  1. Hi all, sorry i have not been on here for a while, work has been murder!   I have decided to go for a twin with electric motors. I have done lots of research and have decided to go for one of my real favourites a Tigercat by Ken Williams (US).   AUW will re about 2-2.5 kgs.  What motors do i need in terms of KV and some options would be helpful?  I intend running scale 3 blade props so an appropriate ESC reccommendation would alos help.   Thanks in advance
  2. Blmey, just goes to show what an untrained can do!  Fortunately it was a 40 amp ESC. Phew, not using that again!
  3. Lesson 1 - Don't disconnect the throttle from the receiver before disconnecting the battery.  1 cooked ESC later and this lesson has been learnt!   Lesson 2 - Always err on the side of caution with flight times as battery can run out quite quickly.  1 ditched Sea Fury and some work is now needed to put her right!   Question - I tried my 5 blade prop on the Sea Fury today. She wasn't anywhere near as fast and the battery lasted about half as long as with the 2 blade prop, hence Lesson 2!  Why is this?    Boy it sounded good though, kind of like the howl a mustang makes and it comes down in a gentle dive.
  4. Thanks Timbo that is exactly the answer i was looking for.   Mark
  5. Thanks for the replies guys.  I am going to be using them in a number of purchases that i have made over the past few weeks, as i appear to have been bitten by the bug!  I have bought an FSK MK IX Spitfire and an FSK Mosquito.  The latter is a long-term project that will not be flow for some time as I am still fairly inexperienced.  Why have i gone for aa advanced model prone to tip-stalling i hear you ask?  Well my grandfather flew them during WW2 and i would love to do this little thing to say that i am proud of him.  Even though he passed away 12 years ago my Dad would appreciate the sentiment.   I am just starting to now pull together the parts that i need to make them.  I have a 25A ESC and brushless motor for the Spit but nothing for the Mossie.  My radio setup is a DX6i so I need a whole bunch of servos, 2 AR6200s (I like to have everything working on mine, including retracts) and a pair of motors and ESCs.  The recommended kit for the Mossie is AXI 2212/34s and 18A JETI ECO ESCs but I quite like the EFlite kit as I have used it already on my Sea Fury and trust it.  That said I am not sure what motors I am going to need for scale-like flight?  A pair of Eflite 480s seems a bit powerful for scale flight and will make it more of an aerobatic machine!  I also have no idea how you are supposed to wire up two ESCs to one battery.  One assumes that you just connect the two ESC wires together and then add an EC3 connector.   So, to cut a long story short, the batteries are for quite high power, high discharge purposes.  To be honest, I think that I have answered my own question: I don’t want to risk my pride and joy falling out of the sky so I will stick with the branded expensive stuff.
  6. Thank you Simon and apologies to everyone else for my faux pas on linking, it will not happen again!
  7. Thank you David, that is what i was trying to do. Indeed your response is most helpful.
  8. Well, my first takeoff with an undercarriage as opposed to a hand laumch, and it went ok.  A couple of taxis getting faster and faster then building to a takeoff.  Heart in mouth, Sea Fury climbing nicely, the thing almost diappears from sight, it is that quick.  Leave the undercart down, more because i am not used to raising it!  Spend the next 8 minues trying to line up my first landing on a narrow tarmac track running between two fields.  Then realise that i ams tanding on the runway...... bugger.  Step back into field and try to bring it towards me.  Wind is strong enough to shorten my landing and reduce speed over the ground to make it a gentle one.  Veer slightl on landing, into the verge and a gentle nose over on the grass.  And breath again.   Lessons learned:   Get the thing off the ground quickly rather than have a long easy run nd gentle takeoff. Gentle inputs, be smooth, increase resistance on controls in a minute. Don't need full throttle, only half needed in most situations. Wear glasses next time, the Sea Fury is a bit fast! Land aircraft from left to right to better judge altitude and speed, rather than towards you. Don't panic and give big stick inputs during finals.   Finally, still got a battery question: When yo push to full throttle and the motor sounds like it is surging (as you would get from quickly applying then removing throttle pressure) does that mean that the battery is running out of juice?  I got about 10 mins from the battery, is that about right fo a Park 480 and a 2100mah battery running 6 servos?   Phew
  9. Hi all, it is a 2100mah so i am charging at 2.0.  i think that it is now charged, we shall see tomorrow if it falls out of the sky!
  10. Cheers Eric, i don't think that the battery is dead.  I have used the balancing lead to charge the battery which seems to have worked.  I have run up the motor and it runs well but i just don't have a great deal of confidence that i am doing it right!
  11. Right, i know that i am wasting everyones time but i seem to be having difficulties charging my eflite battery as it came with no instructions and nor did the charger (or at least none of any use).   I have a Parkzone lipo charger and an 11.1v 3S eflite battery.  The battery has two connectors away from it - one that is the main power connector and another 4 wire small connector.   I started by plugging in the small one which "balanced" the cells (I know that it is the balancing lead) and then charged it on the main power lead.  I then did all the testing during building and full power engine tests to make sure all was fine.  I was going for a maiden tomorrow so went to charge the battery.  I have read in here that you don't need to balance every time so i plugged it in to charge and the error lights on the charger have come on.   What have i done wrong?   It should be noted that after the first time that i "balanced" the battery the error lights were on but i thought that was my cue to start charging.   HELP!
  12. Thanks Timbo.  Is there an idiots guide to how you work out what your prop and motor combo require in terms of amp?
  13. The recommended motors and ESC for a Flying Styro Mosquito are AXI 2212/34s and 8 amp ESCs. Can i run them both off a single 40 Amp ESC? What other motors can i use?  Are they similar to Park 400s?  My eflite Sea Fury runs nicely off one and i was hoping to stick to one brand (in case of crashes!). Thanks in advance
  14. Plugs were upside down . What a rookie mistake to make. thank you for your help Timbo.
