  1. Hi guys Ken if I were going to use covering of any sort, I would probably opt for the aluminium foil, but I am probably going to spray it. Jim the chrome enamel looks pretty good! I will have a look out for some of that and also for that thread that you mentioned. Anybody have any opinions or experience on the use of engine enamel? Do you think this would be too heavy ? Thanks P
  2. Hi All I have been considering doing a aluminium paint finish on my scratch built Saab Viggen as shown in my attachments. I have been looking at different products to do this and was wondering if anybody here has had any previous experience on any of these products? Alclad 2 Engine enamel : like THIS Alloy wheel paint : like THIS Tamiya Flat aluminium : like THIS Mr. Metal Others? I have heard that Alclad 2 paints are supposed to give good results if used with a gloss black undercoat, but it is expensive and only comes in 30ml bottles - How many would I need to paint a 90mm EDF airframe? quite a lot I expect...not really sure if it's viable. Also it's very thin and doesn't go a long way. Also apparently it will show up the smallest imperfection so a perfect surface is a must. Then I had a look at engine enamel and alloy wheel paints - look durable and cost effective but I'm wondering about the weight these products will add to the airframe. Any experience ? I have heard about the aluminium foils that you can get but I don't want the fuss with these - too time consuming. I want to achieve the best result with the minimum work. How did you achieve your aluminium finish? Any advice greatly appreciated Thanks Paul
  3. Hi all I recently bought some U-POL power can grey high build 1K primer spray. I tested it on some pink XPS foam which had a coat of poly-c, but it started to melt it. It doesn't melt if you spray it from 12+ inches away, but I think it would take a lot of cans to cover my model in this Way. My model is covered with glass and resin, plus has also had two coats of poly-c. Is there an alternative high build grey primer filler that I can use without fear of my model melting? Thanks in advance for any advice Paul
  4. OK many thanks for your advice guys, I will experiment with the suggested methods. Paul
  5. Martin, when you and Graham talk about epoxy do you mean Z-poxy finishing resin ? What ratio of each, or what consistency am I aiming for ? Also is filler that is described as lightweight polymer bubbles the same thing as micro balloons ? Many thanks PaulEdited By Paul Turner 2 on 18/10/2014 08:30:33
  6. The fuselage is made from styrofoam, and has been coated with fibreglass and coated with two coats of Z-poxy. Unfortunately I didn't resolve these areas before I glassed it, so now I'm having to add filler on top of the glass. I have a large rubber wallpaper spatula that I plan to apply the filler in a vertical motion around the curvature of the body. I have been lent some 'big boy' extra fine polyester two part filler which I have done a few tests with but it goes off very quick and is quite a thick consistency. Is this similar stuff to P38 ? I have lightweight filler but it's not going to be durable enough. I have read other posts which talk about mixing lightweight filler with Durhams rock hard putty, but that's not available in the UK. Durability is priority number one (as it's above the glass) but as I expect that I will end up sanding a lot of it off it has to sand well too. I was hoping for something thats as durable (or almost) but is thinner to apply and perhaps gives you an hour or so to work with.
  7. Hi all I have some ridges and pits along my fuselage. Can anyone recommend a durable filler that can be painted directly, which is easy to smooth on to a large area, doesn't go hard too quickly and sands away easily ? Many thanks Paul
  8. http://postimg.org/image/jpmhc93g3/ It is for a foam edf Saab Viggen that I am scratch-building. Above is a link to a photo of the hatch section (hatch removed) that allows access to the duct where the fan will mount (nearer the back of the fuse). There is a small lip where the fan will sit up against. The dimension of the duct including lip is 102mm and the lip is 2mm. I don't want to fit a sound system really - I'm looking for the real deal multi-blade fan unit. Weight is a consideration and I would probably opt for something lighter which didn't need such large lipo's if I could find something suitable which will fit nicely.   Paul Edited By Paul Turner 2 on 09/05/2014 20:01:52
  9. I could but somehow I don't think it'll have the same effect ! I've heard other people talk about other brands such as changesun, stumax, scheubler, wemo etc etc but can't find any for saleEdited By Paul Turner 2 on 08/05/2014 14:13:21
  10. Oh yes I forgot to mention that I am looking for one with a higher number of blades as I am looking for that turbine sounding whooshhhh. 12 or more ideally.
  11. Hi I've spent the last few evenings looking around for an edf unit to fit my scratch build but can't find a lot in this country (or I'm not looking in the right places!). Ideally, I'm looking for a unit with an OD of about 102mm to fit the duct nicely. What brands are available & where can I buy? Can anybody recommend anything? I have a budget of ?200 for fan unit and motor. I'm near Bristol. Thanks PaulEdited By Paul Turner 2 on 08/05/2014 12:39:51
  12. Yes we have done the adjustment of both needles as described many times. I've tried fuel from two different bottles of the same type of fuel both which had the issues. Tank is dampened with foam already. Perhaps it just needs more fuel before it will settle, or perhaps I will try a different fuel mixture. Thanks for your advice
  13. Yes I'm using an OS F plug too. The tank feed is slightly lower (probably about 10mm) than the fuel line connection on to the carb.
  14. Hi I was wondering if anybody had any experience with ASP engines? Me and my dad have been fiddling around for five sessions down at the field trying to get this thing tuned properly for my Acrowot, but no joy as yet and we are both getting rather frustrated! Neither of us have owned a 4S before so perhaps we are doing something wrong. The manufacturer's instructions state: All ASP's are 'timed' to operate on nitro - 5% for aero, 10% for heli. We reccommend 15-18% oil for four strokes. Too much oil, particularly castor oil can be detrimental to four stroke performance. We are using MT Irvine Sport 5% fuel (14% klotz, 4% castor). After searching, seen many posts about using higher nitro content? Engine has seen about a gallon so far. I'm using an APC 13x6 prop as recommended by the manufacturer. We have fiddled endlessly with low and high needle settings but just can't get low end to idle nicely at low RPM, and transition nicely. The needles seem VERY sensitive to adjustment! Another chap down at the field suggested on board glow. Any thoughts? Seen many posts about people having similar problems, but also many people saying that they are very happy with their ASP's. So either there is some secret that I'm yet to learn or perhaps this particular engine is a dud? Any help greatly appreciated.   Paul Edited By Paul Turner 2 on 12/01/2014 18:17:03
  15. Yes I have also heard many positive comments about the vampire too, but again not so keen on looks. Thanks guys for you're advice, I'm gonna give HK a shot and then perhaps buy something a bit nicer in a year or so.
  16. Thanks for your reply's. Brian I have seen the Habu and it's many good reviews but I'm just not that keen on the look of it. I do like the viper jets, and the tomahawk version looks very nice, but my original plan was to start cheap while I get used to the way jets handle, and then if I got into trouble then I wouldn't be too heartbroken / out of pocket. BUT, then again I don't want to buy unreliable gear. There are many people vouching for the stinger jet from HK, but I have seen a few bad reviews which always knocks the decision making process. Also, everyone has an opinion (and you don't know who is affiliated with who) which makes it more difficult still! It looks like Stuafenbiel have the airframe version only in stock for £101 plus then I assume I would need to buy EDF unit, ESC and servo's? I think it's going to be too expensive for a first timer - and it say's on the website its for 'advanced pilots' (which isn't me!) Paul
  17. Hi all I have been considering buying my first EDF foam jet, and have looked at loads of options but have ended up mostly confused about who makes what! A lot of the models that have been discussed or mentioned seem to be only available in the US, except when hobbyking have a similar model with their name next to it. For example: I have been looking at the 'Stinger 64' jet which is shown on the Freewing site, but I can't find one of those anywhere. I can however find the 'Stinger 64 mk2' on Hobbyking UK. Is it the same model? Who makes it? Is the quality ok? What about all the other models? how do I know who makes them and whether the quality is up to scratch? Would you generally say it is safe to buy from them or risky? Does anyone know of a list of manufacturers (and their uk equivalents?) and a list of the distributors of those products? Many thanks Paul P.S would also love any opinions on which is the best quality / value first EDF!
