Ok so after a 3 year gap from the hobby due to splitting up with partner I gave the hobby up because running costs of a house where to great to take on alone. Now im settled sharing a house with a friend and suffering from poor health due to just finding out I have cancer of the stomach and undergoing chemo whilst I await my op to remove the stomach I thought maybe now is a good time to return to the hobby, to help keep me motivated and looking forward
.So with a love for designing models and building them I decided an arf was no good for me I needed a kit, the only problem is where do I build it I only have my bedroom till im well enough to go out and convert the coalshed which is insulated and quite large infact... I decided I would browse the net and have a look at large office desks ( the old ones with drawers that weigh a ton). Didn't want to spend allot of money and quickly found that these big old office desks are now selling for daft prices on ebay. so I went on google and typed in work benchs along with workstations. I even had an hour or 2 on ebay looking. I saw some realy nice designs I may add but they also had really nice prices attached of a £100 plus. Then google gave me the answer and lead me to a product argos is selling at the moment. After looking at the measurements and thinking well its smaller then I need by a few inch or so but seing such good reviews I thought stuff it £49.99 isn't going to get me anything better then this to build a few kits on...
I have to say I am over the moon with it. Its actually bigger then you think once assembled and fits in my bedroom just nice. I will take some pics of it later on after iv cleaned up the mess so you guys can see just how big these are. went together like a dream. Its not heavy duty but perfect for people like us just wanting to build models on. its over a meter wide n 2ft from front to back. the drawers is on ball bearings so is ever so smooth. the work surface is big enough to build most 40-60 size fuselages on, and to top it off I found another source selling a table matching this that's 1.5 meters long without the drawer and upper shelving for £27 delivered, same framework colour and everything on Ebay so to get one of those and put along side this will be perfect for any bigger projects.
The downside to giving up this hobby is something always drags you back to it so I figured this time I was going to buy all the tools and a proper workbench because having all the tools and a good space to build on really does make building allot easier and more enjoyable.
But anyone looking for a cheap building bench that looks good really should get one of these because for the price and quality and what it actually does offer is unbeatable. Sealey do the exact same version of this and there wanting £150+ and the only thing missing off this is the sealey badge there really is no difference. I am tempted to go get a second one of these for the under storage space and also the extra drawer and upper storage as well as back plate having drilled holes and hooks for hanging things up such as servo leads or metal rulers and screwdrivers. one for building the other for covering and finishing on but side by side so if I need the extra workspace when building a wing then it can spill onto the second one.
My nurse is going to have a shock in the morning when she comes haha she will think iv moved into a garage.
Having said that maybe this is something some of you guys could find useful and at that price its a great little investment so I just had to share it with you guys. Now for me to track down a second hand bandsaw and dremmel etc so I can get cracked on with a little bit of building

Ok iv always been a glow person for the last 16 years or so and now starting with electrics. im a little confused as to what is suitable for the hobby king sunbird glider and what lipo pack will give the best flight times. Im currently on there site now looking at escs and motors, placing an order for all the bits to complete the model so I can get started on he build when the bits arrive, but struggling to decide what motor will work. one thing I need is the motor to mount from the front to a bulkhead like older traditional motors used to because im aiming to round up the front of the fuselage and make it a much nicer shape then a square box, also need help as to what folding prop will go well with it.
So if anyone can help me pls do so.

Ok so 2 possibly 3 years ago my friend bought this mustang off ebay. it was advertised as a 90 size model and wanted alitle bit of work. He drove all the way to hull I do believe and collected it.
Upon getting it home he discovered it wanted more work then he had planned or even liked to do. So after a chat and a long passion for large warbirds I thought its just the type of project im looking for. With abit of bashing here and there im sure I could end up with a nice scaleish mustang which im sure I will.
However im wanting to find some history about this artf so I can infact find more out about all up weights and a replacement canopy and cowl and so forth.
cant quite remember the wingspan but im sure its 71 inch fuselage is made from fiberglass as you can tell with the state its in. It does have all the airlerons flaps and elevator and rudder and so forth but im striping the model back to bare wood and gel coat and need to carry out the main repairs.
The wings airlerons and flaps are on the same level which isn't scale... usualy the airlerons step out at the hinge line and not hinged at the same point as the flaps if that makes sense.
The cockpit was origionaly just flat and not open. I have cut this out to eventualy build a nice scale cockpit to hopefully fit a full size pilot in there.
As you can see its had a ruff life and has been beaten up badly with all the filler. this is to be removed and glass cloth put in place internaly and then fill the what will then be a dent with gell coat and flatten off.
So who out there can help identify the maker? ps the engine in the pic is an st3000 I was planning on fiting but decided another model needed it more then the stang. When and I emphasize the word when lol it is completed il be putting a petrol engine in though not sure yet as to what size.
As you can tell from these last 2 pictures its been shot at by the gerrys.... I haven't a clue why theres so many holes.. one was obiously for the switch lol.
and for those of you who are wondering why im bothering with all the damage it has.. I enjoy repairing models that other people would normaly throw away or burn. When I was growing up I couldn't afford new planes or kits I relied on saving all my pocket money up for a year to buy a cheap little kit. id also be gifted models that had been crashed by some of the club members. They would say to me theres a good wing there for ya and a good tailplane maybe you can use them to repair another model. and over my childhood I learned how to rebuild and repair a model.
Even to this day I love buying a damaged model or inheriting one that would usually be put in the burning bin. I just love bringing life back to something someone would deem as a right off.
So who made this artf?
Also anyone selling any damaged warbirds of similar size? anything considered just not foamys and needs to be in south Yorkshire for collection.

I paid a mere £15 for the kit from a club member
those where the days when kits were falling off shelves at such cheap prices. im no fan of arf's id rather buy wood and a fresh pack of blades and glue and build. flying is only half the fun with this hobby designing and building from kits and plans makes the other half.Lindsay I do believe you did the bat thing build and designed it. have to say it does look quite a fun characteristic model.

But yeah id love to get one of these kits now. iv emailed the new owner about possibly buying one but his contact details were lst updated in 2007. fingers crossed he may produce one to order or may for an order of several because with todays technology im sure a pair of twin edf motors it would be a blast along with micro retracts

On his website it does state that in 86 RCM&E did a review on his kit. aswell as 2 other mags. infact heres the quote

Does anyone remember the kit? could be built as electric or with an engine on the front. I once built one but it went up in a big curve and refused to pull back out when it rolled onto its side and headed back down to terrafirma. The problem with that was I had full elevator to get it off the grass and quickly found out I couldn't let the elevator go because it would have just fell out the sky so I think I had the cg wrong. I was 15 at the time and proud that it had left the ground because many members had tried with similar jet designs and never got them off the ground. now im 28 cough wiser im looking for this kit again. I remember it was blue foam wings with a plastic fus. was a nice little kit sure as hell hope I could drop on another for a winter build.
His site still lives but was last updated back in 2007 so I doubt the number and email address will work for Phil Dorren. bought the rights to the phantom

Well here's tonight's updates. Fus decked though I am not happy with the laser cut turtle deck sheeting. it worked out short and does not meet properly on the upper center spar. luckily I will be able to either fill it or cut a thin slither of sheeting to slot in. wing has been built. this was actually a very easy wing, just dry fit it all together then just run some thin cyno over the whole structures joints. took no more then 10 minutes per wing to assemble and glue. and further 10 minutes to join together and sheet the center section. also enclosed a pic of what they call instructions. all in all I am happy with tonight's progress. only the rudder and stab and elevators and ailerons to make. Cant fit the motor yet because I need stand offs for it.

Ok so iv still not got anything done. been too busy at hospital and feeling unwell. however iv slept most of today and not long since woke up so its going to be a long night and considering I feel fairly good im going to spend a few hours on the xtrim.
The sunbird kit turned up today from hobbyking and must say looks to be good quality wood. instructions are better then the xtrim as well haha. Will include pics when I upload pics of the xtrims progress.

Ok so iv just ordered off hobbyking for the first time. fancied an electric glider for some time now so ordered there laser cut kit of the Sunbird Electric Glider. looks similar to the bird of time... also thinking of kit bashing the fus to a nicer shape by rounding off the sharp lines of the fus. anyone recommend what motor and esc and battery to get from hobbyking because im a newbee to elec models. als0o has anyone built this model yet? so I have another model to build after this ones finished.

Hey guys no updates been unwell the last few days so spent a lot of time sleeping. Feeling half decent tonight so going to try squeeze an hour or 2 in tonight after nurses been. Not got as far as the wings Simon b, will have all been well tonight. I intend to finish the fus. only have the front upper decking and rear decking to do and the wing hatch.

Gary funny you should say that a nurse was telling me not 3 days ago she had been with her partner and it was cloudy also. \although the day they departed back to uk was bright and sunny with a forcast for a clear night so she was gutterd.

Ps john im only in Barnsley bently is closer then leeds but leeds have a bigger variety, the only downside is they don't like to do discount on big purchases lol where as bently did. especialy when I flashed my credit card in there haha.

ready for next saterday....possibly. although iv just realized I didn't pick up a dam y lead or extension lead, yes its electric which is better for me at the moment because with glow engines theres breaking the engine in and constant messing around with mixture and having to refill etc, so for me at the minute constantly bending down and standing up is a problem at the moment due to a pipe coming out the side of my stomach that's linked to my bowel so I can pump a liquid feed in bypassing my stomach. so electric seemed the less hastle free option for now. by time the cubs done il be in the clear and all healthy again fingers crossed and bending down on hands and knees for long periods of time wont be too much of a big deal.

last time I went into a model shop which was in fact Bentley at Doncaster I maxed out my 24hr old credit card of best part of 1100 quid followed by 2 hard years paying it back lmao. lesson learned very quickly.
Colours will be solarfilm transparent blue with white solartrim for the upper. my sneaky way ov avoiding having to paint the cowl haha.
yeah the cubs certainly going to be a big build so I thought something like this will get me in the air quickly and brush up a few building skills. I almost bought the wot 4 kit but trying to stay away from glow. small electric and petrol engine for the cub.
Im currently picking the cyno off my fingers thinking here we go again the joys of cyno :D

Accuracy of parts fitting are spot on. iv yotubed the model and it seems its been around over 7 years so im wondering if its just a batch of old kits Leeds models have bought to sell back on. as I say instructions are useless but everything fits very well indeed it just leaves you abit clued up as to how far you get before you can run some cyno on the joints to move to next part and so forth. If id have been abit better health wise the fus would be done and id be on the wing right now. anyone with some experience could build this in under 48 hours. maybe 3 evenings 4 at a push, Was it worth 70 quid. il let you know when iv finished building it because the jurys still out haha.

Ok so the instructions are as much use as a chocolate fire guard. no English no description just lots of exploded diagrams with lines in all directions. talk abou head scratching. luckily trial fiting and so on has got me through ok. heres tonights update. excuse the make shift building board but iv not had time to build a proper one yet,

Ok so after deciding to return to the hobby while I recover from a few medical problems I thought id get few planes again and try and have some fun.
So after paying a visit to Leeds model Center at crossgates I came away 200 quid lighter :/.
Decided a nice quick way back into the air that's not ARTF will be this little extrim 3d. never heard of artex but the wood looks to be stamped with graupners name so that's possibly a good sign. The kit was 69.99 but when you add a tranny n receiver and lipos and other stuff it all adds up. just unboxing now so will take some photos and get them on here asap. anyone built and flown this model?

Thanks matian. It does fly well doesn't it. Also flys very scale like. Like I say she should be a real floater and at 14lb in weight then thats pretty damn good . That means room for installing a removable camera for flight videos etc.

Just found a video of pavalos cub flying. From the video it looks to be a nice floater so I doubt stainless steel will be an issue in the weight side of things

Thanks Alan and yes will power really does help with this illness. I am only 28 and have a long life ahead of me and something like this isn't keeping me back or holding me down. I new I would one day possibly end up with it due to it being a big problem in my family its wiped all my mums side out apart from my uncle and all where stomach cancer. Ended up taking 3 hospitals to diagnose it and doctors repeatedly saying its not cancer your too young. Least St James's at Leeds listened to me and carried out the checks to in fact find out I was right. Its a shame 2 hospitals missed it because it makes you wonder how many other people are in fact miss diagnosed.
I know the argos website have the size and dimensions on there listing but believe me its a lot bigger then you think. and the framework is a little chunkier then in the photo. Going to keep an eye on the mdf worktop to make sure it doesn't warp as it is not very thick but considering its in a warm dry environment I shouldn't see any problems with it warping but if your going to use it in a garage or shed where the air temp changes regular id be tempted to call at wickes or b&q and grab another sheet and double it up just for piece of mind. Nothing worse then building a wing to find out its warped due to the work top warping.
