Sandy Colquhoun
We`re really fortunate to have a permanent lease at a very low rent to the council, our concrete runway, L shaped to give E-W and N-S approaches has lasted well over 30 years with little maintenance, though we had to dig a ditch to keep the boy racers off. Our biggest problem is age- most members are over 50, a few between 20 and 50, and only 6 youngsters. Our "hut" is 2 old steel shipping containers we got for the price of delivery, into which we cut window and door apertures and installed second hand fittings. A future annoyance notified to us last year is a wind turbine development, which will entail a turbine 50 m high+ blades 800 m to the east in a direct line with the runway, plus one to the west, not so much in line but only 500m away. No doubt we`ll adjust to changing conditions, there`s no alternative
Terry Walters
The good points: Nice quiet site with own track, fenced area for spectators, covered area, earth closet WC, concrete setting up tables. restraining posts with adjacent Tx stand, 90metre hard runway, no neighbours to annoy and with plenty of sun! About 30 members and plenty of opportuntity to fly 7 days a week - IC 10.00am to 7.00pm and electric at any time. Local authority are very supportive (RC flying is officially a sport in France). Membership of the club is about £20pa (National body/insurance around £50pa) The not so good points: Only one runway and the wind is usually a cross wind. The surface of the runway is loose tiny chippings which act like Permagrit sanding blocks (no jets!), no lush grass area only scrub, trees on the pits side cause wind to swirl and the runway isn't level and has a significant drop just before the runway which causes some interesting turbulence for arrivals and departures! It gets too hot in Summer. Some cyclists, horse riders and walkers ignore the "Private- no right of way" signs for the track that runs parallel to the runway whilst flying is taking place. But I love it and its only about 8miles from home Terry

The runway continues in limited use, it is now classified as 'unlicensed' and subject to certain restrictions related to wind direction and downwind turbulence. At least it sounds as though have a lot more clearance. Edited By avtur on 12/03/2013 22:57:
