Big Bandit
Hi all, This ones a bit fuzzy as it was scanned from a picy taken in 1980. This was one of my projects from that time, helping to build the thing along with a local business man who brought the plans back from the states. Power was an 1800 V.W motor rescued from an old van, with a KAVAN type 4 conversion to 2.1 litres. Basic wood and fabric (rip stop) construction, with a full ply fus. Twin Cessna mag at one end of the crankshaft with a direct prop driver on the front end. From memory it was a 41/2 foot x 24 inch wooden prop. The CAA inspector helped with all of the cable runs, as they were a total pig to get right. Aileron response was very poor to start with until I sealed the gap with Lexan sheet screwed to the under side of the aileron. Didn't need boot full's of rudder after that. Barry Tempest, the CFI at Leicester East did all of the check flight's and we got a ticket for a two seater from the CAA. Barry nick named it the fuming parrot due to Bobs idea of a funny paint job, and exhaust fumes entering the cockpit area. We took the two silencers of and that cured the fumes problem. Cheers, Chris.
