  1. My apologies for regurgetating a previously flogged topic. I've been off the forum a while and didn't take the time to check, my bad!
  2. Will LHS's struggle to compete against the Might of the Chinese Importer? Now that HK have set up shop in the UK, are people shifting to the mail order market rather than browsing their LHS? Have you used HK, LHS, both, neither or all three? Only use HK, they are within my budget. My LHS is my only source, I like the idea of loyalty. I've used both HK and my LHS. I use a range of Online retailers to get the best deals. I don't have a computer and carve my models from oak with a small blade, the traditional way.   Don't know why I can't seem to find a Poll function for my buttons, if a moderator can edit the post and turn it into a poll that would be great.  Edited By Garthy B on 06/11/2012 08:48:28
  3. Here are some pictures for your assessment;   Plenty of yellowed Epoxy used here.   Some inside formers and the mounts for the upper wing. Again a fair bit of yellowed epoxy.   A central point of the wing. There are small gaps of light in between some joins. I believe these joints are to be skinned with balsa, anyway.   End of a wing here. It looks structurally ok, but a little dry?   There you have it, Your suggestions please.
  4. Rightly or wrongly, I have purchased a part built model from Ebay. It has been store for at least 15 years, but is straight as a die. My main concerns are based around the unseen condition of the wood, and the glued joins. Is there any way of testing the wood for moisture levels? Do glued joints get brittle after several years? Being an Eagle, it may get thrown around a little, errrhumm, so needs to be structurally sound. I like a challenge but am lacking the long term knowledge with regards, older models. i.e. What happens to joins and wood strength, etc. with age?   I've considered; a light internal spraying with diluted PVA? Applying CA to most visible joins? A small amount of epoxy to critical areas?   If anything is generally not a good idea, then please let me know.   A few constructive comments, and/or advice please.Edited By Garthy B on 16/08/2011 17:14:29
  5. Steve, I started with Heli's moved to Electric through EDF and out the otherside to I/C. It doesn't help that my most local club is 9 miles and a 30min drive away...the club I was using was 27 miles and a 45min drive! And I could only fly on weekends. All of these are excuses, I know, however I did drive to my usual field one sunny, calm summers day to find it deserted. Not a sole present, so I had to turn around and drive home...more than a little disheartening after you've packed the car, etc.  I think my underlying concern is that a winter left in the garage will kill most of my models. Cold, damp and wet  has already seen a forgotten foamy needing all of it's servo's replaced due to corrossion. That's why I was considering selling up.  I do like the idea of the robust super cub though? mmmmm
  6. I'm busy, it's windy, it looks like rain and 'it might crash like my Cap did', have meant that I've not had a bird in the air since just after the Scampton warbirds. It hasn't helped that a couple of the lads I fly with have left  me to work in the desert for a few months. I'm sure they'll be moderately upset to hear that I've lost the urge to fly, they'd worked with me from my beginnings to get my confidence up. Yet, without them and the outdoor season coming to an end, I'm sure that my interest in the hobby will be all but dead by next year. I've already sold my Aurora 9, and my two I/C aircraft will probably fall to the classifieds within the month. I am reluctant to sell up completely, but.......time will tell. What will it take for me to not give up all together?  There is still a hefty ember of interest in my heart for this hobby,
  7. Cheers Timbo for the links....had an idea this may have been an issue before! Mark, this is a problem with the sun behind me! As the day goes on though it becomes more of a side sun. I fly on an airfield and we tend to go up and down, regardless of wind direction. You do your best to avoid looking at the sun but at certain times it can't be helped. Poor weather can't win........overcast, windy and rain or clear skies, no wind and piercing sunshine! It doesn't help having fair hair and blue eyes, I'm just designed to be photosensitive I suppose.
  8. Had a beautiful mornings flying, with blue skies and a bright warm sun in the sky, yesterday. However, as the day progressed it became harder to concentrate on flying as my eyes started to sting and water. This later manifested itself into a migrane level headache and sore eyes(back of the eye sore.)I do fly with sunglasses, and with ESS safety glasses with a smoke lense. The reason for this thread is, what sunglasses are very good for flying with? A price selection; Value £5-£30, Mid £35-£100 and High £100 + might also be invaluable to others.  I'm sure it's been discussed before, but with the possibility of a bright summer of flying, I think this may be relevant now.  Your thoughts, Gents and Ladies?
  9. This one illustrates depth perception, and the power of optical illusion. That's my mate James doing the piloting bit. Aren't EDF's getting bigger!?
