Never mind the weather - who has been flying, then?

We had a 'bit of an Evening Do' last Friday which also saw the latest round of the Wacky Warbirds Carnage comp. About 20 members turned up for a beautiful evening, going into night, flying session which finished at about 10:30 pm.

BBQ in full swing, note the pinky tipped Thunderbob in the foreground.

Mark found yet another new local slope on the North Yorkshire Moors and it seemed rude not to try it last night, what with a fresh Westerly blowing straight up it 😉

Launching the 33lbs DG500 was a bit sketchy in the turbulent air on the slope edge, but the rest of the 80 minute flight was a hoot.  The wings made a fantastic shrieking noise as they sliced the rising air.

Alongside camera duties, Mark thoroughly blew the dust off his oldie mouldie, a 3m Zeus that’s been insulating his loft for many years. Back in its element, the Zeus raced  around the slope, exploring every corner of the evening sky. There was more regular shrieking, this time from a very excited Mark 🤪
We flew until sunset and went home grinning like kids 😃😃

Having bought an old Laser 50 in order to participate in next year's Coupe Des Barons with a British engine, I treated it to two Gavin Carter piston rings and a new pair of teflon pads. It really didn't need them as the engine appears to have done very little work, there are no carbon deposits on the piston or cylinder head. Having run it up on the test bench a couple of times, I decided to install it in my Big Guff vintage model, replacing the Laser 62 which was originally fitted. Externally these two engines seem to be identical.

The weather was gorgeous yesterday afternoon but I was the only flier at the field. I had two twenty minute flights with the engine operating at all speeds.  I'll fly again tomorrow. The engine should be well run-in after another couple of flights.

Well we had about an hour and a bit of summer this morning. First remotely flyable day for about a week though, so managed to get a few flights in, with my Mosquito and  Dooleybird, Mustang IVB plus some formation flights with  the Volantex wee fellas, before rain stopped play.

Couple of the wee Red Arrows Hawks were going well and showing off their high intensity nose lights.

Actually got out to the field to fly for the first time in 18 months ( amaiden of a new glider) and the wind was swirling all over the shop so had a chat to two other committee members and then came home.

Yesterday, all the weather forecasts I use predicted rain at times, starting late morning. As I was up early pottering, I shoved some stuff on charge 'just in case'. At about 9:00, all forecasts showed rain starting early afternoon, so bunged a few models in the car and made the long, 1mile trek to the field.

Steady breeze swinging around between our two main runways, blue skies/white clouds/grey clouds/thunderous black clouds overhead. Kev and I emptied our cars of models. And had a nice few hours....... just as we were leaving, a few rain drops fell - we'd been lucky as we could see heavy rain falling over the coast.

I took these models (little Arrows Hawk out of shot):

A morning or remaidens of one type or another...

The Wot4 replaced the one that got run over. Flew as nicely as they do, with the Evo engine sounding and performing better now it is on its side and has a full, and correct size silencer. Only had one flight as despite passing a full range check, I received 'low RSSI' warnings at quite close range..... I'll swap the receiver out.

The Double Trouble has had the OS46 replaced with an OS55 as they're a great price at MSL. It is possibly earmarked for another model. Started with a quick twirl, lsn set perfectly, hsn VERY rich. Did some running in on the ground and in the air. Lovely.

The Spacewalker had sounded odd last time out so I had removed the engine (Saito82) and adjusted the tappets. Now running like a sewing machine but noticed an oddity - throttle response, both up and down, razor sharp on the ground but revs decrease slower on closing the throttle in the air. Decided to bring a few props next time out to see if the 'windmilling' of them makes and difference. Second flight did not exhibit this behaviour, which I thought odd. On landing, I noticed I had not inserted the stopper into the fill line so the exhaust was not really providing pressure.....

Kev flew his newly repaired Seagull Chippy with DLE20. A lovely combination. Just needs to add a mix so he doesn't need to remember to switch the landing lights on and off.  He also flew his re-engined Decathlon, following the crank pin shearing incident. Flew in its normal puppy-dog way. But had a few engine/fuel issues.

Unsurprisingly, we were the only 2 fliers.

As I pulled up at home, the heavens opened and it bucketed it down, including rather large hailstones, with thunder and lightning.

Today looks generally more promising.....

Great day at the field today. I spent the morning helping my former trainee with some more advanced lessons and test-flying various models for a couple of new members. These were a Wot Trainer, Junior 60, Bixler and an Easy Pigeon - none of which types I'd flown before so new experiences for me. All went well apart from suffering a deadstick with the Wot Trainer. This surprised me with how long it would glide meaning I had to abort the crosswind landing on the short strip and haul it round onto the remaining half of the main runway.

I then had a couple of flights with the Laser FT200-powered RV-4 which I'm now finally getting comfortable with. Before the 2nd flight, 4 guys from a local camera club came onto the site to take some photos of the nearby Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station which is due to be decommissioned at the end of September (UK's last coal-fired power station). They joined me in the pilots box and were happily snapping away as I flew low passes down the runway with the power station in the background.

I thoroughly enjoyed this as it gave some purpose to the flight rather than just bumbling around and making it up as I go along. The landing was probably the best I've ever done with the model too! After the flight I passed on my email address and asked them to pick out a few shots and send them to me. Here's one I took on my phone:
