Phil Beard
Mostly finished the elevator control mechanism and linkage from the mechanism to the servo. Whipping at either end not my best, but will do ok. I've used M3 rods and M3 quick links over the usual M2 items due to the increased loads that these parts will see. Next it will be the rudder linkages that will be fitted. Amazing the amount of time these footery little items take to do.
Phil Beard
Starting to finalise the route for the rudder bowden cables now the fin is temporarily installed and the elevator control rod is finalised.
Phil Beard
Guys just to confirm with yourselves that this build blog is still continuing and hasn’t been updated since I’ve been away on holiday to Malta for the last 10 days till Thursday. Unfortunately first thing Friday I tested positive for Covid. Hopefully build will start to progress again in a day or so.

Most likely on the public bus system which was usually shoulder to shoulder.
Phil Beard
Back to the balsa bashing tonight after going to Malta for 10 days and then being laid flat on my return with Covid for the next 13 days. Just sanded the fin to final shape tonight. PSS friends have guided me tonight on the closed loop system that I'll be using for the rudder control.
Phil Beard
Started work on the rudder and its control mechanism today which will be out of view inside the fuselage. I've inserted a rod into the rudder which will then pass through the elevator control horn and have it's own control lever at the bottom. Have also made the hole for the mylar hinges both in the rudder and rudder control and glued into place in the rudder for now and these will be then be pinned. Hole made through rudder base and brass tube inserted for rudder control mechanism to pass through. Finally rudder control has been covered with glass cloth. Good to be back building the Sabre after being laid low by Covid.
Phil Beard
As can be seen in the 1st photo the mylar hinges have now been pinned also and the rudder itself has been covered in glass cloth. The final 2 photos show now the hole that I've drilled through the elevator control horn through which the rudder control mechanism will pass. Doing this keeps all the controls hidden within the fuselage.
Phil Beard
I'm looking forward to flying this 1/6th scale Sabre with the guys from the Power Scale Soaring Association on the Great Orme in 2025.
Phil Beard
Been extending the lines on the drawing for the ribs, front spar, rear spar and main spar. So that these can be drawn onto the balsa lower skins of the wing as these skins will be placed into the jig that I initially put together. Phil Beard
Starting to build the upper and lower wing skins by initially sellotaping the 2 sides together and then putting glue down the gap on the other side and laying flat. In order to keep the joint flat and get the best result I've laid a heavy 1 metre metal ruler along the joint then added heavy sockets on top. Both upper and lower skins will be made up of 4-off 4 inch sheets bonded together. Luckily the final part can be made from 36 inch long 4 inch sheet instead of the 48 inch sheets as shown.
Phil Beard
Port lower wing skin put over plan and marked up for rib, front and rear spar and main spar positions. Taken longer than predicted as still awaiting replacement 48 inch long balsa 4 inch sheets which were supplied with edges which were straight.

I'm just awaiting replacement 48 inch long balsa 4 inch sheets which were supplied with edges which were not straight. I do really enjoy the building and with being retired plus the sailing season being over, I've got ample time to build.
Phil Beard
Started stripping down upper and lower wing spares from 6.4mm spruce and then gluing them to the wing bottom skin. Still waiting for replacement 48 inch balsa sheets to finish other skins. Courier is at fault now. Just want the balsa sheets to progress.
Phil Beard
Wing build has started today with the port wing being laid over the jig as can be seen in the photos. Initial 3 ribs have been glued into place making sure they're at 90 degrees to the skin.
Phil Beard
Wing has progressed today with the majority of the ribs now glued to the port bottom wing skin. Hopefully will get the other ribs glued in place tomorrow, together with the spruce upper main wing spar and some of the balsa shear panels between the ribs and upper and lower spars.

Martin, I've not been over to Steve's yet as no real reason for traveling over to Edinburgh way, but was in communication with him yesterday and was saying I may pop over shortly. As well as the canopy plug, he's got and A4 and a Tornado for me also. May look at the tides and weather for next week and walk over to Cramond Island as another excuse to pop over to pick things up. Also look at your CAD file for Rib 1 as I had to cut 1/4inch off the front so that it would fit.
Martin Gay
R1 adjusted on the wing plan and the cut files, at least it was too long and not too short! Many thanks. Edited November 6 by Martin Gay

Martin, You're right about it better being too long.
Phil Beard
With all the ribs in position it was time to install the spruce upper main spar and then start adding the aft balsa shear webs between the ribs and the upper and lower wing main spars. Only the aft shear webs added today as they take more time than expected to get a nice fit. Forward shear webs will be added tomorrow. Phil Beard
Spent all day today finishing the balsa shear webs between the ribs and upper and lower spruce main spars. Will cut and install the hard balsa forward and rear spars.
Martin Gay
If you are adding drop tanks, now is the time to consider the linkages. The twin riblets are where the drop tanks would be fitted.
