I have also taken to using water based varnish on my foamies - helps the decals stick, and makes mud easier to wipe off. Some are matt, some are semi-gloss, some are gloss - you can see brush marks if you look closely but not from a few feet away. Possibly adds a slight element of 'ding-proofing'. Cheap as chips too!
