  1. Hi Stephen and John,

I came into 3 function RC after 8 years of standard 4 channel (rudder/ throttle left stick and ailerons/ elevator right). I have always used rudder with the left on take off as the norm. When I built my 3 channel Scorpion, I put my rudder servo into the aileron channel on the receiver and hence, the right stick - the result being that I now have to think during take off to use right stick on the ground.

When I first flew the model, I had to abort the take off due to verring to the right and the flight line. I thought there was something wrong with the model as I had been putting in plenty of left stick rudder- I should have been using the right stick of course. After so long on the left with 4 channel, the only way I can do it is to mentally talk myself through it on take off. Similarly, I know I will have to do the same when I fly my 4 channel models. The trick is to tell yourself that all flying control is with the right and the left is for speed (and height in the case of the Scorpion)

It's a small price to pay to fly vintage 3 channel - but worth it!

  2. Hi gentlemen,

I have been away for the last 3 weeks due to a move of house. I still don't have internet access (thanks BT!). Just managed to catch up on work computer. Good luck with the new SS if it transpires.

Interesting Skystreak Jim. The jury is still out with me and electric though. The model looks like it should go balistic.

    You look older Conrad

Yep, and I certainly feel older at the moment. About to start moving house today; that includes my workshop which took weeks to set up with benches, lights etc. Luckily I am on half-term hols.

Ken, I love the look and the ethos of these vintage models and after being in the hobby for a mere 9 years, I can see that it is the direction I want to go. Once my workshop is rebuilt, I will be starting work on a Ben Buckle Falcon. I intend to put an OS FS60 open rocker upfront.

Come on guys- you should have some influence on this forum.... let's have a vintage section.

  4. Hi Jim,

I'm interested to know if you went for a wider tracking undercarriage. I haven't really had any issues with poor ground handling.

    Cheers,

    Conrad.

    Stephen,

I was up in the loft a few days ago and found the plans for the Scopion ( must be over 20 yrs. old ) so all in the space of a day the major parts --wing ribs and fuz parts are all ready for go. And its all your fault.......

Looking at Conrads model i'm inclined to make the U/C with  a wider track, may give a little bit better ground handling.

    I'll keep you posted.

    Jim

  5. Congratulations Jim, she's a beauty.

I really like the vintage red. Is that a small servo I spy under the tailplane?  Are you using dowls for wing attatchment, or have you adopted another method?

A really beautiful model in a striking colour. Let's hope we can get some weather to enjoy these models.

Surely we should have a vintage section on this Forum?

  6. Hi Trevor,

Just noticed your comment on the basla stock included in your Ben Buckle kit. My Super Scorpion squared stock was not square and I had to replace it. Even some of the wing trailing edges were way off and had to be cut again!.

There is no denying that these kits build into lovely models, but at times, you feel like you are scratch building. My winter project is going to be a BB Falcon, so I am expecting more of the same. It's a good job we know how to bash balsa.

  7. Hi Jim,

Measured from the wing leading edge:

The forward (least sensitive) C/G is 10.5cm

The rearward (best gliding) C/G is 13.8cm

Hope this helps and would love to see some photos of finished model.

    Cheers,

    Conrad.

  8. I got my OS 40 FS on the BMFA website at a very reasonable price. If you can afford a second hand fourstroke for the model, I would strongly recommend it - it is the 'right sound' and look for this model.

With regards the weather, I am hoping there are more still, crisp days to come- I've only had one day flying with this fantastic model.

BTW, if there are any photos of your Scorpion, please share.

    Cheers,

    Conrad.
  9. Thanks for the nice comments fellas. It really is the best feeling when you maiden a model and all that thought and care that went into the build pays off.

Tim, your model is fantastic. Your scheme is very striking and is why I copied it. I also copied your rudder idea, but not for the elevators - I used a snake protruding from the rear of the fus. I hope you have a good day at the field, although for me, the SS might be beaten by the wind here on the coast at Whitby today. Hopefully late afternoon might settle down.

I am so taken by the looks and flying of these models that I am going to build a Ben Buckle Falcon- a 96'' span beast. I feel a build thread coming on.

  10. Hi Stephen,

Just to let you know that I maidened the Super Scorpion today. Whitby had still air and 19 degrees- a real Indian Summer. Tomorrow looks promising too.

The SS needed no extra weight as I had put the battery under the engine. I got the club safety officer to check out the model - always good to get a second opinion as you can sometimes not see the wood for the trees.

With an all clear I took off. I needed some down trim and a little right to make her fly true. She really was very easy to fly and even with a deadstick on approach, I stll felt totally at ease with this surprisingly responsive model. I sorted the throttle out on the subsequent flights. I wanted a relaxing ' put..put' type of model and I got it with the Super Scorpion. She looks good and flies brilliantly. The OS 40 FS combination works very well.

Thank you to yourself and others who have given advice to me along the way. A great thread, that will help others in the future I'm sure.

    Conrad.

  11. Hi Stephen,

Here are some photos of the finished Super Scorpion (well almost - I still need to glue the bit between the elevators).

It has been shamelessly copied from Tim's scheme. I really like the red solarfilm on the antique solartex. Hope you like the pics and I will keep you posted with regards the maiden flight (hopefully this weekend).

Thanks to everyone who helped me along the way.

    Conrad.
  12. Hi Flyboy3,

Yep, I would go along with that too - although with the current set up, I can only get 3/4 of an inch either side. This is my first venture into vintage and relying on rudder and elevator only gives me concerns - although these models are suitable for beginners (which I'm not), so I'm hoping it will be a nice easy maiden.

    Conrad.
