I'd never start my 26cc without a leccy starter.....even with the choke closed i'd be there all bloomin day!!.. Doesn't seem to harm anything so far as i can see.

I 'll check the tech specs on the orange/red high temp silicone i've used on my wrapping experiment and post it here tommorow if thats a help to anyone.  

After running in on a bench which is obviously very noisy i first run my engine up over the lawn...Sounds very quiet i thought but when i first took it to the patch and took off i though holy shish.....it does sound great but boy was it noisy. My work friends tell me they can hear it pretty clearly it over a mile away!! Remember your nieghbours thats all i'd say.

Hi MikeIn last months magazine there was a nice little article on just this problem. I have a CRRC26Rcc engine which is pretty noisy to say the least so i tried wrapping the can in fiberglass and high temp orange sealant as it shows in the mag and i have to say it really does sound a lot better. I should have done a Db check before and after but its too late for that now. I might add some silicone tube to the exit hole when i next go out to see if that helps/hinders. Going up a prop size from 16x10 to 18x8 to 18x10 also really helped too. I like the look of the alternative silencers from Just Engines but i'll have to save my pennies for one of those. Good luck.

I really like the sound of it and it might even convert me to 2.4ghz on that feature alone. Ok you're never going to watch it for the whole flight but then when do you use the instruments in your car....my guess not very often and only then do you just have a quick glance down unless there is an alarm. I think its a fantastic idea. Especially the battery monitor. I use telem data almost every day in my work and it can be very useful.

The Arising star has a flat bottom wing and the Boomerang has a semi symmetrical wing (curved top and bottom). I learn't on the Boomerang and i believe this type of wing handles the wind a little better and it will be a bit more aerobatic than a A-Star when you eventually reach that stage...baring in mind its still a trainer and not a 3D machine!!. Its a good size model so you won't loose sight of it. Doesn't cost the earth and is very forgiving. To be honest you'll need all the same equipment to fly the Jumper so you might as well go slightly larger if you have the room/extra pennies. I loved mine.

Really David!! I'll have to look into that. I think i'd want to seal it after just for piece of mind but it could be a good place to start. So i've had a little bump and i've repaired the damage now all i need to do is recover (probably with Solartex but i'm open to suggestions) and then i need to respray the wing to match the fuz. Problem is i can't decide which colour to go for. Humbrol Dark Green 30 is a pretty close match but would cost me a small fortune in little cans to cover a 71" wing so can anyone suggest either a ready made covering in the correct-ish colour or a paint that looks like the dark green in the photo.

Points taken Tim and in replyAfter another 30years of flying (and if you can stand Sloping for 10 hours a day for 4 days running then clearly you have still got it in you) how many more crashes are you likely to have which could potentialy be down to radio issues. Maybe its too soon to judge. Non i hope but there is every chance that you'll have an unexplainable incident or 3. It comes with the sport unfortunately. If it turns out to be a "new technology" issue you will say so won't you.You also say it has an improved respone rate....just how much faster is it and would the average flyer notice the difference....Maybe when you start talking 3D Heli's and dynamic soaring maybe there is call for it ultra fast reaction times but would anyone else really notice?. I suspect not. (please if there is someone reading this who flys you're average Sunday hack who has gone 2.4 that can say "yes i notice the difference" please step fwd now). Surely the comments in posts above ie "the main reason for changing was not that there was anything wrong with the way it worked" and you even said yourself Tim "I am NOT saying that 35mhz is no good- of course it is" just goes to show that maybe we should just pause before rushing out to empty our wallets of beer tokens for something that is pretty much the same as what we had before. Clearly a modern car is leaps and bounds in front of a 50's motor but i bet your nice new car comes in a new shape/style and does loads of things your very old ones didn't.....My question is forgetting the obvious costs what would a Spektrum DX7 (other manufacturers are available) do for me that my JR 378 can't.....I'm still not convinced that its so different i'd want one.....now if you said it now comes with say an Auto landing system (i sometimes wish) or something like that then my ears would prick right up. Why do slopers like yourself now use composite materials.......because it enables you to do things you can't with balsa and ply. I'll look for the info i came across on the binding issue and post it when i find it for you to read....it might have been on another forum but it talked about a problem when folk bind to their models around others when they are flying.

I kind of half agree with you Tim and half agree with ken.....I'm not totally convinced that 2.4 is as bullitproof as everyone would like to think. For every 35Mhz crash/loss of signal story there is always a 2.4 story of the same thing. I haven't been flying all that long compared to some but i'm on 35Mhz and don't ever see me leaving it until i simply can't buy it any more or something so good comes along that i'll be tempted. Battery life is longer...well i don't know about you but i generally charge up my TX before i go to the field and its still got plenty of charge in its 2500Mh Hydride after a good afternoons flying so unless you're trying to break longevity records i don't think most people will ever find the limits of that either.I do like the turn up and fly with no peg systems. Thats a good step fwd.Yes the aerials are neat but again positioning is crucial and i've heard things about cross binding etc.So many other things use 2.4 technology phones/playstations and anything else with bluetooth technology that i'm just a little concerned that in time it too will become swamped.The manufacturers will always come out with something new every year or so...thats how they make their money and i'm all for development but when it just replaces something that does the very same job its easy to see we're slaves to clever marketing. Just look at TV's in the last few years....wide screen to Plasma to LCD to HD to 100hz to 200hz to 400hz to LED to 3Dtv and on and on and on and what do they all do...the very same job as you're old CRT from 10years ago only with a slighty clearer picture..(oh and they don't take up half the lounge), but you get my drift. I drive a 30 year old Honda 112 miles a day doing 40mpg.....i'd say thats about average mpg by todays standards so why should i change it. Yes i can think of lots of reasons but non so compelling that my wallets coming out any time soon. Please don't think i'm being just an old misery....trust me i work in an inustry (F1) that the latest thing/gadget/material is the only thing to use and i find it unbelievable wastefull what goes on but thats the length some people are willing to go to to succeed. When it comes to the chicks though i'm afraid the length IS important...Hooray for 35Mhz. ps when i've crashed one of beloved planes through a 35mhz problem i promise to return and eat a large slice of humble pie!       

Microsoft Flight Sim X. Bought it for my Dad at Xmas. Its simply awesome. He loves it. He like you just wanted to fly a good sim. He doesn't stop talking about how he's flown though the Alps or from Glasgow to Edinburgh etc etc. Get a joystick too...they're not that expensive.

Hi Tim, Its really sad what i've seen on the news but its not going to stop us emigrating over there as soon as our house is sold. The wife's a kiwi and half the family are there (Auckland+Tauranga) and i know its the life i want for us. The UK is finished as far as i'm concerned. It's gone to far. 65 million people all fighting and falling over each other for their small piece of what they think they deserve for free!!! No thanks. Can't wait to get there now...and yes the planes are coming too.

I was going to recover my warbird wing with an iron-on covering but depending on how you get on with it David i might go this route...my only concern is what happens when it comes to rework in the future? With an iron-on you can peel off and re apply.

Its better to walk 200yds to collect a model than 50 to collect the bits....ie don't rush your landing. Goes through my head every time i bring my un-flapped wabird in!!.

I've never had any problems on my 35meg system....oh thats rite it wasn't broke in the first place so no need to fix......sorry had to get that in there..

cheers cagey....i measured mine to be about what you had above so i went for it....flys great as you say...its hard to believe its just foam wizzing around at 90mph!!

CRRC 26cc Petrol Engines are available from Hong Kong/China via ebay etc for around £140 delivered. I love mine, started first time and its never missed a beat. You will always get differing opinions on this though. I went for the rear carb version so i didn't have any carby bits sticking out the cowl. Ordered it on a Friday afternoon and it was tracked by DHL with a number all the way to the UK on the Monday morning. It was delivered on the Tuesday after i paid the import tax....£6 i think it was. Very happy. Oh yeah sounds great too.

We've all heard it down the field at some stage or other...very funny.

My word JC isn't she a big girl!!I've got a Pulse 40 which i use full UP flaperons via a switch the second the wheels hit the floor....stops it getting airbourne again when you've no power on and sticks it to the grass nicely. Edited By Shuglu on 12/02/2011 16:00:55

I still have the full size plans and build instructions for my T180. I can arrange to copy another set of full size wing plans off and photo copy the rest if you like for the cost of the postage. As Richard said there were never any Plans for the fuselage.

26cc Petrol all the way for me..it'll pay for itself in 25ish gallons. I went the CRRC 26R route from Hong Kong delivered via ebay for around £135....its the best engine i've ever had glow or otherwise...AND NO OILY MESS!!
