Hi ... yeah probably overthinking it no doubt.

Been a few years since I did any planking. Slowly getting my eye back in. Last time was on a 8oz vintage rubber FF model and a KeilKraft Jetex Mig15, I think. Probably teaching granny but a useful tip is to actually slightly crush the plank on the edge of the workbench every say 3/16". Puts a nice bend in it. 7.5Ib density. Been lucky as only needed a couple of small infills so far.

Keep calm and plank on!

Lol ... can't get the hang of this posting from an iPad!

Not your fault Mike - the software seems to produce duplicate posts every once in a while. I usually ask a moderator to remove the duplicate, but there are so many threads, they often don't notice the request. So Mr moderator could you please remove the duplicate post, thank you.

haha ... blame fat thumbs or something. using PC this time. Bit more progress. Only the bottom planking to go really as far as structure ... oh and engines I guess!

Need a bit more practice on fledgling 3D CAD skills. Tip tanks are a first pass.

Cheers

Hello

after been ‘back burnered’ for most of the year, finally finished planking etc.  Going to cover tail feather in tissue dope and glass the rest of it.  Will build engines and wing root after initial glassing.  Glad that planking is over ?

Hi

slowly slowly as it goes.  Finally got round to making a larger vac form box than the one i made last year for a smaller project.  And the frame.  Did an initial canopy pull just to get an idea of how it will go.  Results in pics.  Its a very ‘rough pass’ but enough to let me work out what to do next.

Adding a basic plastic sheet interior to the cockpit and will apply some ‘plastics modelling techniques’ to it.  Will buy a couple of pilots/ejection seat busts.  At least I’m adding weight at the right end.

Don’t ask why but i built the nacelles ‘off the wing’.  They should be easier to glass/sand that way.  They are a nice sliding fit so got away with it.  Will 3-D print intakes and some other bits.

This stuff was bang on ... and cheap.  Way better than messing with pop bottles.  5 minutes in the Aga (don’t tell the wife) and it was ‘sagging in the frame’ 4”.  Vac formed very nicely indeed.

The job goes on ... not sure what i do to fill the time but just seems to be faffing on.

3D printed engine exhaust a jet pipes.  Printer playing up so i scrapped the super detail Coffman starter cartridge exhaust duct and 4. X flow straighteners as was losing the will to live.  Canopy line needs a bit of work ro get right but nearly there.  Probably not worth overdoing it on a model that might not live that long.

Will mould a couple more canopies as these early ones are just test shots.

Will only tack glue canopy in place so i can finish cockpit in greater detail if it flies ok and survives my ham fisted landings.

Hi

doesn’t look like much progress but i feel like ive been chasing my tail on this canopy piece.  3M spot putty and Halfords high build primer are great but sure like dissolving foam through pin holes.  I knew that but thought i’d glassed the foam sills and blended them in enough.  Wiping on foam safe ca direct to the high build primer and sanding with 320 actually works really well.  Looks rougher than it is.

I should be able to complete all the paintwork on the outside without finishing the cockpit at this point.  The canopy is a sliding fit all round.  Still have some internals to do including getting hold of aircrew 😀

Will give the hole model a couple of coats of thinned P88 sprayed on, rubbed down lightly, then a coat of Halfords white primer from a rattle can.  Tamiya acrylics after that.

anyone got any tips on final finishing, as in panel lines and a clearcoat?

cheers

Hi

bit more progress.  Wing fairings added and fin.  Nacelles glued on.  Just need to add stabiliser, final sanding of spot putty and will be ready to prime for real.

A week off work so hopefully can get something done.

mike

PS.  The engine inlets and and exhaust look good but arent exactly to scale.  The nacelles are a smidge too long.  Thought about cutting them back and adding redesign components but then the wife slapped me with a wet fish 🤕

Hi

not quite as much done this week but ready to start the fun bit.

not really finished any scale RC models so will be interested to see  how close i can get it to the target pic below.

Primed in Halfords white and rubbed back with 1200grit.

Tamiya Acrylics will be sprayed on.  Bit sure how durable that will be but hey ho.

Hello

nice job on the SuperSabre.  Thanks for the heads up.  Hadn’t thought about that one. Will check CG with and without when finished.  The mounts are held on with nylon bolts and the bombs to the pylons with 3mmx3mm magnets.  The 3D prints of the pylons and bomb come out at 15g each so 60g (2oz) extra.

Shouldn’t affect the flight characteristics too much ?

I was thinking of making the bigger tip tanks from vac formed plastic but yet to work that one out.

Any opinions on how the tip tanks might or might not affect flying.  Could imagine quite a lot of airflow blanking across the wing if you get some yaw on?

cheers

That looks like a great set up for the ordnance.

As for the tip tanks, in my limited experience with flying PSS'ers with them (JP, Fouga, F104) I've always found the aircraft to feel much more "locked in" with them on.

I've found that printing tip tanks in "vase mode" produces a great, light alternative vac moulding ABS.
