Lincoln that's still going and a treasure trove of bits you barely new were still around , lots of new parts that were first new in the 1940s . It has resolutely avoided having a modern webpage just a page with opening hours etc . Bought old round ammeters from him years ago came wrapped in greaseproof WD cardboard boxes - lovely .
