TigerOC
East Devon Radio Control Club. Apparently the model (electric) caught fire in flight. Unknown cause and unlikely anyone will find out for sure because the model was destroyed in the fire. About 100 sq m of heathland was burnt. The landowner is supportive of actions taken by club members at the site.
Keith Billinge
I hope they don't lose their flying site. Sounds like if the landowner is being suppotive all will be well. Be careful with those lipos out their boys & girls; especially in these hot dry days of summer. (Both of them). KB
Cuban8
Cigarette ends, discarded bottles, BBQs, cars parked up with hot catalytic converters and a whole host of other sources of dry grassland catching fire are well known about and fairly common - but one model aircraft in a highly unusual incident and the good old beeb are on it like a shot. Got to be so careful to not allow this sort of negative publicity that makes a good panic headline to go crazy. Don't advertise these incidents and don't volunteer info to any media who just love to twist this sort of story. At least they didn't get their usual climate change stuff as part of the story. Andy Stephenson
Nothing that I have ever had anything to do with personally which has been reported in the media has been truely accurate. They always have to put a spin on the story to make it more sensational.

Fans of the brilliant series 'Detectorists' will recall the exchange between Lance and a local hack who was covering an important find made by the group. J D 8 - Moderator
As an old time Coastguard teaching new members to launch illumination/signal parachute flares could get interesting. Hand held these things would go with quite kick. The main thing was to ensure the person launching kept it away from the body and did not point it any where but up into the sky before arming it and depressing the trigger. Not all went the right way, one I recall went horizontal across the sea and landed on a small island occupied nesting sea birds who rose into the night sky screeching and squawking when it detonated on the ground ! On another training out on a headland the rocket flew across the bay and landed on the next headland starting a rather large scrub/gorse fire. Being remote this took some time to put out. As you may expect land owner was not a happy bunny and we were not allowed to train there again.
Rich Griff
Yacht broke moorings in a gale. Was boarded by a very brave person, alone, found flares, set one off which bounced around rigging and landed in cockpit to only bounce once more inside cabin causing fire. Yacht seen beached following mornings burnt out right down to waterline. Chap escaped inferno. RIP John. A very brave and respected man. Be very carefull out there chaps.
