Danny Fenton
Thanks John that's great information. My full size pinking scissors are as you say 5mm pitch. I got some lovely stuff from Gary Sibbert in the States, the company was Pink-it the difference being it was on a continuous roll. But unfortunately Gary called it a day. Manish Chandrayan
Danny, while Gary called it a day, the Pink-it line was acquired by another firm and is still available Here Pink-it was using Solartex to do the strips, not sure what the current material is Edited March 31, 2022 by Manish Chandrayan
Danny Fenton
That's very interesting thanks for that. The last batch I got from Gary was not Solartex, really don't know what it was. I will bear them in mind for future builds. The edges were the best I have seen. Cheers Danny
Danny Fenton
Had a good rummage on the web John and struggling to find your first aid tape, have you a link? Cheers Danny

Yes please. I could use some of that for my FW 190 control surfaces.

Andy J
You would think wing rib tape could be easily cut using a laser cutter as per the Mick Reeves product, but I was unable to find any suitable line drawing tools that produced a pinked shape output. Danny Fenton
I cannot believe that would be difficult, create a few in say ilustrator, then duplicate, then duplicate again?
Andy J
Certainly that would work Danny but would have preferred to find an appropriate drawing tool with that option. Did ask on the forum some months ago but got a zero response. Not even sure if my cheap low power set up would have the necessary resolution in step size. Certainly works fine cutting out large letters in solarfilm though.
Danny Fenton
Sorry if I had seen it I would have tried to help. Next time i fire up illustrator i will try something that should work. Cheers Danny
Manish Chandrayan
From what I have heard, the issue with laser cutting will be finding correct power setting that will not burn the edges and make them shrink and curl. That is in case cutting any material that shrinks with heat

I have searched for how manufacturers cut tape continuously to no avail. Cheers Danny
Danny Fenton
Okay a quick search and this tool is in ilustrator... Unfortunately my version is too old, but I can draw it on my other half's PC if you want to play with cutting. How long a line do you want and in what format? Cheers Danny
Andy J
1/4 scale at any length for me please. For cutting out letters I simply attach the solarfilm to a cork mat using a combination of double sided tape in the middle and masking tape on each of the sides sufficient to keep the work piece held in tension. Cutting speed and laser power was established by cutting out small squares on a test piece.
Danny Fenton
I guess the TPI and length aren't important for testing? What length can you handle? and is an illustrator file okay.? Better PM me your email.
Danny Fenton
Created this in illustrator, pitch is 1.25mm which should be 1/4 ish. Cheers Danny

Danny Fenton
Email sent with test file. Keep us updated on how it goes. I might try cutting some on my plotter/cutter. Cheers Danny
Andy J
Well I managed to import the file into Inkscape Danny but cant do anything with it in terms from breaking it apart to cut a single tape at a selected width. Will take a further look in Inkscape to see if it has a distort feature similar to illustrator.
John Minchell
Was wondering if pinked edge tapes could be cut on a vinyl cutter like a Silouette Cameo and how that could be done . IE. how to hold down the solartex or diacov whilst cutting it?

If you want just one line of zig zag for testing I can do that?

I have done it for logos, just never for pinking. And you need something much, much longer. So you need to make a bigger carrier sheet, maybe from card, plastic sheet would be better.
