Richard Thornton 2
Question. Has anyone painted iron on covering on the inside prior to applying? Reason. I want to apply the skin to the fuselage pre-painted internally as I think it would give a much better finish.
Geoff S
If you mean to change the colour of the covering before applying it then you would need to experiment to see if the covering iron didn't affect the paint. I've a feeling that an iron hot enough to stick and shrink the covering will melt the paint - at least a bit.
Manish Chandrayan
Another issue would be to mark off the areas that do not need any paint as those will need sticking to the substrate. In my view it would be better to paint the interior (the visible parts) after the covering has been applied Edited June 26 by Manish Chandrayan
Manish Chandrayan
Richard, aren't you going in for the "OFF" label on the switch plate? Edited June 26 by Manish Chandrayan

No, the outer / upper surface is already painted in silver which as you say, is a devil to iron without scratching and melting the paint surface. It’s the other side that’s got the glue on. I am going to have to experiment.

In my view it would be better to paint the interior (the visible parts) after the covering has been applied I fully agree, masking off the area that needs to stick but as the cockpit area is quite ‘open’ I was thinking of spraying the visible area with green prior to covering. Again, reason for doing this is once the covering is on there is limited room for actually getting in and managing to paint the inside. How did you do yours? Can't help you on this one, I painted all my wooden structure before painting, then coveted with natural solartex then painted the outside. The only covering that can be seen from the inside is black and my build photos show this. I do not know what the prototype is like but my model being black is not an issue. What I have done at times in situations like this is with plastic handle paint brushes is to bend the handles (heat gun may help) to get an angle the the head, of for wooden ones cut them down then glue them back together at an angle. Thanks Peter, I was wondering how you did yours. I am also using Solartex which I bought about 15 years ago. It is painted silver on the outside as silver spray painting is horrid. I have, like you, painted all the inner wooden struts and frames green and was hoping that coating the ‘contact’ surfaces with ‘Cover Grip’ to aid the sticking process. My thought was, as it’s painted on the outside would it be possible to paint it on the underside, so I am going to get some offcuts and experiment. Richard Thornton 2
Well that’s todays project over and completed. There is a bit of a ‘touch of the cap’ to the aircraft’s origin 1946 to 1959 and to its current 1959 to present day.

Richard Thornton 2
Making use of the glorious weather we are having in the UK right now, undersides glassed and partly painted. 1 topside glassed with 1 added coat but oh so much more work still to do.
