  1. Brilliant job. I repaired one of my Wots that had a bad smash including the fusi broken in half below where the main wing sits. Beautiful job, BUT word of warning and something to watch for ... First flight after repair I took off OK but even with max up elevator it would not climb, my flying site is on a hill so ground drops away after take off. I knew throttling back would make it drop even quicker, not enough height to turn and try a landing anywhere flat, so I just had to watch as it dropped and flew into a hedge line and smashed into a million bits. When I checked the bits control surfaces were functioning so the only thing I could figure was I'd messed up badly with the angle of attack of the main spar? ie negative. I was a a bit heartbroken I must admit but learned a lesson I guess. Your fusi looked ok so doubt it will be worry for you.

  4. And people tell me i have too much time on my hands! Very ingenious though. I wondered how you can get such a long delay solid state, but as I understand it , it writes the data to an SD card then re reads it later? Very cunning.
  5. it shows we have a life, too....... Agreed. There is more to life than just aeromodelling..... Like motorbiking, paragliding etc. I was 850 feet above sea level on my paraglider on Thursday! (plus not had much model flying of late with this weather, so nothing to repair either!) Plus I'm not even lucky enough to have a shed to be grumpy in. Edited By Bob Moore on 19/01/2013 21:39:34
  6. Funnily enough I had Vine on two minutes ago and I'd just switched to Radio 4 cos I couldn't stand it. Today they are discussing 'do you know your central heating boiler' and of course have an expert on hand. Oh so that's a bleed valve? Oh, the radiator is cold, turn the thermostat up. I'd never have thought of that. (I don't recommend it, but I even service my own boiler occasionally, take the burner out, clean it, etc. Fitted a new thermocouple (£4) whenthe boiler died last winter. A plumber would have charged a £100with the call out to do that, or tell me my 25 year old boiler needed replacing with a modern condenser boiler (that wouldn't last ten years.)   7. I fly models and I paraglide too, but suffer Raynaud's syndrome and get very cold hands at times. I bought some Blazewear battery heated gloves. Magic. I flew, paraglided that is, 2 hours a few weeks back and had no problem with cold hands. The Blazewears were reduced price just before Xmas as a new version had come out, (at £50) but I do recommend them. I checked Lloyds Pharmacy web site and they don't appear to have any at £30 the moment? I didn't find too much loss of feel for my brakes when flying though you would lose some sensitivity on an rc tx. The thinsulate ones I linked might be less bulky. Ah well, beautiful model flying day here on Devon so went out to test the Pinto with u/c and new motor /prop etc. First attempt on the dirt track it nosed over when I applied full throttle, but I just needed to slide the U/c forward a bit. Next go it took off from the ground brilliantly. Even took off from short grass despite those tiddy little wheels. Once I'd got the CoG right (it was alittle nose heavy first flight) it flew like a dream. Plenty of power from my new motor/prop and 3s combination. Almost vertical climb. Well almost. But more than enough power for power loops. Model almost flies hands off if you want. Quite nippy at full throttle and a gentle cruise at half throttle. After 10 mins mixed flying there was still 50% left in the 1300mA 3s. I couldn't really get it to stall. Nose up with no power it just levelled out and dropped the nose gently. Flew inverted quite ok and rolls not too badly. Absolutely chuffed. I didn't actually need the rudder that I'd added, but hey ho. Might be useful? Anyhow here's the motor E-Power GF2210 1200Kv 44.3g Brushless Motor from GC £4 76 1300 mA Turnigy 3s from HK I think. A 18 amp Pentium ESC from GC. And 8 x 6 APC prop on a prop saver. The motor and esc didn't get even remotely warm. The dirt track isn't very suitable for wheels landing though and the sun was low in wrong place too. U/c was a little fragile and needs a bit of a redesigned as it wasslightly damaged when I dropped the plane down in the grass to land, but all in all a great success. What a brilliant little plane!
  9. Finally just read the latest BMFA mag and had to smile at the changes to ANO re FPV. (Some welcome changes too.) In particular though, the rules re flying of large models with the just the FPV person in control. It has to be the person with line of sight. 'the pilot in charge cannot be the FPV pilot'. Mmmm. made me think about some VERY VERY large models that are flown from the USA with most certainly no line of sight to the model (which is half way around the World blasting off missiles at someone.) I know they have loads of fail safes and all that blah blah (but have been known to crash.) I guess the equivalent ANO's in the USA are different for the military.

I have quite a few models to convert and changing to 2.4 would cost me quite a fortune, if i was starting out new then yes 2.4 would be the way foward. But why get rid of a perfectly servicable 35meg set up when you have no issues with it !!!!! Weasel 35Meg old timer...... Likewise.

  12. Doesn't look to me as though he stalled it, but a belly landing in a field would hardly be comfortable? He was fit enough to be able to climb out quickly, so I doubt if he had serious injury.
  13. I read in the comments that the gearbox disintegrated. I'd wondered why he lost comms, but maybe the radio required power from the alternator/generator to tx? It was still receiving? Iimpressive calm piloting. I think he flies for Monarch?

  15. Pinto update. I tried the Tornado Blitz and it got too hot in tests, even smelled hot, so it wasn't flown, (just not man enough) so I bought a E Power GF 2210 1200 kv 44.3 gms from Giant Cod. (web site is down so can't link it?) Heavier and more solid motor. The 1st one I received had a coil wire sticking out so GC, or Giant Shark as they are now called, replaced it (eventually) With an APC 8 x 6 and 3s 1300 mA Lipo I'm showing 140 watts max and 12 amps (18 amp esc.) so with a model around 575 gms I'm hoping that should be enough power now. Doesn't even get warm in short bursts of full throttle. I tried a test fly the other day with new motor and prop set up, but my 1st bad hand launch ended up with an immediate soft impact in long grass which broke my wing mount off (my modified idea, wing held by nylon bolt into a small glued wooden block) so that was the end of that! Anyhow, I've now changed to wing mount to a more conventional couple of dowels and rubber bands. BUT more importantly made a small undercarriage so that I can now (try) and take of from the ground. The site where I fly small models has a dirt track and I've succesfully taken off my 300 gms of Depron Edge there, so figure it should be OK. (I doubt my small u/c will be ok on grass as the wheels are very small.) The u/c was made from some quite bendy wire which wouldn't take the weight of the model so I reinforced it with some balsa. It's appears to be strong and light. I've also added rudder to the model as when I tried on the floor it looked as though I'd need rudder on take off. The rudder and u/c only added 25 gms or less to the overall weight. I doubt the u/c with take landing very well so I'll plan to drop it gently into long grass (as I do with the lightweight Depron model.) Pics below. Watch this space...
