MarkVP
Hi all, I'm looking for a heli recommend... After well over a decade I recently got back into RC after dragging an almost forgotten glider out of my loft and electrifying it. Its been great fun and I've been amazed by how electric power has moved on. Anyway nearly 20 years ago I used to fly a Nexus IC helicopter and also had one of the first generation of small, fixed pitch electric helis (I forget what it was called). I'd like to get an electric helicopter but the choice is bewildering so I'd rather go on the recommendation of knowledgeable people here (as I did with electrifying the glider I mentioned above and that worked out great). Can anyone recommend me something based on the following: Electric heli. Budget sub £500 (happy with new or second hand) My transmitter is a Spectrum DX8. Easy to fly (I'm not a complete novice as above but will need something forgiving at first. Going forward I'm just interested in gently cruising around) Easy to set up. Really appreciate anyone taking the time to steer me in the right direction. Thanks in advance!
Colin Carpenter
Electric or ic ? Big or small. Can’t go wrong with Trex 500 Dominator. Love mine. Recently bought Goosky S1 for indoor use. Needs DSMX mini satellite! Excellent in our small hall. Blade 150s which flies well outside In little wind. Got 296 flights on it with no failures apart from tail rotor touches. Allan Bennett
A second vote for TRex 500. Very good assembly instructions if you get the kit, and good spares support in UK. Big enough to cope with reasonably windy weather. If that's too much for you price-wise and/or size-wise, I'm very impressed with various Blade helis I see some of our club members flying. Even the small ones have so much built-in stabilisation that they seem to cope well with moderate breeze.
GrumpyGnome
Blade 150 is great, lots of electronic trickery to keep it stable, but..... Blade 230 is even better as a returnee. Can be super-stable, or not! And well within your budget. Check the HH website to see if your DX8 is compatable with its clever electronics.
Jake Bullit
I've recently started with helis mainly for winter indoors I don't do 3d, but these two models I bought are capable of both. The first one was an XK110S which is light and more toy like but flies well and is cheap to get parts. The second one is a Goosky S1 which is full brush less and more premium product though it doesn't fly as long as the XK. Goosky are a good brand and you can go up the range depending on what size your after.
GrumpyGnome
I have an XK110 - great indoors but pretty pants outside 🙂
Steve Colman
I will add my vote to GrumpyGnome's suggestion of the Blade 230.
David P Williams
Hi Mark, if you fancy a Blade 230 I have one for sale. Boxed, hardly used with two batteries and the DXe tx (not used as I bound it to my DX9). PM me if interested.
MarkVP
Thanks so much for the advice everyone. I prefer the idea of a larger heli so I'm going to look for a second hand Trex 500.. might have to stretch my budget a little. Does anyone have any experience with the Trex 450? Bit smaller obviously but there appears to be quite a few around on the second hand market and they are much cheaper than the 500? Cheers! David P Williams
The 500 is a good choice. I find 450 size too lively for me, and too small for my aging eyesight, but the 500 is a good compromise and avoids the jump to 12S for the 600 and up
Colin Carpenter
Don’t forget you will need an FBL controller. Secondhand don’t normally come with them as they go for silly money on EBay. I find AR 7200x from SPEKTRUM to be reliable and are fitted to my 3 Aligns .Colin
GrumpyGnome
There seem to be lots of 450 variants, and many with 'improvements', or parts from third parties, so if buying second-hand, caveat emptor certainly applies..... the only one I've flown was very wick, even dialled down. No idea about 500s.
Allan Bennett
Align also do a 470, which is somewhere between 450 and 500. One of my club mates reckons it's much more stable than the 450. It can be had new for just over £500, only needing a receiver and flight batteries.
