My rides were all the dayglo schemed Varsitys Tony.

That is apart from the one at RAE Thurleigh which was the Blind Landing Experimental Unit (BLEU) in mid to late '60s - that was an exciting and interesting ride LOL! We each had a landing up front in the right hand seat while the pilot did X wind landings hands off!!

  2. Thanks Jon and Cymaz - much appreciated! Hermes Moth it is then! Re the throttle response on the bottom end - yes i did have to richen the carb to get the transitiion so you are, not surprisingly, spot on Jon! LOL!

Will try the 2 second delay but I'm generally gentle on the throttle unless something drastic has just occurred!

Thanks again will keep you posted.

    Any news Mark and Rocker?

  3. OK - a few pics of the upright instal of my Laser 80. Following an email exchange and chat with a very helpful Jon Harper at Laser's I was encouraged to put a 'sports scale' exhaust on the end of a flexi pipe - I know it's on the wrong side of the aeroplane but it it's representative only and it's a lot more difficult to get it over to the correct side and past the carb!

At the moment I have not put any exhaust sealant at the joint of the flexi and the 15mm ali tube. The flexi pipe extends about 6 inches or so into the ali tube. I was not convinced this would work. For the first run I fixed the ali tube at the rear of the cockpit hatch using the hatch bolt point and a commercial 'P' clip. The clip is rubber (not silicone) lined and I wondered what sort of temperature it would withstand.

Also, when all was set up I became aware that the tank height (or rather lack of LOL!) was much too low with the top of the tank about 2" below the spray bar!

    Pics below:

So I took it outside convinced that I would have to change to an inverted set up and filled it up! I opened the carb to full and put my finger over the venturi and turned the prop over. On the first turn the fuel came through! This both surprised and encouraged me.

Guess what - started first time and ran fine!!!! The sound is a little more harsh than with a silencer but quite OK.smiley! I'm running on a 'Laser' mix I prepared myself with approx 6% nitro and 11% synthetic oil in line with Jon's recent advice.

The pipe temperature was not bad when the engine was running and only a slight smell of hot rubber was noticed. After the engine stopped the pipe was, for a short time, hotter without the prop wash acting as a heat sink for the cylinder mass.

Me? Still in shock but at least I know it works and I can keep the front fuz outline as near to scale as it can be!

Now - should I put mastic sealant into the joint between the two part - flexi and tube?? There is no 'blow back' evident but it is just a push fit.

A big thank you to Jon and others for help and encouragement.

  4. That was quick Cymaz! I'm not the best flyer but I do enjoy flying the Wottie and I fly it more than any other aeroplane in the hangar and it makes me smile too. The French guys at my club love it too and are always asking questions about it. It gets a bit humorous when I try to tell them the name of the designer Chris Foss as a 'Fosse' over here is the cess pit!!

Best of luck for next w/e with the weather - the WOT 4 should fly very well.

  5. I've got one the same as Percy's and it is a great labour saver in the workshop. I've even cut 12mm ply on the standard blade but took it slowly but it did it in a much faster time than I could've cut it with a handsaw LOL! Really like it and would miss a lot. Can't see what I need a more sophisticated bit of kit for - other blades are available to make easier work of different materials.

  6. Great choice Tony. We had two ATC camps at RAF Topcliffe and had 4 and 6 hour flights in the navigational training Varsities. Fantastic - all up the East coast - Edinburgh, Aberdeen out to Sumburgh out over the Atlantic, back down to Belfast and return to Topcliffe. Small white 'picnic' boxes with cold meat pie , sandwiches , chocolate and an apple. Soup and coffee out of the huge thermos flasks. Laying down at the bomb aimer's window and map reading all the way not to mention the obligatory go in the co-pilot's seat! Happy days...........

In any event the inverted install looks like it might actually be ok, but if it were me I would go with the upright setup. The little exhaust you have there is what we used to supply with the engines back in the 80's. We replaced it with a bigger one as noise became more of an issue.

I still think that a length of flexi pipe down the side of the fuz will be the best option

Hi Jon, thanks for the quick response. Much appreciated. Now I know there's a good chance of the inverted working I keep that as a fall back position. I'll mount it upright (Putting the mid floor back in! LOL!) and try the flexipipe. Whether I drop it out the bottom or have a go at the horizontal external pipe is a bridge yet to be crossed. Can the length of the pipe affect revs if there's no expansion box?

Cymaz - Hope Bodmin isn't too chocker this morning! Nice set up! Is that a 1/4 scale one. How do you join ali pipes?

  8. Hi Jon - thanks for the response but don't you ever allow yourself a day off! LOL! Some rushed poor quality pics for which I apologise. Yes the 80 can be made to fit but it's how much cutting of the cowl and how the exhaust will exit and where. Mark hasn't let us know yet how he got on.

This pic - standard upright fitting.

    img_1348.jpg

Front view showing carb projection and the angle on the exhaust to provide clearance from the cowl top. Problem is how to provide for exhaust to open air through bottom of cowl? Silicone pipe? Flexible? Neither seem to last long in my limited experience.

    img_1349.jpg

Upright fitting with small silencer that came with the Laser - I assume this was an original part option at the time? Bore is quite narrow but the silencer will fit.

    img_1351.jpg

The small silencer/expansion box - Laser made?

    img_1356.jpg

    img_1352.jpg

Inverted with small silencer - line on masking tape of front fus indicates height of fuel tank top when installed on fus floor.

Pic below showing vulnerability of the carb when engine inverted

Any suggestions that will help welcome. I do want to use the Laser but also want to keep cowl outline as far as possible.

    Thanks

  9. Hi Mark,

Any news on your first flight with the Laser 80 in place? I've been trying all sorts of options with my ASP FS70 and the Laser 80. I can mount the ASP upright but still have to cut the top of the cowl to ease for the header and then it's still a fight to get the down pipe and exhaust contained in the cowl. I ran the Laser with a flexible pipe and no silencer. It wasn't over loud but the exhaust note is harsher and not for me.

So, latest is that I'm am going to put the Laser in inverted like you as I really want the Laser in there rather than the ASP. If you have any observations I would be happy to have them. I have cut a space for the tank to go on the fus floor and yet to fit the throttle servo.
