  1. Is the gate fee £10/person or car?
  2. That would seem a very attractive proposition for the event Steve. Let's hope Barkston provides some decent, if uncharacteristic, weather for the Saturday & the effort you & Martyn put in will be rewarded. Good luck. I'm more looking forward to attending with the view of meeting other enthusiasts & their models. Whether I'll be ready with my model is quite another story as I simply cannot find any MFC's local to join. There's no way I'd take an unflown model to such an event. You mentioned Bardney Steve; any news/date? Edited By terry westrop on 30/05/2013 10:44:06
  3. Hello again Mike. Pleased you appreciate the job I've done on Chris's design. As for the merco 61, mentioned previously, I acquired this motor recently & it required a major overhaul. Bearings are cheap enough, but the biggest job was getting the crank to fit properly! It was way too tight as indeed are all Mercos I've come across. I also cleaned up the cylinder, removed ring & cleaned groove. Rings are available online, but I've not bought one, yet. I'd like to fit cap head screws throughout, but they are 1/8 bsw & hard to find. The Exhaust screws are then 6ba....?? Strange stuff. If the motor proves inadequate in power with the super silencer I could try a torque pipe. If that fails it may well be a current 61/75 from which there are many to choose.
  4. Hello again Bob. Thank you for the compliment. I wish it were paint for that is my preferred finish by far! It is in fact all Solarfilm/trim , just to keep the weight down to give the Merco 61 a chance & in keeping with Chris's own finish which too, was all Film; but I recall it to be Monocote back then.
  5. Well, my winter build schedule is drawing to a close, but I've still things to acquire & the model is as yet unflown /proven..... I'm far more accustomed to building my own design, far easier than building from a plan! As may be evident from the picture I've changed a few things but tried to keep with the appearance Chris Olsen intended. After all, it was one of the prettiest & most competent models of the time. Merco 61, rebuilt, is up front.......hmmm......we'll see Model weighs in @ 5.5 lb, so the Mero should manage it ok. Just hope the model is not too lightly built. All balsa construction, as per plan. Taildragger to save weight & I think it looks nicer (like the Orion & Mustfire) & this is Chris's World Champ's model........yes, the airplane!
  6. Hello again Steve. I thought it more effective to message you here as your PM seems rather unattended..? I've just seen the FoF & may well be in a position to visit. However, I'm not too sure if I will be ready to fly an appropriate model. Be good to see you all & find out what 'proper' aerobatic models have been built over the past winter. Just in case, in what capacity are the UKCAA participating? ie 'show style', schedules?
  7. Looks like a nice job Paul. Takes a brave model builder to finish in clear coat. The Bullet has changed somewhat since I had mine back in the 80's. Are they not reproducing the Tornado also?
  8. I have a few new 3s 2200 lipos. Should be fine for 4 minute freestyle. Obviously longer flight times for more leisurely aeros. There is room for bigger lipos if needed. Bigger motors too if one dares!
  9. That was rapid Andrew! As the doctor ordered, the latest LD. It's designed to be capable of both precision aeros & 3D. I'll post details of AUW when the model is finished. But it is very light & far more durable than the material generally used in ARTF types I've encountered. So in producing this little addition I have proved it can be done. The canopy was cut down from an old Loaded dice 40 I had left over. As mentioned previously, I hope that Punctilio mouldings will produce more from their masters if demand materialises. I've taken all the usual construction pictures should they be needed in the future. Edited By terry westrop on 05/05/2013 22:51:51
  10. Posted by David Ashby - RCME on 18/03/2013 11:01:42: Posted by terry westrop on 16/03/2013 20:41:48: Well Andrew, I've no idea if RCM&E would want the design, however, I must build & prove it first. That'll take a bit more time yet. Canopies may be available if we can locate the masters within Punctilio Mouldings, get them to cast a few. I think you can be certain we would Terry, Edited By David Ashby - RCME on 18/03/2013 11:02:19 Well, I've been a little busy of late making good use of my 20 year old balsa stock. Not only is there a repro of Chris Olsen's 1968 Upset II almost ready, but a completely new design..... It's 45" span & 47" length. Aeolian Outrunner Brushless C3542 KV1250 Evolution. 12x6 prop Any guesses what this might be........
  11. Wow, that was fast Martyn! So the Falcoln is available, but as all foam?? But it really didn't need to be any easier to put together
  12. Spot on Martyn, Goldberg! Are they still going? I still really like the look of this model. A friend had the 56 back in '77 when I certainly could not afford it. Flew brill & great for long grass sites. Easy to build too.
  13. This weather has not provided us with the best start to any flying or fishing season Mike! I suspect many of us are way out of practise @ present! That was not the Falcon I was thinking of. This example looks very 'vintage' & one I don't remember. I'd anticiapted the US kit, shoulder wing. They did Falcon & Falcon 56. I always wanted one when I first started, but they were rather expensive.
  14. Bet there was a fair ripple on that water Mike! I don't have time to go fishing these days, maybe in the future for me. I do have some gear left, but would need to acquire lots more if I were to start up again. Some of my models are 30 years old too! Some need to be finished even. Are you going to run the 49? I am not able to read The article on CO, hasn't copied well. According to the bmfa The only UK Gold medal in R/C aeros was in 1960 it would seem. Could that have been CO?
  15. An Angling enthusiast I see! Done a lot of that myself Mike, but no fly fishing nor anything competitive. How'd you do? Grafham Water's a nice place to be anyhow. I've no mag's before 1960, so I've no info for those times. Be nice to know which year Chris made number 1 in World aeros. Sounds like the manifolds were made specifically for the Merco. Any idea which pipe he may have used with that motor? My Upset II '2013' is ready in airframe, just gotta think up a colour scheme. CO's yellow example that made RCM&E front cover in April '68 looked rather nice, but I've never been a fan of that as base colour.
  16. Great to know Clive is still with us. He was extremely enthusiastic about aerobatics & a prolific builder of very nice aircraft, superbly finished. I've made a start on the Loaded Dice 30 EP David! Am taking pic's, just in case.
  17. Some interesting pictures there Mike. I presume the latter outboard servo installations were done much more recently. Bellcranks were never very efficient fro R/C aeros. I'd love to use an OS engine, would be a much better bet for reliable performance I'm certain. But the Merco is period & I just want to give it a try. If I get desperate I know I could fit a tuned muffler. Did you find that article on R/C world champs?
  18. Hello again Mike, an interesting story indeed. A great shame we lose names such as these. Am I correct; Chris was our only R/C Aerobatic World Champ? Was it 1960? Your Upset wing appears to have more sweepback, rather like Altair design. I do hope you'll finish this model. Will it be in the deep Yellow of the original? The Hi wing has a plug-in stab then? Did Chris build this also? Did he install the wing servos outboard?
  19. Moonglow, a pretty good go David! & I almost went for that design as I do have the plan. But Moonglow's a little too small really. I suspect my Merco 61 would prefer it tho However, Mike is spot on! Upset II it is; well almost. Yes, well done. I have since sheeted some, but not all of the wing as I'm trying to keep it light (& economic), again in assisting my Merco 61 to power it. As can be seen, servo boxes, not bellcranks for ailerons. I do like the upright motor format, but went for Side mounting to displace as much fuel residue as possible. There are a few other mod's I hope Chris would have approved of. But none that might trouble the attractive lines of his design. So, you have one of the originals??? From the man himself?
