WOW.... that would be a trip down Memory Lane.

I was happily flying reeds when I was 11. . . That was 60 years ago.

I still  (occasionally) fly my 2.4Ghz single channel outfit. . . It totally confuses anyone who never experienced it for real in the 1960s.  😅

I've still got my 35MHz single-channel in semi-regular use! And my Grundig reed set on 2.4 GHz!

😁

If you remember Brian you flew my reeds J60 at the Winterton RCMF fly-in, June 2011? 😃  You had your big Spitfire.

I have a photo somewhere if I can find it...  😉

I still use 35MHz (actually 36MHz here in Oz) and as long as one remembers to extend the antenna on the Tx it works fine with my JR 3810.

I have been using a Uniden Bearcat UBC3000XLT scanner for almost thirty years and apart from rebuilding the battery pack it's revealing that its a very quiet band nowadays, much, much quieter than 2.4GHz.

I must be a Luddite as I still have my original Christy Mixer (V-Tail) which I assume that you are the inventor of 🙃 Christy Mixer.

Can you tell us when this was first invented and published?

Couldn't resist, built one of Phil's nRf reed sets yesterday. Pleased how it's come out.

More featured than the original PIC based one from many years ago I built in a RCS reed set case and it's still performing perfectly. The single channel button saved me building an additional tx

Yes, 'twas me - although the original concept was Mick Wilshere's. He wanted a "black box" to replace the old mechanical mixers - no computer radios back then! I designed the "black box".

It was originally published in the American RC Modeler magazine in July 1976. A couple of years later, we did a revised version, with some new (analogue) ICs that weren't available when the original was designed. The final version was a single deck design (the first two were twin deck, to fit in Mick's standard receiver case), and although the components had changed, the basic design remained the same.

Fast forward ten years or so, and PIC processors became a thing, allowing the whole thing to be done digitally, smaller and cheaper, but I left that to others. By then transmitters were starting to appear with mixing and servo reversing built-in, so there was little point in further development.

Ace, in the USA, produced kits and ready made versions, and the royalties from that made my hobby self-financing for a few years, which was nice! 😄 I never made a fortune out of it, though. A model shop owning friend once told me that the only way to make a small fortune in the model business was to start with a large one!

Petes crispy mixture was a revelation at the time.  Today we take mixers for granted, but in its day it was quite unique:

Hello, Phil (if I might be so familiar?), I have built and successfully flown your single channel project and fancy trying reeds. I have accumulated the buzzer and transistors, switches and case, the pot, the DIY MORE board and the NRF24L01 tx. The regulator is on its way. A couple of questions, if I may. What receiver does the NRF work with, do I need to "programme" the DIY MORE (I seem to remember having to download something and connect to the Arduino with the S/C project) and do I need an emulator (supplied by yourself)?

I think one of the joys of this hobby is the endless variation, from an RTF foamy to a vintage S/C model with a home made radio, haven't got round to a proper turbine though (yet!). How could anyone ever get bored.

TIA,

David

Thanks for that link, Phil! Although I still have my original copy of RCM somewhere, its got a bit tatty in the last - er, 48 years! 🤭 Nice to have a pristine version on file!

Oh, and I stress that although I designed the circuitry, it was Mick Wilshere's idea. Also Peter Valentine (of Lark helicopter fame) had a hand in it, as he was the one who managed to shrink the circuit boards down to fit Mick's plastic cases!

Hi David, answers inline as its easier that way 😉

>>Hello, Phil (if I might be so familiar?)

of course! 😀

>>I have built and successfully flown your single channel project

Excellent, thank you David! Which one, the FHSS one using the NRF24, or the original PPM S/C encoder?

>>What receiver does the NRF work with

The NRF based homebrew receiver from the FHSS project David, same as the S/C, propo & 1+1 variants,

details in the first post of this thread: https://mode-zero.uk/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=971 . It can be as simple as an RF Nano.

>>do I need to "programme" the DIY MORE

yes, from the files on the mode-zero thread: https://mode-zero.uk/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=1909 using a USBASP programmer

>>do I need an emulator (supplied by yourself)?

no, its self-contained.

>>I think one of the joys of this hobby is the endless variation, from an RTF foamy to a vintage S/C model with a home made radio

so very true 😀

If you're not already a member David I'd suggest joining mode-zero where you'll be made most welcome and where all these projects and more are documented:   https://mode-zero.uk/

I havent had time to do a specific 'FHSS Reeduino' video but the features and facilities are exactly like the old Reeduino seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLP-w-6PEqQ

Cheers

Phil

Phil, thanks for that. Is there any reason I can’t use a Spektrum Tx module? I’ll follow your links tomorrow. Don’t be surprised if I come back with another question!!

If you want to use any of the commercial PPM modules you need the Reeduino project David, items P18 and P19 on the Archive page of http://www.singlechannel.co.uk

Scores of these have been built over the last 7 years using a variety of PPM modules - Frsky, Orange, FASST, Lemon, Flysky, Hitec, Multis, etc.

( If your browser doesnt allow http then use https://www.mccrash-racing.co.uk/sc )

It uses the DIY-More board so you're halfway there already! 😀

The specific Reeduino iteration in this thread uses my own homebrew FHSS system instead of a commercial RF module so the way it generates the signal is completely different, there is no PPM and its entirely digital end to end.

Cheers

Phil
