Are there any kits for “Classic” F3a style flying

Hi,

Is there a list of models available still, in kit form, that are suited to this style of flying?

I’m aware of the Gangster, and the ones from Cloud models, are there any others? I have O.S. 46SF and O.S. 55AX earmarked,

I’m looking to start back flying aerobatics to a schedule.

Any advice appreciated.

Depends what you mean by "classic", Stuart! To me, classic means pre-1970, but everyone has their own definition - depending on when they were born, I guess.

BelAir do a range of classic aerobatic models from the 60s. I made a KingPin (1963) a couple of years back. They also do the Taurus (THE classic aerobatic model!) as well as Chris Olsen's Upset. They also do the MoonGlow and Tempo as well as some other "intermediate" aerobats from that era.

The KingPin is obviously very "Taurus" influenced, but probably an easier build than an original Taurus. Many of these models were designed for a 49 or 61, but that was in the pre-Schnuerle port era, and a modern 45 will have comparable output to an "old", cross-flow, 61. It flies well, and of course is a lot lighter than the original as it doesn;t have to carry 2lbs worth of radio gear around!

Quite like the look of the Kwik Fly 3 too - still working out how to download the plans from Outerzone though (my IT skills are beyond poor) and as I have a 40 looking for a home the KF3 looks to be perfect. No doubt if I had the plans I could get a rib pack etc. without much trouble. Advice anyone?

What do you mean by 'kit'? Do you mean a traditional Built up model using wing ribs or foam cores or something ready assembled that just needs fitting out?

UKCAA classic era is pre 1996. There are many plans available for models from this period, but unless you can hunt down an MK kit then there isnt very much,

There is the PB Models (now Cloud I think) Bullet and Tornado and there are some cottage industry manufacturers in the USA who offer a number of classic kits as well:

I have often wondered whether there would be any benefit to the UKCAA CADing up a few popular designs - like the Loaded Dice and other UK designers models and providing short kits, in much the same way that I have done for the smaller Kwik Flis and the Mystic. These could then be ordered on demand with about a 4 week lead time.

Need to keep away from the Prettner range though as Hanno's model flying estate - including the rights to commercialisation - is currently up for sale.

Not really a kit, but -

Chilli Wind article & plan were listed on Outerzone recently; full size plan still available from Sarik. Ideal match for piped 46. Foam wing & tail used to be available, maybe one of the other UK suppliers could sort out a set. Fuselage is easy to build.

The SIG Kougar is another old design that flies very well that is still around
as a builder's kit.
Be wary of heavy, hard balsa in some SIG kits though.
As mentioned, the Bullet is a good choice.

A Kougar would be a great match with your OS 55AX, or a Bullet with your 46.

you could also look at the Kosmo3 or 4 from mantua models, it is very reasonably priced and available from a couple of UK stores. Beware though the instructions are only in Italian
