I've still got a PFM Firecracker.

I recently refurbished it and fitted it with electric retracts and a new engine but it could do with a new canopy as I managed to crack the original and the repairs look a bit rubbish!

It does fly well and I do feel that there could be a market for the kits. Good luck with the project and I hope you can find a buyer to take it on.

Hi Rich can you remind me of the span of the Firecracker please?

I had the Jungmann and liked it so much that I got the giant Zlin I wanted the Firecracker next but got side tracked into something else that is not that memorable and have regretted it ever since, so much so that I am getting as much info I can on the Firecracker to be able to make my own, I like the piston engined one but the Turboprop is gaining more interest, they were all great flyers I seem to remember, certainly the two I had were, the Firecracker was the one that got away!

The amazing thing about the “Giant Zlin”, 86” wing span, was that it was fully aerobatic on a bog standard 61 two stroke. I saw one being flown with a 40! The Webra Speed 91 Dynamix was perfect for it and I still have that engine, so it might finish up back where it began if I do resurrect the one I bent. The other NIB kit is likely to finish up with a 120 4S though, I don’t think I would inflict electric on it.

When I built the first one I originally fitted a geared Webra Speed 61 because I thought the big low speed prop you could use with the (I think) 2:1 gearing would be ideal for the plane. It was odd to fit because the output shaft was offset, so the engine was fitted to the bulkhead below and to one side of the thrust line. It worked fine but the problem was that the straight gears were so noisy it exceeded our Db limits even then, probably in 1990! I had bought it from Jim Davies Models and he agreed to swap the front end for that from a standard rear induction Speed 61 and I still have that engine too, hardly ever run. Converting the plane to the 91 was the right thing to do. I think I used a 14”x6” prop on it. I must get it flying again, or build the other one.

There seems to be a market for established designs that are known to fly well. Firms like Belair produce sets of cut parts rather than complete kits. It appears that builders go for well known names rather than unknown designs, so PFM might be atractive for that reason.   It would appear that the designers sell their plans direct to builder but not the parts.  Belair sell cut parts but not the plans in most instances.   Different to the traditional kit business in the past.

Just had a look at those. Either the pound has dropped through the floor, or the euro has skyrocketed, the conversion Euro / dollar prices look the wrong way around, maybe I'm just tired.surprise

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry for the delay in getting back - been out of the country for a couple of weeks and life also got in the way...

So, this is a last ditch attempt to do something with what is left.

I've tried a few places but no interest, which I kind of expected.

I had to move it from the storage location so its now sat in my house.

I have I believe a full set of manual templates for all the models. I have no of the other tooling for wing cutting, glass or vacuum form moulding.

I have for most, a couple of sets of all the foam parts that would need to be copied.

I have various part cut kits.

I have most of the vacuum formed stuff that you can take moulds from.

Likewise, I have I think cowls you could again make moulds from.

Plans wise I don't have a complete set - some were lost many years ago.

It needs a custodian by the end of next week - March 1st.

I do not have the time that it needs putting in to it.

I really do not want to consign it to history again but will if I have to....

Sorry, but I still have no private message from you via the forum on here.

I don't see how that quite constitutes being rude but there we go....

I will make attempts elsewhere....

I too sent you a private message, sometime back that remains unread

You should see a flashing envelope below your name box

It seems clear that this offer hasn't generated much interest and I don't want the thread degenerating into more disagreement. I see that a PM I sent to one of your accounts on 26/1 hasn't been read, either.

Perhaps you'll have more success elsewhere, Michael?

I'll lock this thread off now....

Pete

  • 5 years later...

I've just acquired a well used PFM Cranfield A1 c/w ASP 108 & custom silencer and elderly servos.

I gather there were two sizes available - the one I have and a 40-size??

The engine has cleaned up OK - it just needs a main needle valve "O" ring (on its way from Just Engines).

Also the custom silencer fouls on the Dubro soft mount..................which has at least one cracked clamping ring.

So, my thoughts here are to go to a conventional mount.

However the real problem is the fibreglass / plastic? - two piece (?) cowling.

It looks like there have been several engine installations & positions??

As a result, it has been butchered and damaged quite extensively.

I've been in touch with Phillip at Cloud models and now have a partially faded A4 size plan originally part of the PFM kit?

This shows a built up cowling arrangement.

Can anyone help with info, a decent drawing, or perhaps even a useable cowling?

Help please - many thanks in advance
