Ernie
Hi, all, I've got a pair of 1/4 scale WW1 wheels. What can I use as tyres? I've tried small diameter rubber pipe, but it weighs a ton... It needs to be around 10/12 mm diameter ernie
J D 8 - Moderator
Large industrial O rings are available, try Polymax UK. Do not worry to much about the weight for WW1 aircraft. the UC is ahead of the CG where it will be useful and like likely save some lead from the nose. Also large wing area will lift plenty. Frank Day
They can be 3D printed in that "squashy" foam stuff, I think thats the technical term! Guy at my club had some done as he needed quite a narrow tread tyres on a warbird. Guy on ebay puppies123 prints just about anything if you supply him some measurements but dont mess him about. mightypeesh
I used 12mm neoprene cord on my Flair Nieuport. Much lighter than rubber! I guess it will be less resilient in the long run, but no problems so far. It comes in as black, I've just painted it grey with model acrylics. 🙂 Cheers
mightypeesh
I knew I had a pic somewhere of the wheels and neoprene before paint! Cheers, Simon

mightypeesh
Thanks Ernie, I was pleased how the LeRhone turned out 🙂. Good luck with your wheels! Cheers, Simon

Cheers, Simon I also make my own wheels and use neoprene for the tyres. I tried a few adhesives, but only superglue seem to work with neoprene, and I confess that I never thought of painting it. Can you tell me what paint you use, and will it stand up to hard use?
mightypeesh
Hi Michael. I used one of the Tamiya model acrylics - the ones that come in the small 10ml jars. Not sure how well it will wear with time, but feels quite resilient and has been fine so far 👍🙂. I think the glue I used was Evostick Contact Adhesive, once again no problems so far. Michael Barclay
Thanks, Simon. I will try it on a current build in progress. Mike.
