  1. Hi Guys, don't know if I'm losing it but I've just been testing the throws on one of my planes, switched my TX on connected a 6v rx battery to a spare channel and the motor started singing?? no battery to the motor, I thought "that's odd" moved the throttle and the motor sprang into life, admittedly it wasn't turning fast enough for flight but it was still turning at quite a speed. I've never seen that before! Normally the motor just bleeps to say it's picked up the signal for the RX. Is this normal? After all these years have I been checking servos with my face near the prop and the motor can spring into life with a RX battery? John
  2. If you're not happy with giving full throttle on launch, the plane is designed to be chucked so I can't see it turning that much, type in to your browser bungee launch build and you will see loads of different ideas on building your own launch system John
  3. Just ran it up with a 12 - 8 three blader and got 760 watts at 61 amps, however in my quest to get more out of it I didn't consider the lipo's I was using and just puffed a 4s3 3000 20c up whoops, better get some new batteries that can handle the job or stick with two blades
  4. Messed around with props and the amp meter and I managed to get 620 watts pulling 54 amps with a 14-7 prop for each motor with nothing getting too warm, so I reckon that's 111 watts per pound so I'm gonna give it a go John
  5. Thanks Allan, I suspected as much, the plane is very scale like, with a 72 inch wingspan and very pointy tips!! I bought it 12 years ago but I threw the plans out after building and can't remember the brand. I do know it no longer exists, It is of a foam and ply covering construction with plastic nacelles, I'll have a mess around with different prop sizes to see if I can get anymore watts out of it. I'll post a photo and someone might be able to recognize the maker John
  6. I've an old ic Mosquito which I've converted to electric and I'm a bit worried about the watts per pound, she comes in at 11 lbs and each motor is pulling 490 watts, I'm not interested in flinging her round, would 980watts be enough for a sedate flight? Thanks John

  8. Thanks guy's,   I'll have a go at both of those ideas starting with the sandpaper first, Dave do I put the longer length of paper leading edge to trailing edge or tip to root?   Regards   John
  9. David,   I like the idea of moving the ailerons up a smidge, however on the Ripmax Mustang the ailerons are the same length as the whole wing, would I still be able to do it or is it just the end of the ailerons that need adjusting?   John
  10. Tim did you manage to do your  test flight?   does a CRANKSHAFT not belong to a car?? BEB   Don't want to put the cat among the pigeons, but surely the petrol heads have had their day? Electric has to be the way forward. Had a petrol head over to my house today and he gave the best he could for and Against, but he went away knowing he was beat!   John
  11. Chris, gonna try the old battery tomorrow, Thankfully I've another plane I can use the two new batteries on so it's not a waste of money.   John
  12. Thanks John,   I thought she would just drop a wing and stall, didn't realize that a tip stall could be that dramatic.   John
  13. Many thanks for the replies guys,   Seems that the general consensious is that the extra weight is causing her to roll out. However I took her up this morning and got the fright of my life. I slowed her down for a landing and at about 50 foot she flipped over on to her back with no input from my controls what so ever, luckily I had my wits about me and she was going fast enough to rectify it, but it  didn't half put the willies up me. guess it was just a glitch of some sort but it wasn't nice.   Regards   John
  14. HI Guys, bit of help needed if you would be so kind. I have a Ripmax mustang which I've been flying for two years. No problem with the flight characteristics, however I increased the size of my battery which is abviously heavier so I adjusted the battery to get the correct C of G, but when I took her up yesterday the flight was exactly the same apart from when she was in a loop. when she got to the top of the loop she rolled out to the right, try as I might I couldn't get her to do the other half of the loop without her rolling out. is this due to her being a bit nose heavy, or tail heavy? thanks in anticipation   John
  15. Blimey paul,   that's wadge of lead you've got up front there!! must admit I havn't balanced mine yet so I'll be looking on some church roofs soon.     John
  16. Thanks for the remarks guy's,   always nice to know that the hard work!!! is appreciated.   Nice job Will, are you going to put the cannons on? As a side note Allan, talking about watts per pound. you mention flying a P 47 on 650 watts, I have been flying a Ripmax Mustang for about two years now and never really bothered to check the power to weight ratio as I Bought it  with the motor installed as second hand and just assumed the builder would have put the right motor in. I installed a 70 amp ESC and I have been running it on a loong max 2250 4s, I have had nearly a hundred flights with it and it has been a dream to fly, not quite aerobatic but very scale like. Imagine my suprise when I put it on the wattmeter for the first time yesterday and found out it was pulling 56 amps at 850 watts!!!! It only weighs just under 3 pound with a 11x7 prop on. My thoughts were bloody hell, those batteries must have been put through the mill. And you know what I've been using the same two batteries for two years and they are only now just starting to reduce my flight times to about 7-8mins. Prior to this on half throttle (which is what she flies best on) I was getting 10-12 mins plus.   Give it up for Giant Cod that's what I say!   John
  17. Hi guys,   well it's stopped raining and results are; All up weight of 8lbs, 750watts per lb at 32amps, with a 14x7 prop, which I think give me around about 93 watts per lb.   please tell me that's enough to fly her?   Snaba the panel lines are just drawn on with a black biro but because I'm drawing over Poly c they give an indentation just like the real thing and look quite effective. The lettering decals I bought from www.pyramidmodels.com and they've got everything you would need for all different scale models. The roundels I did myself on the computer using Inkjet creative stickers, from www.photopapernow.co.uk  I draw them using autocad freestyle which is a free download from the net, and then just print them off.   Pyramid also do the roundels if you want to buy them but I like to make my own.   hope this helps   Regards   John
  18. Well,   she's just about finished, just got to box off the wheel wells and weather the wings and  that's one more project off the production line.   I recieved the batteries today to series up two 3s's and when it stops raining I'll give it a run up to see what I can ring out of it.   Hope you like it? I'm quite happy with the way the join line on the wing has worked out but it did take a lot of rubbing down to get it how I wanted it.   Next up, stop building and get them flying.   John
  19. Clansman Dusty!!!   I was playing with Larkspur until 1984, eeh them were days   John
  20. Yep, thats's it Timbo   only spent 22 years in the Royal Signals, worked with batteries all my life but still can't suss out parallel and series! or even series/parallel Still don't  know how I got the radios to work? I can remember lot's of sparks, but hey, I thought I was good!!!!   memo to me, Less red wine is good. Or is it? Regards   John
