Thanks for replies I think I need to reduce the prop a little and if not rethink the engine setup . Might keep the Saito in meantime until I get used to flying it . What's a nice petrol for that do you think ?

The Saito 82 is an excellent motor, just think it's not big enough for the Magic 90, yes it will fly it, but not with the sort of authority the model deserves.

Not into petrols myself, so not sure on that one, currently run all four stroke glow about 17 or so Saitos with the odd OS and YS.

Have to say it really tickled me when I came back from flying my Magic 90 and looked at your post, I was only saying at the field the that they were "Unobtainium" !! And there's yours, so there are at least two still alive !!

  2. Remember this is a large funfly at 6ilb 12oz with 62in span and 19in cord, giving 8.18 square feet wing area !!

To put it in perspective I have a Saito 82  APC 13x4W prop, in an old Irvine Wild Card wich is 4lb 5oz 52in span and 15 inch cord giving 5.41 square feet wing area.

  3. Hahaha, what a coincidence !! By shear luck I have been  actually flying mine today !! It's a YT International Magic 90 Funfly, bit like a Cougar 2000 on steroids.

A 14x7 on a funfly is all wrong anyway, you don't want to overspeed them..... It's all about grunt.

Mine is powered by a Saito 115 with an APC 16x4W prop, It is going to be very marginal with an 82 and the best prop for that on a funfly is probably a 13or14x4w.

I just don't think the 82 has enough grunt for that plane, used to have a Saito 91 in mine but it was a bit marginal pulling out of the prop hang, hence the 115 which is brilliant, the motor is giving 18.12lbs of static thrust at 9700rpm and the model is 6lbs 12oz all up.

The photos were taken by a club mate today !!!

Given that the breather is located between the two bearings, if the rear bearing was completely sealed how would the excess blow by oil from the case travel out?

Yes see what you mean on that, think it works on the theory that the seal isn't perfect and oil will get through and replace the grease in the bearing anyway, similar to a Saito  double sealed front bearing.

Just as an aside, most Saito singles come from the factory with a shielded rear bearing and a double sealed front, the oil can easily pass through the shielded rear, as above for the front.

MR 6001 C3 for the rear bearing . If you get the sealed or shielded ones remove the shields or seals. Front bearing being MR 608 2RU C3 . Remove the rear rubber seal .

MR 695 x 2 for the cam bearings

The Os 52 Surpass came as new with a double sealed rear bearing and I believe the front was too.

  6. Yes ASP, SC and Magnum were all made by Sanye in China and are effectively the same motor, so a crankshaft for any of those will do the job, however it would appear there is no stock of them.

Reckon your best bet is a second hand engine, think the crank is the same on the 40 and 46 so either will do, there are quite few on Ebay for around £40 (see below), but you may find one cheaper.

  7. It would appear that most models these days that require a 20cc or over are recommended to be powered by a two stroke petrol.

The problem we have found in our club is that most of this type of installation, will not pass the 82db at 7 metres noise test with the supplied silencer set up.

Most of our members (me included) are running 4 stroke glow anyway, but usually when somebody shows up with a largish two stroke petrol powered model, it won't pass the noise test.

I often wonder how the flyers we see at the shows (when they are on) running large petrols, get on at their local club.... If they fly them there anyway.

  8. Hi guys.

Just thought I would add my two penneth, have been running all my Saito and OS 4 strokes on 10% oil for the last 15 years or more with no ill effects and I do like to let them rev !! Have been using Model Technics Dynaglo 5, oil is 8% EDL 2% castor, there are other advantages too, more methanol which is after all the fuel and a lot less slime on the model to wipe down.

  9. Yes Peter I think it does make a difference the way you manipulate the sticks, as I said I am a mode 1 flyer and operate the sticks with my thumbs and don't use a neck strap, which is I think why I did not get on with the X7 and probably the new Ix20/24.

Can see what you mean about the X9D being an older JR type case, but it just feels right for me, I suppose the years I was using an old Futaba 9C with the aerial down and a Frsky module in the back, I have become used to that type of balance.

  10. MattyB has a very good point about being able to hold an Frsky tranny before purchase, have been a very satisfied Frsky user for many years well before the Taranis was on the market. With a Futaba 9C on a Frsky module and a Futaba FF6 with hack module.

A couple of years or so ago I decided the old 9C was getting a bit long in the tooth and the Taranis X7 had just come out, so I went for one. Had a very steep learning curve with Open TX but really liked the power of the system. The problem was when I actually went to fly the X7 I just could not get on with how the TX sat in my hands (I'm a mode 1 thumbs flyer), it felt like the sticks were too low on the case and I was just not comfortable with it.

This was when I clapped eyes on the Horus X12S and just loved the look of them...... Couldn't resist it and bought one, when I actually got hold of it, it weighed a ton!! and is rather large for someone with quite small hands. There I am with two very good trannies that I don't like the feel of and every time i picked up the old 9C it just felt right.

This was when I bit the bullet and sold both the X7 and the Horus, then purchased a Taranis X9D Plus SE, which I am relieved to say feels just right and has been brilliant for the last two years.

Have looked at the Horus X10S longingly but it is a similar shape to the X7 as is the new X20/24 by the looks of it, so I'm sticking with the X9D for the time being. The trouble is you can't just go into a shop and actually get the feel for the things, because they are not in the shops and I'm the only flyer in our club that runs Frsky, you don't even see them for sale at the shows, if we had any that is.

Anyway rambled on a bit there but MattyB has a point.

  11. As everyone seems to have said, more info is needed, David you said "The pushrod or one at least bent" which one was it inlet or exhaust ? Where on the pushrod was the bend ? Was the pushrod unseated from the rocker arm on inspection after the motor stopped ?
