  1. The joiner (singular) is a good tight push fit so I was really asking if I need to epoxy the root ribs together. But upon thinking about it, that's not going to add any real strength is it?So if I'm not going to glue them, what tape is good?
  2. First ARF build as a returnee after a 5 year lay off. When it comes to joining the wing halves together on the high wing Calmato the instructions suggest that all you have to do is push the substantial plywood dihedral brace into each half and tape the two together over the centre section ! Seems a little risky to me but I appreciate that things change over the years....................will this work or should I really be using epoxy?
  3. Hi Steve C, Got mine yesterday so I've been working on it today and got most of the fus done.Got a bit of a deal on some new 3s 2550 (50C) Flightpower batteries so I got 4 with the intention of running them as paralleled pairs (they fit easily) giving me 5100 capacity. Got to get some leads made up for both the charging and the balancing. Is yours flying yet?
  4. Oops, many thanks to you then David the gesture was appreciated. Regarding the "mucking about" that's exactly what I am doing! Mucking about and building my own Tx on 2.4 from the Single Channel Site. I've got a proper modern aircraft, an Electric Kyosho Calmato and Spektrum Radio. But, Haven't built anything in ages so I'm thinking I might build either the Simplex or maybe a Band Boy for the S/C stuff. Always rather liked the Vic Smeed models and can remember successes with my FF Tomboy some years ago. On that basis I thought it might be fun to relive the FF thing but with a rudder................who knows !!
  5. Ah, found the dihedral info, 2 1/4" under each tip.
  6. Thanks to RCME I now have a plan but I'm a little worried about the lack of angular difference in the incidence of the wing/tailplane. On the plan they are set at 0/0degrees and although I understand that this will work on a 2 or 3 channel model that has elevator control I'm not sure if it will give enough stability on a single channel rudder only model. My thoughts are that it will fly really fast and not very free flight-ish! Given that this will be my first foray into single channel button pushing, should I add ,say, 5 mm under the LE of the wing? Plan is to fly it with a cheap outrunner, an Emax CF2812, and prop it down 'till it flies like a FF model. All the usual preliminaries like testing it over "long grass" to see how the glide is etc. What do you think?  Also as a, by the way, what's the dihedral angle of the wing? Cheers SteveW Edited By steve watkin on 26/01/2012 20:50:40
  7. Posted by lettuce. on 21/01/2012 20:52:17: check the date of the o.p guys. i don't think he's about anymore. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);  Ah.....................................Doh !!
  8. OK Cheers. Another question though please, what motor and battery was used? And was it over powerful? Because I assume I really don't want to overpower it if it's going to be single channel? So motor and battery recommendations would be welcome. Most likely I'll buy from GC 'cos there are some other things I need from him.
  9. Great as that's what I'm trying to re-create.On the later RCME plan were any changes made to the wing and tail incidences to make it more suitable for modern proportional radio?
  10. Was the original back in '64 designed for single channel?
  11. Anyone know where i can get a plan of this little model published way back in 1964. The Feature by Maurice Ashby is here and I really fancy knocking one of these up for electric, to have a go at modern single channel. Been inspired by this site so I'm going to have a go at making a Tx !!!Edited By David Ashby - RCME Admin on 20/01/2012 09:23:51
  12. I have a DX4e that came with a Blade MCPx and I intend to use it on a 4 channel electric trainer that uses 2 servos for the ailerons. So two questions please,1/ Is there a way of plugging both wing servos directly in to the rx (was planning to buy an AR600) or will I have to use a Y lead?2/ Is there a simple switched 5th channel on the Aux switch?
  13. Thanks Tim, I'm not taking BB too seriously, as you say a 60 may be a tad too big ! I think I'm at the point of "go ahead" the shopping list looks like this:- Calmato E-TR 2 off 3sx4500 Lipos (Giant Cod) Spektrum 6 channel RX (to use with a full range 4 channel Spektrum tx from my Blade heli) Black Mantis 60A esc & programming card. (Giant Cod) 4 x Hi tec std servos (or should I use the old JR coreless that I found in my box of bits?) Fusion LX61B Pro Eclipse AC/DC LiPo Charger (allready got this) Y lead Posted by Tim Hooper on 05/01/2012 09:24:13: Steve, Ignore BB - he has no idea what he's talking about. A .61 would be far too much for the Calmato. Now if he'd suggested a .32 - .40, then I just might give his suggestion some credence...... A 60A ESC should be just right. I can't comment on the Mantis range myself, but I've had no problems at all with any of Turnigy Plush range since I started using them a couple of years ago. tim   Edited By steve watkin on 05/01/2012 13:25:42 Edited By steve watkin on 05/01/2012 13:26:43 Edited By steve watkin on 05/01/2012 13:27:50
  14. We will be able to compare notes ! BTW are you aware there are two versions of the electric Calmato? The old and the new. Tim is talking about the new one which is Kyosho part number 10051, two servos in the wing and the battery hatch on the top. (The old version is part number 10050 and normally £20-ish cheaper)
  15. Hi Steve,  Lucky escape foam aint the best but it sometimes flies well !!I'm in a similar position to you and wanting to get in the air quickly I have ordered a Calmato as recommended by Tim Hooper earlier in this thread. The other one I quite liked the look of was the Seagull E Pioneer, may be worth a look at these as an all wood alt. Also found a web site for a kit of the Telemaster called http://www.telemastersalesuk.co.uk/ They have kits and plans of well tried trainers. Good luck and keep posting as to what you finally decide please. SW
  16. Hey BB I gave all that up about 5 years ago and moved on to getting fit by doing lots of cycling. But now I'm returning to RC for the spring and want to fly more locally and the only option is with this new fangled electric thingy!Still got countless glows and even diesels up stairs but I like the idea of electric even if it's just to make the airframes last longer.Thinking about it, i may just get the Mills out and give it a run, be the first time I've started a diesel for about 5 years.
  17. So I'm going to need a 60A speed controller? Will this be OK-- http://www.giantcod.co.uk/black-mantis-60amp-speedcontroller-p-402907.html or do you have any better suggestions?
  18. BTW Tim, What sort of flight duration do you get with that set up? SW Edited By steve watkin on 03/01/2012 17:27:49
  19. Thanks Tim,   That's the plane I'm going with, thanks for you reassurance re the batteries. Was in a 'past life' a fixed wing examiner so my aim is to pass the B again and try to get back to a reasonable standard of skill. Never going to be a hot shot but i would like to get back to somewhere near where I was before the 'change of life' !!!   SW
  20. Heeded your advise.Got myself one of these in the end:- Fusion LX61B Pro Eclipse AC/DC. A compromise between watts and pounds!! Good price I think,£75
  21. Can anyone help clarify the two different versions of this aircraft please? One has the part number of 10050 (the earlier one) and the latest is 10051. From looking at the pictures it seems like the newer one may have a slimmer fus but i'm not sure. Does anyone know the significant differences? There is a £20 to £30 price difference on the 'net. I am guessing that the cheaper ones are the older version. I'm going to be using this as an intro back in RC flying after a 5 year lay off so i will want to progress through to aerobatics as soon as i'm able. To that end I have another question. If I use the 3s 4500 lipo like suggested for longer flight times will it end up nose heavy and hard to trim for aerobatics? Normally nose heaviness is not too big a problem (as long as it's not excessive) as it's easy to add a little weight to the tail. Thanks in advance. SW Mid way down THIS post is recommended setup. 22. Posted by Ben B on 31/12/2011 22:15:42: a 50 or 80w charger will be tiresome. Please explain a little more. i thought that you charged these cells at 4.5A for one hour. Won't these do that? Or is it that you can charge faster? What's the difference in charge time between the two types? Sorry but here you have a newbie (to electric flight) who is trying desperately to understand!!
