  1. Hi, was wondering if there was a way to trip a switch/relay when my main battery falls below a certain voltage on an electric plain. I tried using one of the low voltage alarms, but unfortunately my hearing is not great on this type of tone. So, i was thinking about using some strobes connected to this same alarm & on some testing, seems to be ok. But is there another way using a DX8 or 6 to do this without going to the expense of onboard telemetry.

Hi Chris, what gauge is the train? I run gauge 0 on a single cell 600 lipo with an inverter which takes it up to 12v . Last time I bought some inverters they were £1 each from China, on a tank loco it fits in in the coal bunker and for a tender loco the battery goes in the tender under a card plate with a dummy load of coal on top the esc is from Micron RC. Just un plug the battery when finished .

Hi Eric, sorry for not getting back, for some reason i am not getting notifications. I have got an ON30 layout & using a 3 cell 11.1 1300ma, only because its all in a goods van & i could get a 2500mah battery in this wagon. How much running time do you get from a 600mah lipo??

    Hi Christopher,

By chance I have been investigating this system too, for a model train enthusiast here in the Netherlands. The "Selecta" knob is comparable with switching model memories in a regular RC transmitter. This means, as Dick has just mentioned, you need special receivers that will continue the last received channel information indefinitely. A normal Spectrum receiver would defer to the fail safe settings in such case, meaning that the relay will default to on or off, depending on the fail safe settings you have programmed for that channel.

( I also read about the manufacturer of that system having stopped production of certain types of equipment)

    Max.

Hi, most rc train users go with deltang receivers with this transmitter. You can get the old & good R60 ones. But the more up to date & with more channels are not easy to find. i was told this builder is a one man band & is having trouble keeping up. This is why i was looking for an alternative. If i can get the transmitter to send a pulse, this would be fine as i can always use a latching relay.
I also noticed micron are bringing out a new & updated version very soon. http://www.micronradiocontrol.co.uk/product/micron/mrc_mr001.html

  4. Hi, i think i have solved bit with the receiver above as i can use landing gear as 1 switch & Aux 1234 for 4 more. To these i can connect a relay/switch to give me 5 switchable items. With my transmitter "IN PHOTO BELOW" I can bind up to 12 receivers with each receiver having 5 switches. Now each receiver would normally control a train for forward/reverse horn, whistle & sound. With the transmitter below, i can control 12 trains, but would only want 3 or 4 running at once. So i now have the possibility to control 8 other receivers with 5 switches, = 40 switches & i can triple this as i can bind 3 receivers to one channel, so it could be 120 switches. Oh! The transmitter below works on a spektrum DSM2/DSMX internals. Just got to get 2 receivers & try it out.

  5. Hi, sorry for not getting back. I am not getting notices for some reason. This is for controlling scenery light & points on an rc train layout. I have found a compatible receiver that seems to be programmable on the outputs, using a programmable card.  But cant find a video or any info i can understand.

Do you have a spec sheet for the BMS?

I bought one for electric bike use, unused as yet. The spec sheet says it charges individual cells to 4.2V. that's spot on for Lipos.

It also limits the charge current, I forget the figure. It limits the discharge current too, to 20A in my case. So both of these need to suit the battery and the use case.

Not picked out a BMS as yet as i find one that seems good & read up on the tests & find out they are more of a protection than a true BMS. Nik's idea might solve it with a 4 way plug as i have a good balance charger.

    Hi,

I would suggest a small - high current not required - 4way connector.  The female part on the model and the male part shorting pins in pairs for pos and neg power.  It would act as an isolation plug. Charging can then be external as with the isolation plug removed the battery is completely isolated from the model electronics.  Just a thought.

Nice idea. Would just need a 4 way plug that is an easy push fit as the train wagon is not the strongest. But it would solve any shorting out.

  7. Hi, thanks for the replies. It's actually for an RC train & i am fitting all the rc & power in a goods wagon with a simple 2 lead pos/neg to the train motor. The battery is a 1300mah lipo that is best at the lowest part of the carriage behind the loco to help with the center of gravity. So all the RC control & other lightweight bits will be on top of the battery. The carriage/wagon will come apart, but wouldn't like to keep doing this.  So what i am attempting is a jack plug socket for charging. Now this will give me the problem of at least one of the 4 jack terminals shorting as i connect the jack if wiring for a balance charge.  So! i am down to using a 2 pin jack & an onboard balanced charging board of some sort if i can work it out.

  8. Hi, not sure if i am missing something? is there a way to Unsubscribe to a thread. I can find all the ways to follow a thread, but to not follow is not so easy.
It was a thread i started & was expecting a few replies. But has gone a bit off topic & have had around 70 emails & would like it to stop.

    Cheers

  9. Slightly off subject. But for once i would say thank goodness for grants. A friend has just received 2 x 50K grants that has temporally saved his business. He was able to put all of his borrowings into " what is" an interest free lone for "i believe" 6 months. He also received them both with in 10 days.
Oh! He had 3 limited company's & applied for grants on 2.
    Take it wile its there.

Very interesting, I would like to know their reasoning for going as a limited company? I do see some advantages.

    B.

Must admit i was surprised with a club that only has a three grand turn over. We are in a very rural area & maybe they are worried about a model plane writing off a tractor? or similar.wink

As they was eligible for some sort of grant with covid & didn't want to upset the apple cart.

Grants are available Christopher, for Struggling Legitimate Businesses to pay rent to their Landlord during lockdown

The Local Councils award these grants

Flying Clubs are not Legitimate Businesses, but some clubs think they might be.

Strange you should say that. My club seems to be a limited company..Maybe this is the reason.

What I was told many years ago but never confirmed was that the BMFA got some money for very club registered with them from the sports council?

    John

Not something that I am aware of, I suspect a case of chinese whispers.

It wouldn't surprise me as the club i belong to was really stricked on the covid side of thing "rightly so" As they was eligible for some sort of grant with covid & didn't want to upset the apple cart.

I don't know of any financial advantage to clubs and having been a committee member for over ten years I think I should have heard of one. What I was told many years ago but never confirmed was that the BMFA got some money for very club registered with them from the sports council?

    John

Must admit, that sounds very feasible.

I've had a Nat West cheque book for the last 50 years they are really handy for things like subs etc, I can't see all the older generation doing internet banking, my wife does ours so I'm grateful 😀

    Regards Ray

Im getting older "64" & will live to 100 out of spite to get my pension money back. lol. I was in my 40s when i last wrote a check. & I bet within 25 years it will be all electronic of some kind & wont be such a thing as a high st bank, which will please the government as it will all be traceable. No more cash. That will get the building trade worried. lol

  15. Will be interesting to see how clubs get renewal & BMFA money at the end of the year. I joined my local club this year "bad year to join as a newbie" & they said send a cheque or postal order. I said can i do a bank transfer as i hadn't had a cheque book for over 20 years. this included when i had my own business. In the end i phoned my bank & spoke to a nice young girl who said no problem & added that this was a 1st, as she had worked at the bank for 3 years & had never been asked for a cheque book.. So with covid about, lets hope everyone has a cheque book..

  16. Thanks for the reply's. Quite possibly me being a skeptic & none trusting on all things with money. I am also pleasantly surprised of clubs doing all the extra work for nothing.
I now say the clubs should get a discount for bulk purchasing of membership. If i buy a 1 shirt for £10, fine. But i would expect a discount if purchased 10-20-30-40 shirts, but i suspect the BMFA would just increase membership price to pay for this. Thanks for the clarification.

  17. Hi, can anyone say if model flying clubs get a kick back or discount for club members joining the BMFA via the club.?? I only ask as one club local to me insists on members joining through their club & another local club strongly encourages you to join via the club.
Now i have no problem this at all with a club making some extra cash to help the club along. In fact i like the idea, but would like to know, as i cant see a club going to all the extra trouble for nothing.

  18. Ah!, Like it Steve. I have looked around & lots of white 8x4x4mm correx sheets, but just trying to find an outlet that will do less than 25 sheets @ £80 which is only £3.20 a sheet, but not building that many. lol.
Did you find a certain thickness better to use & was any particular glue preferred? Thanks.
