Clive Moore
Does anyone know of a web site that gives clear details of British WW1 aircraft insignia.I am building a BE2e from a plan and cant get the detail on insignia design and positioning. In pictures I have seen of various WW1 aircraft some of the roundals on the fus sides and on the top wing seem to have a light outer circle and some dont. I'm not sure when they are supposed to and when not.Any one with any info?
Mike Rolls
Normally the outer white circle was applied where the roundel was on a dark surface - PC10, etc. - but not on a light one, such as the underside natural linen finish. However, 'normally', not always. Like you I have seen contemporary photos where the outer ring appears to be absent despite the roundel being on a dark surface. Safest thing is to find a photo of a specific a/c and go with what that shows.HTHMike
