It transmits a twin signal for ultra security of control, they claim a range up to 10s of km.

I suspect that under the UK spec, assuming it has a CE label, its range will be limited because we are not allowed to have more than 10 mW transmitter output power.  I think in the USA you can have 100 mW of power but that is illegal in the UK.

You are finding that the weather forecast is far from being something on which you can rely for more than one day ahead and, in some cases, only on the day!  This is not to do the weather forecasters down but merely a reflection of the highly complex nature of our weather which continues to defy the best efforts of man to forecast it accurately.

I was told by a visiting BT engineer , after I commented about no power no phone, there is a phone available from BT, battery driven , that BT are in a position to supply . However BT have  refused supply one to me. I assume that this is on a cost basis. I dont know what sort of appliance it is. It could be some kind of mobile !!!. I am in an area where power outage happens, due to overloads on overhead supplies. The electric company have me on a list, I am contacted when downtime is known in advance.

  4. That's how people designed aeroplanes before the advent of the science of aerodynamics, wind tunnel testing and, now, computational fluid dynamics or CFD.  Unfortunately, you need a very powerful computer to run the CFD software as well as a highly trained aerodynamicist to set up and drive the software as well as to create the airframe in a 3D web.  It's amazing what this can do for aircraft design but it's far too expensive for use on model aeroplanes - unless we can persuade a friendly prof to get one of his students to take on the task of designing the perfect aircraft for.......er - rubber power, slope soaring, thermal soaring, aerobatics etc.  One of these days may be!  Till  then SWAG and TLAR rule.

More concerning may be how (what I assume are) mains powered broadband distribution cabinets will be affected by widespread power cuts - hopefully there has been some consideration given to maintaining connectivity!

That's precisely my point Martin.  There are a number of weak links in this chain.  Have they covered them?

HI Peter, with the new phones, no power no phone. No Internet no phone. Youll all have one soon, thats if you have a LL.

Thanks Bas.  I just want to know which genius approved this!  At least when you lost your electricity your phone line still worked provided you had an genuine phone plugged into one outlet and not a smart phone.  Let's hope that the mobile mast that I would need to use in an emergency will have its own UPS to give it redundancy.

Anyone know if mobile phone masts have a UPS fitted?

  8. I understand not wanting to pay for a membership card when it is free.  But the Vectis card gets you 4-5 % off your supermarket shop.  I have saved at least £130 / year for an outlay of £4 -£5 to buy the card.  You can get discounts from a very wide range of providers - I just don't need many of the goods e.g. a few items from Halfords apart from groceries.

  9. Thanks for pointing that out PDB.  I never knew that!  Interesting that if I hover the mouse icon over the green icon, all it says is Senior.  I thought it might say Download to digital wallet or something similar.   However, as I don't have a digital wallet on my phone, I'll stick with my Vectis Card!

I think the card to which you may be referring in your OP is the Vectis Card.  This costs around a fiver and provides you with discounts from a huge range of suppliers.  It also provides a BMFA card in a plastic form like a credit card.  You don't need that but by golly it paid for itself in my first 2 supermarket shops as you get between 4% and 5% discount.

England game drove me crazy, ref fussed over the scrum so much he killed much of the game.

Yellow for Cheshum, his body and arms were good in the tackle, TMO said so, player came down to him, Yellow card ? Well there's head contact ? Later in the game Cheshums off for an HIA, think an elbow caught his head, no intent, no bad tackle, no card ?

Not all refs are Wayne Barnes - sadly.  He will be greatly missed.  Shame on those who drove him out of refereeing.

  12. After the low cloud lifted, we had a low wind day,  albeit a 90 deg cross wind, with some blue patches.  Ideal for some more trimming.  Today, it was revisiting motor side thrust.  To make sure I had wings level I flew directly towards myself and pulled to the vertical and on three occasions the Anthem pulled to the right.  Landed and added a bit of left side thrust.  A second flight showed a tad more was needed so a tad more added.  Only had time to fly one schedule and the revised trim seemed to help.

Hi peps, does anyone know what aerofil the Wots wot uses?

I'm intrigued as to why you want to know this information.  Are you intending to build a new wing with a different aerofoil section?

Thanks, I've just done that; I'm covered till July. Perhaps that is why they didn't send me a reminder. It's a shame it isn't co-ordinated with the BMFA membership. I wonder why BMFA insurance isn't automatically renewed like other insurances; normally you get renewed unless you actively opt out.

I don't know what world you live in Arthur, but if you pay your money to the CAA why should they be interested in coordinating with the BMFA?  If on the other hand, you paid your CAA fee with your BMFA and Club subs then it would be.

You are also completely confusing BMFA insurance with the CAA payment.  Do you really understand what each of the CAA and the BMFA are responsible for?  Rather than just posting without finding out why not try the novelty of finding out first?  The rest of us seem to manage OK.

    Hi toto,

    As grumpy gnome says....

Take a look at, its winter, who's been flying latest post  by David Ashby...

Look at the large flying wing launch and figure out how that was achieved, and the conditions it was launched into....

It may look like it a bit but it's not a "javelin" throw...

Coastal cliffs launches are easier, mostly only needing a moderate throw...a good nudge out into the lift zone....

No running off a cliff !

A flat field launch would be similar to the flying wing launch picture.

Notice the models on the ground in the launch picture also the area behind the flight line.

    I don't know that flying site, I don't think it's an escarpment...

All good for reference and the future.

    Have a great day.

    Great hobby, what a country...

    Hi Rich

Do you fly F3A aerobatics?  Well, let me tell you that the one of the greatest ways of improving your flying is to take up precision aerobatics.  I could carry on ramming this message down peoples throats but I don't.  If you want to fly precision aerobatics then I'm always happy to help.  You have been told by Toto that he's currently focused on learning to fly a powered fixed wing trainer.  Why do you keep banging on about your pet love?

By the way, there are a lot of folk, me included, who don't post every time we've flown this winter.  For the record, since the new year, I have flown 5 sessions with the 6th coming up tomorrow morning.

    Give it a rest mate.

The current CAA Operator ID and it's expiry date is shown  on the "Member Details" page rather than on the "Membership" page.

At least it is on mine. Do others not see it on there?

Ditto for me.  I've always paid through the BMFA.

Why people should expect to see information on the BMFA Membership site when they pay the CAA beats me.  Just check with the CAA if you pay through them.  Simples.

Some of the videos that I have watched make it look so easy.

That is a direct outcome of 2 things.  Practice and practising the right things.

Until I stopped taking 3 models to the field every time I went and flying each one badly, I didn't make progress.  Sticking to one model, a Wot 4 in my case, and just practising the same set of manouevres (in my case it was the B Test) improved my flying so much that I was able to pass my B after three months and 80 flights when I flew 2 x Bs per flight - or rather tried to.  After that experience i found the return on that investment was huge.  I can now choose to fly any of my fleet of 9 operational models so that it looks easy to an onlooker.  It doesn't always feel easy to me in strong cross winds though.
