I have just recieved a 1/4 scale pilot from Real model pilots for my never ending Fokker E111 build.  What a fine wee german he is. He needs painting, but  he's a wee beauty.

BUT before the postie mademoiselle (I'm in France) would even let me touch it she demanded 30 euros..mon dieu..I could could have a big fat christmas goose for that sum

Whats going on? and most important. who gets my money?

That would most likely be import taxes and duty fees, collected by the french postal service, on behalf of the french treasurer.

We're not allowed to talk about the reason why duty fees and import taxes now apply between the UK and France. But we definitely "won".

It works the same going the other way as well - cost of goods and postage paid to source abroad, then VAT plus collection fee added on at final delivery in UK.

I have bought items from MotionRC EU and paid at point of purchase and no more (if items are below the limit), they just get delivered as with everything else.

Surprised a unpainted pilot was that expensive or perhaps the French have a different rule for importing.

Yes, I have too. If you buy from a larger dealer/manufacturer they can be UK registered for VAT and collect the VAT for our government.

BUT for smaller cottage industry types that is not cost effective, so you buy VAT free and pay on delivery in UK.

My experience of getting parts shipped to France when I am there is that the Courier / La Poste stick a €25 processing fee and then add TVA on top. Puts a different complexion on shipping things. It used to be £10 shipping up to 20Kg and that was it. Insert Political comment here....... or probably best to just think it.

Almost certainly TVA and an admin charge Ernie.  How much was the pilot and the shipping?  A combined cost of around €125 would solicit a TVA bill of around €25 plus a €5 admin fee.

Whenever I buy stuff from the UK I get an email from LaPoste that the parcel has arrived at the customs and a day or so after that I get another email inviting me to visit LaPoste's duanes site to pay the TVA unless it has already been paid by the seller, usually with a 50odd% discount if I pay on-line, otherwise I have to pay the postie in person. I guess I had to register with an account at LaPoste.fr but it is well worth it.

I've never seen an admin charge from LaPoste over €5

My last bill was 17€ administration and postal fees from the post, I paid online, as if you don't, it's even more, the rest is the french Tva, purchase tax,,

 30€ + for a 10€ piston ring from England !.

Get one 3d printed next time, a club member scanned me so he prints me whatever size I want,,

 1/5th scale printed then painted,,,

I won't scare you off by showing the real thing.🤣

Don't knock la  Belle France...As I speak, its mild and calm. There are half a dozen busy flying sites nearby, also a secluded one run by a couple of storks, the Feislers.

I'll probably sit on the terrace outside my local cafe, and enjoy a real cup of coffee. There are local oysters for lunch, and a ginormous selection of local cheeses.

The wines are of course excellent and very reasonable. As Napoleon once said, 'give me a squadron of wot4s, and I'll rule the world'

Recently ago I purchased a model engine from the U.K. (I am in Australia)

My bank charged me a fee for International Bank transfer (just a few keystrokes), I paid for that.

An email from the vendor revealed that I had not paid enough.

Further investigation revealed that his bank (Barclay's Bank) had also added an additional international transfer charge to the one I had already paid and deducted this from my payment.

It's not quite Royal Mail but it is  an example of how one can be squeezed by corporate villains

Still using a traditional bank then?   I can recommend Wise for anybody sending money overseas or paying for goods from another country. I wouldn't dump my entire income in their account as they are NOT a bank and thus not regulated the same as a bank, they are regulated, just not the same as a bank. Here is a referral link  https://wise.com/invite/dic/michaell1925 if you fancy taking a look. (No other financial links..... just a happy customer)
