Spins

Recommended Posts

At home recuperating from an operation, I was going through a load of old videos (I'm that bored...) and came across a few nice spins. Nobody ever does any spins and I think they're a really pretty manoeuvre with lots of variations to play with. It's a long time since I flew with a camera attached (I used to use it to check if my wings were level) so it may take a while to add to these, but if anyone has any decent spin videos please feel free to add them here.

@John Lee will recognise this canopy 😃

I also do spins! Virtually every flight, also no video, sorry.

I also had to do spins in a full size each time I renewed my Instructors Rating (I've also done them gliding & in basic aerobatic training).

On one renewal, 20 odd years ago, in a Cessna Aerobat I 'pattered' the spin in my usual manner "...close the throttle, ailerons neutral, full opposite rudder, pause, progressively forward with the elevator, neutralise the rudder & pull out of the resultant dive...". My examiner (Pete Godwin, author of the 'Air Pilots Manuals' used by most PPL's for their ground studies) asked if I had seen what happens if you open the throttle in the spin in that aircraft. I had not, so he demonstrated it whereby the nose rose & the spin flattened, rather as I expected with my model experience. Closing the throttle the nose dropped & we recovered as normal.

That's interesting I said, can I have a go? So I did and it occurred to me whilst comfortably chatting away during the following spins that I was finally starting to crack this flying lark, being able to fly, observe, analyse, and talk sensibly all whilst spinning down through a hole in the clouds over a Junction on the M1.

Spins are my favourite! Although, when practicing for my B a few years ago, I got a little overexcited with my first perfectly flat entry and held the spin for 5 turns instead of three.

In my defence, if I'd have had a 10" prop and retracts I'd have gotten away with it, as it was, I should have stopped at 4 to avoid a long walk with a bin bag and a lengthy rebuild.

Also, they're my favourite "negative G" test for bottom end engine tuning. Plenty of time at idle😂

Another spinner here!

My favourite trick is to do inverted spins with a Ripmax Trainer. Upright spins are impossible with this model (it just spirals) but the cambered wing stalls easily with negative 'g' so if you max out the control throws it will effortlessly perform a negative flick which you can then transition into a spin as the speed bleeds off.
