Summer 2022 is here - who's been flying?

Recommended Posts

Morning

Last night I test flew this Arrows Lockheed T-33 in glorious late evening light, no wind, warm sun.........lovely!?

This is the 1st time for me with a EDF & I have to say i'm impressed with its performance, 30% E/P set on the flight surfaces and it flew rock solid.

Used x3 overlander 2200mha 3S lipo's with flights lasting 4-5 mins, though i'm sure with a bit of wind you could knock a minute or two off.

Best

Mart

Skylarks going full volume today ?.

Six good flights on my 62" Stik. It is a combination of the bits I liked the look of from several different plans. It has always seemed nice but maybe not quite right. Got someone better to have a fly today - nothing wrong with the model. That gave me more confidence, and with a couple of tips on what to try I made quite a bit of progress in rolls ? ? ? .

Try a 4s 1500, rather nice!

Hi Ron

I'm new to electric, would the T-33 kit ESC take a 4 cell lipo? It does fly nice on 3 cell but could do with a bit more ummfff.

Just worried about burning something out?

Queuing in the pits, well it was only the WWXL that was flown due to a throttle linkage problem on the Mustang.

Meanwhile, Kev is the only only pilot on the field this morning.

And I have to say it was nice to hear the sound of I.C.
Both of us flying "proper engines". Before I get shot down in flames, I also fly electric. Just not today.

Shame Ron`s Stang had the throttle issue.

About ten of us at the field yesterday, lovely evening for flying and a good opportunity to fly my Flair Fokker DVII, shame these kits are no longer available as they do fly extremely well.

We had a smaller version powered by an old Laser at our fly-in which was held yesterday.

Good flights with my EFlite P-47D and Spitfire XIV on a gorgeous morning with light winds and blue cloudless skies. I had remaidens planned for my electrified Magnatilla, repaired Henschel Hs-129 and Dynam A-10.

First thing to go wrong was a nose over with the P-47D, which broke a prop blade and I have no spares of that particular prop. So, onto a maiden flight with the Magnatilla. She got off the ground just fine and fair pootled around the sky just like a Flair Scout should do, very sedate and definitely not overpowered, but everything well under control. In flight piccies to follow.

By now the wind was fairly brisk and across the field. but I thought I'd have another flight with the Magnatilla, given the Jug was grounded and the grass hadn't been cut yet for the A10. The Magnatilla was a bit awkward on take off, ground looped and that should have been my clue. Anyway, I repositioned the model and tried again and this time she got off okay directly into wind, with a gentle climb out. Trouble was that she didn't seem to want to turn and I was having to add loads of rudder to get any directional control. At times she seemed almost uncontrollable and lurched about the sky, but gradually I tamed the model I thought, given the sluggish nature of the roll response, that I might have incorrectly set the lowest rate on the ailerons, but she was such a handful that I couldn't take my thumbs off the sticks to check.

I must have completed at least ten circuits - other models were landing and being retrieved, so I stayed up. Eventually the field was clear and I brought the model in to land - the approach didn't look too bad, but five feet from the ground she dropped a wing, I countered with opposite rudder, but the wingtip dug in as the wheels touched and the model cartwheeled, destroying the tail end. ?

On getting the model back to the pits and taking off the wing to disconnect the battery the cause of the lack of control was obvious - schoolboy error and failure in prefights, I hadn't connected the aileron lead when I refitted the wing after the successful maiden flight. Forum language rules prevent me posting what I said next, but that was the end of my flying for the day. I should have heeded the warnings but I didn't check my ailerons before taking off. Unforgivable.

Had a brilliant day on Thursday.  The sun shone, the winds dropped and it was warm.

I am just hoping that that particular day wasn't the entirety of our summer.

It is June, and winter seems to be very reluctant to let go. . We are now back to grey skies, stiff winds and cancelled events.

Sigh.....

I had a much better day at the club field yesterday, sunny, warm, light winds and some D-Day anniversary warbird flying - particularly enjoyable was the loose formation flying and beating up the field in a Spitfire three ship gaggle. Great fun. IMG_0454.thumb.jpg.894321f1c406f30061ea64ed90d63bae.jpg

The it was the D-Day anniversary today, so loaded up the car with invasion-stripe clad aeroplanes and made an early start. The weather at dawn was magnificent, but a few hours later had clouded over and the trip over the hills was down to 20 yards visibility in places and cold.
Undeterred I got to the field and unloaded the themed fleet.

During the afternoon it got sunnier and warmer and conditions were good for flying. As the day went on I flew every one of these models at least once and had a great day, including a successful couple of flights with my CML Douglas C-47 Dakota. It flew quite nicely, but I had the impression that slowing her up too much she would love to drop a wing.

All in all another great day, with good company and good flying.  ?

I bought this Kyosho Spitfire with the front end badly damaged it was complete with SC 52 fs and retracts that did not work, I did hope to have it ready for D Day but only managed a first flight this evening it flew very well and now has the cowl fitted as I am happy with the engine settings. the retracts, one was ok the other took a long time to repair as someone had spilled a lot of superglue in it.

One of our chaps turned up with a decent camera at the field one day last week, and took these for me while I flew around with my Multiplex 330SC and Pushy Cat. Then 3 of us got together with our Phase 3 EF-16s.

Flew both of my Midget Racers this morning, both around 1/4 scale, the Red one is a Long Midget Mustang and the white one is an Airmark Cassutt, both from Cambrian Models kits, the Cassutt was built by me a couple of years ago whilst the MM was bought as an i.c airframe and converted to electric by me. Both on 6s lipo, it was probably the last flight by me on these as i am selling them off as airframes to make room for some builds that are nearing completion. I will put them in the classifieds section if anyone is interested in buying.
