  1. Posted by David Davis on 23/09/2013 08:08:53: Mini Jazz. Those who want something bigger could opt for the Jazz. Was just about to reply with the same!
  2. Sorry for the slow response, musr look at the site more often! AUW was 2lb 5oz or 1040 grams, unfortunately it now weighs about 2lbs as the other 5oz is stuck in the ground after i crashed it-however, i've nearly built another mini jazz with made up elevator instead of solid, plastic snake pushrods, light balsa etc so hopefully i should be able to keep the weight down. Only thought now is whether to mount the aileron servos on top of the wing and not use undercarriage as the grass is always too long for take offs and landings-any suggestions? Malcom, if you were to design another plane, how about a mini jazz with a high wing, more stable for novices like myself, but will still look good and fit in the boot of a small hatchback! Thanks, Ian.
  3. I put a V3 on a flying wing. The only problem i had was not following the instructions correctly and selecting delta on the gyro and not on the tx!
  4. I have an orange 3axis v2, a few times I've felt I've briefly lost control of my plane as the elevator has not responded, then a couple of weeks ago, I came out of a roll and dived head first into the ground. I put it down to my lack of experience. Makes me wonder if it was all my fault. I have the flaps set so I can switch it off, so may try without it next time. Ian.
  5. Hi, I'm new to flying, so excuse my lack of experience! To be honest, it struggles vertical as if there's not enough power or too much weight, but handles nicely for a beginner like me. I tried a roll and to fly inverted but can't remember what happened-it must have dropped and I panicked and nose dived into the ground. I built a new lighter fuselage and have had a couple of flights with this (been too windy to fly with my lack of experience) and it seems twitchy, but the jazz flies slower now. I think I prefered it with the extra weight!! Anyhow, I've ordered enough balsa to build 2 models, and plan to put a larger motor in (fits in with your moto!!), what difference would moving the cog back make to the handling? Cheers, Ian.
  6. There're different versions of the 2836, i used the 8 pole 1100kv one. I finish work at 3, but it was too windy here so spent the afternoon making a new fuselage. Tomorrow is supposed to be calm. I took the jazz out at dusk yesterday, never again-I kept losing orientation, not helped by bumping into an old schoolfriend either! Ian.
  7. Thst's light! Would have thought a 3s 1300 mah lipo would work well with that-i have a 3d foamie that weighs around the same with the 2836 motor and 1300 mah lipo amd a 10x3.7 prop, it has a 2:1 power ratio and flying time is atound 7 mins. Ian.
  8. Well, still making the fuselage between plastering the dining room, moving rad pipes etc! I flew the Wot4 foam and on the 3rd landing, hit the grass a bit hard and it exploded-going off foamies Sooo, thought what the hell, if I crash the Jazz I have enough balsa to rebuild it. Wellll, I've flown it dozen times now and am getting the hang of it, landing wise, I've hit the deck pretty hard and the only damage was a slightly bent undercarriage. Ian.
  9. Hi Robin, apologies for not replying, but the new reply notification went to an old email address?? Anyway, I used a Turnigy 2836/8 1100kv motor from Hobbyking, a Hobbyking 40a ESC with BEC and an 1800mah 3S Lipo. My Jazz is a little too heavy as I 'over engineered' it, but it'll fly fine, but not climb vertically for long as the thrust is very close to the weight of the plane. I'm currently building a lighter fuselage!! I also have some overlander 2200mah Lipos I may use as the extra weight will be offset by removing some lead from the nose!!
  10. As said, I think making a new lighter fuselage would be quicker than modifying the old one. I also have a wot4 foam-e, but it looks so good on top of the book case I'm afraid to fly it! I'm waiting for a 3 axis gyro type receiver to arrive, then I'll try it, I have used one on my flying wing and on the mini jazz. Like the look of the swamp rat though! Ian.
  11. Thanks for all your replies. I'm an engineer, and think I over engineered the mini jazz! I made an extension for the motor mount as the elctric unit is shorter than the ic unit the jazz was designed for, so if I make a fuselage with an extended nose, i can move the batts forward. Also, I reckon i could move the servos forward with lighter control linkages (i'm currently runnung 2 linkages to the elevator) and one linkage for the elevator. There is an option on the plans for a made up elevator rather than the solid one I built, and with few more mods (fitted 1/32 light ply as a strengthener) I may be able to get the weight down. Have to remove some tiles in the kitchen and then I'll see what balsa I have to start on another fuselage! Ian.
  12. Hi, it was my firdy build and i used heavy pushrods, solid tail and elevator which hadn't helped! Also, I think the glow engine it was designef for was a lot heavier than the electric motor i fitted. I could modify the fuselage, but it would be loads easier to build new wings. Battery is against the motor bulkhead. Auw is 1040 grams about 250 too much. Ian.
  13. Hi, hopefully not a silly question! I've not been flying long, but have finally plucked up courage to fly my mini jazz that I built from plans. I've converted it to electric but have had to put a lot of weight in the nose to get the cog correct. Anyway, I find it flies too fast for me, webocalc states the stall speed is 15mph. So, as I want to persevere with the plane, i wondered whether making a set of wings 8" longer would reduce the wing loading and allow the plane to fly slower? Ian.
  14. Hi Finally flew my electric mimi jazz, have a turnigy d2836-8 1100kv motor, 40a esc and a 1500mah lipo. Cog is 65mm back, but i had to put around 200grams in the nose-anybody else found this? Ian.
  15. Been learning aileron control on a swift2 flying wing and decided to buy a artf sbach with an 800mm wing span to practise landings. I've been cheating a little and used a 3 axis gyro type receiver, switching it off once in the air and back on when I get into trouble! Well it must have worked well as I fitted it into the mini jazz and put a standard receiver then promptly crashed the sbach with a dozen pieces of foam flying off and a bent motor shaft. Well, finally plucked the courage to take the mini jazz up with the gyro receiver, had 2 short flights and took it home with a mile on my face!
  16. Finally joined a club to help me learn to fly (have a wot4 and a swift2 wing) and took the electric mini jazz out in case somebody would attempt to fly it! My luck was in and after a little trimming, she flew fine! She.s about 6 ounces over weight but seemed to have plenty of power, will see if it prop hangs one day!!
