Eric Hartley
Has anyone built the DB Auster Kit? I have built various kits - Flair,Top Flite etc. which have been ok. Does the finished product fly ok? I am looking for something fairly stable and not prone to tip stall.
Garbo
Eric are you talking about a new kit of an old one. the most recent DB kits are lazer cut making for more accurate easier to build models. Having not flown the Auster I won't comment on that but DB are renowned for great flying models
Terry Walters
Hi Eric - this one is on my build list too but a least a couple of years off! The quality of DB Sport and Scale kits is beyond doubt and in that respect you should have no worries. I did their 58" Tiger Moth and have a DH60 Moth in the loft as well. Eddie and June at DBS+S are very helpful if needed. Pete Lowe's article in this edition of RCME reveals that it is his next project so you will have an excellent 'buddy' to build with! I'm sure it will fly well. I flew the full size version for a while when I did my tail wheel conversion a few years ago now It was a bit like a time machine transporting you back to the '30's but a real lady. Noisy, doors flapping and everything rattling! The only vices were the predictable ones. Need to master swings on take off ( I managed several violent 'pilot induced oscillations'!) and adverse yaw on turns with rudder needed in turns - better applied before moving the stick over! Having said that remember that 1000's of student pilots got their PPL on Austers in the 50' and 60's and some are still being used for tuition so a lot of really enjoyable flights ahead Eric!. Go on you'll enjoy it and I shall watch with interest! Terry Edited By Terry Walters on 14/12/2012 08:57:
Danny Fenton
Hi Eric the Auster J1 kit is on my to-do list, there are a few build threads I could point you too, several on, this is one on detailing RCMF and another on RCAircraft Online which might be more what you are after. Cheers Danny
David Davis
There are quite a few full sized Austers at a grass airfield near Eggesford, Devon if you're looking for colour schemes.

Terry Walters
Eric - have you seen this build blog? And this flying video? Hope it helps! Terry (Just a bit jealous!)
Reno Racer
very nice plane and flying site. Not sue the foot stop of the prop spinner, although hav the same with my corsair (ASP 91FS), engine runs so good, but throttle cut and full down trim struggles to get it to stop sometimes, but it runs so sweat..... (sorry for hijacking the thread) rob.
BrianB
Hi Eric,I did a kit review for RCM&E on the DB Auster many years ago and it was a lovely model.Obviously this was the old kit and not the current laser cut one currently available but it was an enjoyable build and the end result was a lovely looking model which flew very well.I originally fitted a Laser 60 which had ample power but later changed to a Laser 70,either engine flew it with ease though if you are looking to aerobat it you may need a liitle more power. One thing I did find was that even though it`s quite a large model the radio bay was quite small, perhaps the modern 2.4 Rx`s will fit better!.Good luck with you build. ian ludwell
Hello everyone, Hello Jim,was at the Snowy Owl again towards the back end of last year, about the time that Annie came to open up the"Lady of the North" walking area behind the Snowy Owl. Stirred a few souls up. The reason for my visit? I am in the throws of building the DB scales J1 Auster. Beautiul kit with laser cut parts. There is a good link to a build forum on the DB scales Auster page. I am not sure which engine to fit,i fancy a four stroke. My colleague suggests a petrol engine. Have looked at the Just engines ASP or the SC inthe 0.70/0.90 range. Any thoughts gents? Regards ..Ian
Jimbo565
Ian Both myself and fellow forumite Brian B are only a couple of miles away from the Snowy Owl. Mine flew fine on OS48 surpass power and as i have said it floated for ever so I think flaps are a must. Regards Jim
