Andy Stephenson
I am reconditioning an almost complete Wot4 built some decades ago that was left to me, but I'm trying to work out just how old it is. The price on the box says £46 so it must have been some time in the 80s. Can anyone speculate when the kit might have been purchased. John Lee
Is it the deluxe version with the GRP cowl & undercarriage or not? There was a big difference in the price of the kits. EG from 1986:
Andy Stephenson
This one has a nasty ABS cowl, if that helps.
John Lee
I'd guess it's about 1990 then. Impossible to be more precise as the price will have varied by a few £££'s between different outlets.

Nigel Dell
About 1983 for mine, and I think I was a little late to the party then, I am guessing it was a plan/plan pack earlier than that before it was a full blown kit.
Andy Stephenson
It was built before the Solartex covering became fuel-proof sometime in the 80s/90s as it has a layer of Tufcote on it.
John Lee
Solartex has always been fuelproof but it was quite common to treat it further to stop it becoming scruffy.
Andy Stephenson
There was talk in the clubs in the 80s that Solartex had changed and now no longer needed fuel-proofing. To me, that meant that before this, it did.
Nigel Dell
Probably glosstex became available, solartex was always fuel proof but as John says it was given a coat of something to stop it becoming scruffy and easier to clean, my Wot 4 was covered in solartex then sprayed with a coat of tufcote, still got the airframe 😳🤭😂
John Lee
I'm with Nigel. I built a Magnatilla in 1983 - I can date it as it was my first build after moving house - and covered it in Solartex which had just come out. I never fuel proofed it as it said it was not needed and it flew for many years, in fact it got through 2 engines, without any problems. GlossTex was introduced a few years later and has a quite different & distinctive appearance. My last kit built Wot4 (I've built 4 over the decades) is covered in GlossTex and is now about 30 years old, albeit I retired it 12 years ago when I went all electric.
