Good to see you coming back. I assume you’re aware of the legislative changes forced upon us since you last flew? Nothing too onerous but you will need to get an operator ID and depending on whether you’re a BMFA member with an A - or equivalent, possibly pass a simple (almost impossible to fail) test.
It was about 4 years ago since I last flew a model. I was aware there were some changes but not really aware of the details. But I thought I would go to a club and was sure they would bring me upto date

Acro wot?
I hear laser make a nice engine that fits it...
my last model was an acro wot with a lazer 70 engine. unfortunatle I had a bit of a fly away the model went down into the trees and I could not find it. That was the last time I flew a model rc plane
-
Both of those models are a good call.
I don’t have a power plant in mind yet I sold my engines after a while of me not using them. I will need to investigate if nitro fuel is readily available. The shop I used to buy it from has since closed down . Electric might be the way to go

thanks
right model wronge place (As is usually the case with used models)
collection from Wiltshire. it is a bit of a long trip from Belfast
would grab it otherwise

due to a change in circumstances I have not done ant RC flying for about 4 years now. One of my favorite models was a hanger 9 pulse xt 60 but it is no longer available. looking through a few websites it seems to me there are fewer ARTF models to choose from and the prices have gone up alot in that time also.
Do you have any reccomendations foe a low wing sport model that will get me back into the hobby

thanks for the reply

I see the "win" tab has gone from the forum menu bar.
I was hoping to join in on the advent competion the forum runs this time of year.
is it running this year ans if yes how do i finf it?
-
I suspect most people registering will already be BMFA members or members of a similar body representing their sport. Most lone flyers wont bother with it unless some kind of enforcement is put into place

this stuff from the balsa cabin
I know it is only plastic sheet but it is just the right thickness for this purpose

Re "law", I'm paraphrasing here, but I think it was no less a luminary than Douglas Bader who proclaimed that while laws were for the obeisance of fools, they were merely for the guidance of wise men...
misquoting is not paraphrasing
"Rules are for the guidance of wise men and the obedience of fools" not law

I have been toying with the idea of buying some quality switches such as switchcraft but then you need to solder then up yourself. but it might be a good way to go to get something of a high standard

I use a Hakko FX888D and have found it to be very good. If you envisage you will be doing quite a lot of soldering then its a worthwhile investment, there is a massive range of tips, digital temperature output and maintains heat well. Also if spares were ever required, they are very well supported.
are the tips included or sold separately

What will you be using it for, electronics or piano wire?
electronics but some battery cables can start to get quite big so I need it to be a good allrounder
-
I find myself doing more and more soldering.
I have a poor soldering iron the tip is wobblily the handle gets hot and the power cable is far to short.
I would like something better.
I used to use at work a wella soldering station that was very good but at nearly £300 it is too expensive for home use.
Do you own a good onr that you can recommend?
-
I want to order some cable to make up some charge leads. What size cable would be suitable.
something like this would be good but I need to know what AWG to order

On Approved chargers Phil
The red light will turn green or go out when charging is complete
And will shut off the charge.
Dont discharge batteries to flat, it does them harm
I guess it is an approved charger as it is the same make as the batteries but I suspect it is also the cheapest the company could find. it would be a lot more convienant to find one with auto shut off
-
I was given AA AAA and p3 rechargeable batteries for work but the charger that came with them is very rudimentary. it has a red light to tell you a battery is connected but there is no indication of a charged battery you are supposed to wait until the battery is completely discharged and time the charge and manually disconnect.
Are there any better options available?
