gillyg1
Coming along nicely Geoff, mind if i ask - which/ what silver paint are you using? Cheers Graham.
Geoff Gardiner
It was £2.50 from one of the pound stores - Poundland I think. Seems to have gone on OK.
Geoff Gardiner
Bit more showing the steps to paint the Queen Jean logo with a drop shadow added. A couple of areas need touching up but I am happy with it. More later...
Geoff Gardiner
I have done the wiring for the wing servos using a DB9 connector and fitted the retracts. More later...

leccyflyer
Lovely work in the office Geoff. There's a nice file for a P-51 )or P-47) gunsight available on Thingiverse, that you might find useful. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3916507 Ach - sorry, I'd posted after seeing the cockpit pictures, but before I saw that you'd fixed the canopy on. RICHARD WILLS
Well done Geoff . I'm really liking the look you are going for . I really miss my P51B even though I still fly the blue nose D version . They are almost different aircraft to look at because of all of the subtle differences . When you've finished I will no doubt be inspired to make another one ! Geoff Gardiner
Thanks chaps. So, I glued the canopy last night and must have been a bit tired because when I took the tape off today I noticed that it was slightly off centre. Once I had noticed it my eye was drawn to it. So it was out with the knife and the canopy was removed ( I did'nt take a picture because the air had gone blue! ) I am blaming Leccy for this decision as he pointed out that I had forgotton the gunsight 😉 (thanks for the link) Out with the 3d printer and a gunsight was duly fitted. Futura57
Ah! Gluing on the canopy. Something I mostly dread. Good luck and chocks away 😁
Geoff Gardiner
The first assembly: It's getting close. I still have the exhausts to fit and I am going to try a bit of weathering with this one. More later...
leccyflyer
Gorgeous 😎 IMO the P-51B looks so much nicer than the bubble canopied P-51D - the same goes for the Razorback P-47 and any Spitfire over the Mk 24 with the bubble canopy.
Geoff Gardiner
I have not had much time to do anything due to shool holidays and young children! I did manage a couple of hours today to play around with panel lines and some riveting. More later...
Geoff Gardiner
I have been playing about with some weathering and think that it is pretty much done, apart from fitting the ESC and some final fettling. gillyg1
Geoff Thats brilliant, you certainly did a good job with the weathering, you must be well pleased 👍 Have too ask - whats the jig you have for the rivets, did you make it ? Cheers Graham.
Geoff Gardiner
Graham, Yes it is something I designed in Fusion360 and 3d printed. Simple but very useful I think. RICHARD WILLS
Very nice Geoff . I didnt expect less to be honest, having seen your mossie build . I note , like me , you are using a plastic kit as reference on your PC screen . It baffles me why some of our static modelling cousins have never considered building a really detailed, non flying version of our kits . Just think how far you could go , if it didnt need to be a practical flyer ? I remember visiting Universal Studios , soon after Memphis Belle had been released . They showed us one of the 16ft B17 models on a perspex post , that had working props , rotating guns and flashing muzzles . It was being used on green screen but made a spectacular display model . Conversely, I have been to a large static model event at the Bovington Tank Museum and everyone there was getting all excited about a £500 24" span Lancaster that Hong Kong models had made . No contest!
Geoff Gardiner
A little bit more tweaking done and I think she is finished. I fitted the ESC and a voltage sensor. I also had to file the flats off the bottom of the prop adapter so that the prop would fit properly. Weigh-in Time According to Richard, he was coming in at 6.5lbs. Now I am not sure if this includes the battery and if it had the alloy spinner fitted? I have two batches of batteries that I aim to use - one heavier than the other. With the lighter batteries I have an AUW of....... 3344g or 7.4lbs With the heavier ones I have an AUW of........... 3392g or 7.5lbs The only extras that I added were some 3d printed detail in the office and exhausts, and I extended the battery tray to aid fitting the CofG without having to add any chunks of lead. Also, I am using 4000mah lipos and I believe Richard uses 3300's. I am hoping that 7.5lbs is not too porky! I suppose I had better go fly it.............
Paul Johnson 4
Mine is 7lb and handles it well, you'll be surprised, nice job.
Paul Johnson 4
Oh and Richard uses a plastic spinner the aluminium one is a lot heavier. Plus he uses a 3200mAh whereas I use a 4000mAh. You might also find the aluminium spinner backplate is prone to distortion even from a gentle nose over if you find a bump or hole. I eventually replaced it with a thicker one, more weight, but much better. Just make sure if you do nose over you check it. You definitely have done yourself proud with this one.
