  1. I wish I understood any of that......
  2. Thanks Chris, I've never experienced the 'ground squirrel' yet and been flying EDF's for 12 years but there's always a first and it would make a great YouTube video (so much so I'm actually quite tempted!!) If you know of any decent 'well sorted' EDF's I'd be interested. It's for a bit of fun and to hone my flying skills whilst I finish the Vulcan EDF build. T
  3. Gents, Thank you all very much for the advice - what a wonderful forum this is! It seems clear that I have a number of steps to take to get to the bottom of this - all of which I intend to put into place prior to the use of any of the new higher C packs I've purchased. Put the set-up on a wattmeter. If I use one of the old packs (puffed) will I get an anomalous reading or will it be OK? Re-position the battery - I realise that if I sit it on edge rather than flat there is space down each side to improve airflow. Make the ventilation better in the battery bay Invest in better batteries (done) Maybe (depending upon the outcome of 1 above, limit the throttle Invest in a better ESC with freewheeling (never knew these existed so a big thumbs up on that one) If all of the above fails replace the fan/motor and esc with a set-up that I can tailor to my needs - the current stuff is the cheap generic stuff that came pre-installed I think that covers everything. I'll let everyone know what the result is.
  4. Looking at the set-up I suspect a big part of the problem is the lack of any airflow in the battery compartment. Worse than that it's a very snug fit in a foam cavity - like a hot water cylinder jacket!! Might be time to start punching holes!!
  5. Thanks everyone. it’s frustrating that almost anything I’ve put in this plane is getting wrecked. I do manage throttle and only have it running ‘flat out’ on WOT for a few seconds at a time. Proving to be expensive flying. I’m wondering whether cheap ESCs or motors are more likely to damage batteries 🤔
  6. I’ve a problem. I have a Hobbyking Phazer. It’s a small foamy edf that I use for a bit of fun and flying practice. It was built for a 3s battery or so the sales spiel goes. the last two times I’ve flown it with a 3s 30C 1800 pack, the packs have puffed up and been red hot on landing. ive bought a slightly larger 3s pack that is rated at 60c which I hope will last a bit longer. Would a 4s pack be better at handling the loads or would that simply fry the ESC and motor?
  7. Peter, That’s just the ticket. Perfect, and thanks for the pointer. Tony
  8. Hi All, About 10 to 12 years ago I covered my balsa models with lightweight glass cloth and a product called Poly C which was a water based product that dried to a rock hard finish. does anyone know if this is still sold or if there’s an alternative as I really don’t like using epoxy resins. Thanks
  9. Hi David and hello again Ken! Nice to be back. For old time’s sake here’s the Gloster in its present state.... Edited By TonyS on 04/08/2020 17:15:57

  11. I probably should also add - I look a darn sight older now! (Should probably update the pic!)
  12. I have to say that I’m struggling in understanding where the time has gone. I’ve looked back over this thread and it’s been 10 years since I first started it - and the -lane is only just being finished!! Where the heck did those years go? More importantly why on Earth didn’t I finish this plane sooner?! I can’t imagine it but maybe there are still folks on the forum that participated in the discussion back then? If so, I’d love to hear from you. Anyway, most importantly, I finished the plane save for gluing the control surfaces in (not sure why I left those unglued but hey, my memory’s not that good any more....) and securing the batteries in somehow. We can then launch this weighty missile. I will link to a video if / when the action takes place. signing back in after a long absence. T
  13. Update. It all works perfectly now I've set the throttle range. Thanks everyone - Now I've finished the assembly just in time for the rain to set in.. typical. Never mind, the lawn could use it. T
  14. Oooops! I forgot all about setting the throttle range......I've only been flying for about 5 years and I am a slow learner so...... Thanks Pete. I hope that this works. Funny though. In the interim I've swapped the ESC from an old (err, for old read crashed beyond repair...) model and it worked fine. Maybe the ESC and Tx remembered one another... T
  15. Hmmm. I'm afraid that didn't work. I reversed the throttle channel and set the throttle trim to minimum. When I bound it this time all I got was continuous beeping. Previously everything worked fine then when I moved the throttle I got a series of rapid beeps.
  16. Thanks chaps - off to the workshop. I'll let you know how I get on!!
  17. Hi Chaps, Hope you're all well - it's been a while (don't ask) Quick question. I've been trying to bind a DX7 to various receivers (Spektrum and Orange) with similar results - the control surfaces work but when I move the throttle all I get is a series of quick beeps. I've bound dozens of planes but never had this. Problem is I've tried it on two different planes with similar results. Anyone come across this? Thanks T
  18. Beats me chaps. It's a pic from my first model build The Condor 40. I didnt want it here but it was what I had open when I added the thread.....odd..... lets just call it misdirection.....
  19. Thanks chaps. Why has it been bugging me?...... Because I like planes of this era, I kind of recognised it but couldn't put my finger on it and probably because that's just the way my head works...
  20. Hi to any West Wing fans out there, this has been driving me bonkers for months.... Anyone know what the aeroplane (sorry, airplane) is in the opening title sequence just before Janel Maloneys name appears? It's American and, so far as I can see a naval aircraft of the 70's ish I guess. anyone able to put me out of my misery? thanks Tony
  21. Thanks chaps. Got to be worth investigating.
  22. Having finally succeeded in getting all my FPV kit in working order I'm looking for a plane into which I can fit my growing weight of equipment. The ideal plane for me would be a large electric high wing twin motor with plenty of lifting capacity and most importantly enough space in the easy access fuselage to carry all the batteries and electronics without me having to sit on the hatch to close it!! Any ideas?
  23. Hi Christian, strange coincidence you asking but after a year of inactivity I actually got around to painting the fuselage last week. I'm away now for two weeks so no progress until I return but all that's left is to finish the painting ( I really hate that bit and wish I could submit out!) then fit a launching hook and it'll be done. its quite heavy with the 8s set up and 2s x4 battery set-up so I reckon without flaps this will come in very very hot!! Are you building one? T
  24. Just been told that Multiplex are about to hike all their prices. A good example is the Easystar 2 RR which is going from c £130 to c £170 !! Apparently it's a hike across the board so if you were thinking of buying anything Mpx then now might be the time....
  25. Thanks chaps. I see some keyhole surgery on the cards for the weekend!
