  1. With winter well and truly here and lots of rainy weather, i decided it was time to get back on the Concorde build. got round to sheeting the top of the wings and gluing the UC bearers.

Pretty happy with the result, has some bumps but hopefully will sand out. had a small issue where the gap for WB1 closed up but hopefully will be an easy fix.

Also ordered the edf, servos and wiring pack from 4 max, went for the FMS fans. 1080g of thrust each should mean over 2:1 thrust to weight ratio which should help with takeoff!

Been dreading doing the fuselage and keeping the formers straight but might try to setup a jig to help with it.

A few pics and video of progress.

    Hi gary

i can’t fully recall now to be honest, I would have to check the plans but from memory are the chocks shown on the plan at different heights at various key locations around the wing?

ie I don’t think it was just one chock at 9mm but various chocks at different heights ?

I don’t think I had a massive (if any)  imbalance ..  I’ll dig the plans out tomorrow evening after work and have a look

thanks Craig, on the plan it reads to have 9mm at LE , 2mm at mid and 5mm at TE.

but at the 9mm point it seems to have a 4mm gap to the ribs. Ribs look ok at mid and TE

  3. So I’ve finally had my glues arrive going to use thin ca to rack in place and bought some aliphatic as I’ve heard some good things

    started pining things in place.

before I glue anything did anyone have this gap between LE1 and R2/R6. I’ve chocked up the le 9mm as the plan states but look like it’s got a 4mm gap.

Did anyone have to chock it 14mm or sand down the tabs to fit?

    Gsky,

You are very brave attempting this considering that it is only the second ever and an expensive model if it does not work out. I have been at it for 63 years now and this caused me problems, some due to trying previously untested materials. Search as I may I cannot now find my original build blog for this but the pics should still be on an old laptop.

    Good luck.

thanks martin. Yes probably a silly idea but this model makes me so happy even just sitting on my boat in pieces.

    Hi Gsky

excellent, I’ve subscribed to your thread

if you take your time you will be fine and will enjoy it.  I made mine a few year back, one of the challenges is keeping the fuse straight and narrow.   Not shown in this pic but I used some angled Ali from b&Q to jig it straight as I added the stringers

I think for retracts hobby king did a version that fitted exactly but that’s if they still have them

thanks Craig I’ll have to give that a try with the Ali angle. Keeping the fus straight will be a challenge.

  6. Hi All,

I manged to convince my better half to get me another plane for Christmas and she choose the TN concorde from the wishlist.

As the title suggests this is only my second build so will probably be a challenge but i love the plane so hopefully that will motivate me to finish it.

I need to order some glues and bits before getting fully stuck in. i'll try and send some updates as it goes.

im sure i'll have plenty of questions.

    Spotted this...

Do you want a kit or plan?

For second ever build i would suggest avoiding stuff with awkward shapes. E.g hurricane is more straight lines that a spitfire.

Kit would be best, with laser cut wood pack. I do see what you are saying about the awkward shapes but hurricane isn’t quite doing it for me 🙂

DB Sport & Scale have plenty of British kits of British planes  - maybe a Vampire or their Spifire would fit the bill...

the DB spitfire looks very nice. Bit bigger than I was looking for at 2m but I guess bigger flys better. Out of stock but will keep an eye on it.

I agree with SC on Concorde. It can be iconic British whilst also being iconic French.

There are a couple of threads on the TN one on this Forum. 4x EDF puts the cost up, retracts make it even worse. But beautiful and uncommon as a model.

yes the Concorde would be great. I agree the retracts are pricey but it will be a slow build so could split the cost over some months.

any ideas what is more challenging to build, tn Concorde or DB spitfire?

Stan down at Phoenix Model Products does a Tucano (not British but flown by the RAF) and a Chipmunk (very British and iconic) and I know he is working on an Me 109 ( not British but definitely iconic). Stans stuff is always designed so that it is easy to make a good job of it. His website is undergoing a major migration at the moment but you can always give him a ring. 01626 332287

Thanks wookman. Had a quick look and gave Stan a call. The kits looks great, nice detail in the instructions. We’ve got some of those models flying at our field but not quite tickling my fancy.

  10. Hi all,

looking for some input on my next build. Would like to have a British iconic plane (IC)/jet (edf). Max span 1.6m.

would be my second build. Flown balsa, foam high/low wing and jets but no warbirds. Would like to avoid expert level models for flying/building.

I fly off 100m short grass.

    was thinking about spitfire/tempest/sea fury/ Vulcan/ concord.

My short list would be the TN spitfire 1.6m or TN concord. but open to other brands of kits.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

  11. Thanks for the replies everyone. I checked and my frame rate is set to 22ms.

the initial issue I was having with the as3x was that the rudder was correcting In the wrong direction. I then turn up all the gains to help see the directions and then noticed the elevator was behaving strangely with stick input.

sound like the wot 4 has analogue servo and the only plane I have with analog. So seems like I just turn up the gains too much.

im still not sure why the as3x rudder direction was wrong even after double checking setup orientation and doing a “relearn servo settings”. Maybe the analog servos again.

  12. Hi all,

anyone know if it’s possible to use an as3x gyro with standard wot4 servos?

ive recently installed an as3x receiver setup the plane and all worked well. The. Setup up the as3x and the servo seems to be very noisy and even burning out!

  13. Very close now, did some taxi tests and really happy with how it’s turned out so far.

Last thing now is the c.g still too tail heavy and that’s using a c.g of 75mm from the LE (manual says 60mm).

needs ~100g at the engine to balance with an empty tank. Could I move my battery to sit under the motor? That way saving adding an extra weight?

Sorry, just seen the date of the original posting, probably built it by now.

Anyway good practice using the new website.

Hi Russ actually I’m still building this one. taking it easy as I bought this kit as my first plane so been trying to build up my flying experience before flying this one.

I’m not far off pretty much on the covering stage too but I decided to make life difficult and add some navigation lights too.

I noticed that you showed an 11 x 5 prop in your photo.

The OS 40FP  won't rev but it will turn an  11 x 7 prop and that's the correct prop to use - everyone may say that's wrong but it's correct (at least for most versions of the 40FP)  See the engine tests at the time.   I was disappointed with my 40FP until I studied the engine tests and realised it would turn a large prop.   Of course the 11 x 5 will work but it won't do any more revs, so the 11 x 7 will give more power.

that’s good to know! Will have to give an 11x7 a try. I just went with the OS manual but haven’t done much research into it
