Why Do I Do This? Start To Build Another Model Before The Current One Is Finished?

I’m in both camps, depending on the cycle of my mind, get on with it, or I really want one of they, and I want it now. But one thing strikes me, over the years, sometimes a build stalls, because what you like just alters.

I’ve got a Top Flite P 47, wood finished, glassing nearly finished, all servos etc have been fitted, fettled with control rods, ditto motor, ditto undercarriage and it needs painting and fuel proofing. No issues, nicely made.

No longer interested in flying or maintaining that sort of model. I’ve been staring at the fus, standing on its nose in a corner by the central heating boiler for 15 years.

Same same but with a TF Corsair.  I think it will be a flying brick using the kit wood etc so have largely lost interest.  Wife bought it for me from Alans Models in Whitley Bay 30 yrs ago when I first met her.  I knew she was a keeper at that point 😂

Its my longest running ‘forever project’

Hi Futura57,

That's a very nice looking red & white Kamco Kadet ...... I presume the photograph is after you worked on it rather than in the '15 years not used' state. Also nice to see it is the later 4-channel version with aileron wing. I flew a 3-channel version back in the late 70's & it is a design that I would like to revisit at some point.

I am aware that laser cut wing rib sets are available from skyhighrc, who list items on e-bay.

I recall there were also plans 10 - 15 years ago to reintroduce the kits, but this doesn't seem to have happened (yet?).

As for the thread topic - I'm also guilty of flitting from one project to another & have several part-built, or part-refurbished airframes in my workshop. It requires determined effort to stick to one project .... & I have always struggled with that.

It is reassuring to know that having multiple projects on the go seems to be par for the course. My attitude (excuse) is that it is a hobby so why struggle on with a project if you are not really enjoying it - and then another beckons? The other problem is that repairs or even home DIY take president, prompting ‘lack of progress’ malaise.

I have two built ready for covering projects (Peter Miller’s Alley Cat and Derek Woodwards Holly. Then there is my O/D PSS Blackburn Firebrand half painted.

They have been in this state for years, so near and yet so far!

Love the Junior 60 David, still a favourite of mine too. I've always had too many kits or projects around the little workshop. I do like building but take forever to finish even the most simple of models. Nothing better than being in the workshop on a windy wet day with a mug of tea and biscuits on the side!

After all you are what you are,  as another scribe has written "it's a hobby not a job". Just enjoy yourself😊

Very soon I will have my own aircraft hangar (triple garage space) with plenty of roof storage space, and a large partitioned workshop area where I can have multiple concurrent  builds/repairs/servicing. I can stop and start and flit between them until my heart's content. And my wife will finally be rid of all my modelling paraphernalia from the house.

Wow! You live in that!

I will once I get it all kitted out and resume all my paused projects 😁

The original plan was to have a single garage door for those larger models 😉 but I wanted good draught proofing. In the end I went for a bifold door.

I intended to say "you could live in that", impressive building!

My new hangar/workshop is now weather tight. Recent rain has meant some small adjustments to the guttering are necessary. The ceilings are boarded, plastered and painted and the lights are up and tested via an extension lead from the house.

Awaiting the electrian to come and connect both ends of the armoured cable to the four way unit and the house board and to certify everything. I'm also having two substaintial heating/air-conditioning units installed which each have inside and outside units. They have to be properly commissioned and gased up. One to cover the main downstairs area and another for the smaller workshop end of business where I can work more cosily in the winter months.

The upstairs storage area is all insulated and has the floor boarded.  There is a large hatch and fold down ladder for occasional access.

There is much building work to be completed in my front and back gardens: Driveway, patios, walls, steps, paths and general landscaping. I'm doing some things myself alongside the builders and fetching and carrying, all in a bid to shave a few grand off the huge outgoings. This means I won't get to start decking my hangar with benches, cupboards and shelves until later in the year. Basically, I've written off 2025 to deal with all the mess, stress and expense.

I haven't flown for weeks and my projects are backed up awaiting resumption. My wife is under the illusion she can share my new space! I think the bifold doors with integral privacy blinds have attracted her.

I probably should have used a different thread to post this. I just wanted to round things off here. I have no intention of posting (anywhere) a blow-by-blow account of fitting out and organising the space.

Onwards and upwards ✈️🛩🚁
