Cuban8
Has anyone had experience of the battery powered heated underjackets that can be bought for not very much on Amazon and Ebay etc. Any good?
Glenn Philbrick
I have a battery heated gillet that I wear under a boiler suit in the coldest days. I doesn't get hot but just keeps the chill off on the lower setting and will last most of the day. The most difficulty is keeping fingers warm and mobil.

You can get battery heated fingerless mitts also on eBay which help a lot. Even though your fingers are bare, the fact that the rest of your hand is warm helps a lot. Also a warm body means the blood flow to your extremities is maintained and helps to offset the chill. I used to ride motorcycles all through the year (a sidecar in the winter, mostly) and keeping warm was difficult - now? I really suffer from the cold. (best advice is not to get old 🙂 )
FiddleSticks
No but one of the managers at my company used to have one and he loved it.
Cuban8
Thanks for the replies, a few reviews on YouTube that also seem positive so I think I'll give one a try. I do tend to feel the cold much more since taking beta blockers for the old ticker, so a heated under jacket will come in handy not just for the flying field but also just outside generally and spending time in my unheated garage. We have quite good shelters on our field and the cars are close by so plenty of opportunity to stop getting too cold. I'm not keen on wearing lots of layers so seems a good idea. Brian Cooper
Yes. . The heated gilet jackets work well. For best results wear it over a T-shirt before adding extra layers (jumpers) over it. . They only need to be on for ten minutes or so. This preserves the battery, and the cosy warmth lasts for ages. Heated insoles in footwear is also useful during the colder months. There's heated everything now - socks, base layers, gloves, Balaclavas.
