  1. Many thanks for all your comments but to get this issue into perspective I would like to make the following comments. I have no wish to damage the reputation of any of the suppliers mentioned, I have had very good service in the past.

I had no problems with the grading from SLEC, it was only that I required some straight 4" width, (exactly that width), balsa of different grades for my project. It was very difficult to find any piece that was straight and true enough to use.

I would imagine that mail order supplys are always going to be a little inferior to self selection, the suppliers are never going to know your exact requirements. Also, as the price of balsa increases it must be a problem to provide value for money, a higher cost or a lower spec product.

Anyway, the concensus seems to be that I was probably a tad unlucky and therefore I will give SLEC another go. Thank you all once again for your input.

  2. I order more wood than I require knowing that some of it will not be up to the job. A while ago I received some wood from The Balsa Cabin and it was poor, most of it not straight or square and the grade was questionable.

The same order more recently from SLEC was slightly better but very dissapointing to say the least. Can anyone please advise me on a reputable supplier. I don't mind paying a little more if get what I ask for.

I may have been just unlucky but I really need my confidence restoring.

  3. I've followed this thread from day one and it's so nice to see a project from start to finish. You must be very pleased and I can only add my congratulations to all the others. It's a real treat to see such a great looking model fly so well.
  4. On the 7th May 2011 I received confirmation of an order for a back issue of RCM&E and a saw and on that date they took my money via paypal. I had the saw delivered but no back issue.

It was the 18th May when I reminded MyHobbyStore that I had not received my back issue. I had realised in the in the interim that I should have ordered June 2005 not June 2006 and requested the change. I had a phone call from MyHobbyStore and was asked to return any delivered magazine if it was an incorrect date.

    Nothing.

    Bear with me.

On the 6th June I reported that I had started a thread (Whoops!) with regard to a plan error in the current July issue of RCM&E. I had a reply that that they could not find me as a subscriber.??????? I replied with details and also reminded them that I had not received my ordered back issue.

I was then informed that they could find no record of the transaction with regard to the back issue.

What the hell is going on!! I can understand the odd mistake, we all do it, but this beyond any previous experience.

  5. Roger, where are you seeing info re a Hacker?
    I hope R-C have a viable backup

I had just ordered some bits from the company and went to look for some more. All I could see onscreen was this page stating that the website's security was poor and it was hacked in the name of a 'particular religion'. The icon for the site, on my browser, is still a turkish flag. It was round about Christmas/New year time I think, but with my memory......

  6. I have recently E-Mailed Nigel Hawes asking if the 'Fizza' and 'Whizza' kits were still being produced. This was the reply I received  :-

I'm afraid due to a change in personal circumstances I can no longer produce these kits.
Unfortunately I can't access the website to change it - sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.
However plans, canopies and CNC-cut motor mounting discs are all still available from the various suppliers!
    Best wishes,
    Nigel Hawes.

  7.   A transfer method I use is quick and simple but you need to be able to photocopy the plans, (or part of the plan). I have an AIO (All In One) printer that can print/scan/photocopy to A4 size. These AIO's are quite cheap these days.

For example;  To transfer a wing rib, I would photocopy the relevent part of the plan and cut round the photocopied rib with a pair of scissors. The paper template is then laid onto balsa sheeting and sellotaped down onto the wood, making sure plenty of tape is on the balsa.

You can then cut round the rib with a knife/scalpel, when the cutting is complete the template pops off. It now has a nice plastic coating and can be used again and again. The sellotape pulls off the balsa very easily with no damage sustained.

If you use the template again, reverse it and get a plastic coating on the other side. It works well for ply templates as well, especially if you want to use the sandwich method for multiple ribs.

The tape holds the template quite well and its easy to store your plastic template when finished. I tend to cut a little big and sand to plan size later as my cutting skills are not quite top knotch yet. Just curl the tape under and round if you want to use the balsa edge.
  8. Thank you all for your response, its good here isn't it? Just started using a simulator and managing to crash even the most basic of models so its sunk in that there is no fast route to R/C. I am improving, but its by degree. I have time and patience so that's what I'll throw at it until I'm comfortable.
  9.   I am astonished at the response, I am impressed fella's,  thank you very much. I will take on board everything you have all said.
I had a look at the Seagull and the Flair Cub and I must say that the Cub is one of the best looking trainers I have come across as well as great reviews. I would like to try electrics as I have zero experience with that as well as no R/C experience. The Cub looks like it was designed for IC only and I obviously have no conversion experience.  I will no doubt end up with both electric and IC. (Hopefully, eventually).

  10. Thank you fellas, one other aspect is that I used to enjoy building just as much as flying. I am finding that it is still possible to build in a traditional way so I thought that i might get hold of an ARTF foam trainer jobbie and build a next step model myself. Any idea's as to what would make a good next stage balsa/ply second model?

  11. Thank you for your advice, I am impatient to get going again but I do remember that I always used to say to myself, 'take your time, do it properly or it will cost'. So that's what I'll do, read a lot more, get a trainer. Thanks again.
