  1. Some interesting points made here, thanks guys.
     
    In my limited time throwing models into the air (and onto the ground), I have learnt that a level chuck will always work better then a nose high "stall & fall". i never run with mine, just get myself braced comfortably & throw.
     
    The larger (hawker / SU-34) models which are both EDF, i launch at 100% throttle to give them half a chance. The light parkjets are a different story, usually 50-60% throttle is plenty & still indices a touch of torque roll on some.
     
    Easiest to launch is my little primejet 8, 17oz AUw, 350w & has a 3400kv motor spinning a 5x5 APC. This one will climb vertical a couple of seconds after launch, but is still capable of flying at walking pace - not bad for £4 worth of depron, a carbon rod & some cheap electronics.

    Well, i'm back again. i have never actually been away but rarely post because I have settled with the models i have & had plenty of "input" to satisfy my craving for knowledge. Replying to questions seems pointless when others do the job so well & have far more experience than i do.
     
    Hand Launching seems to be somewhat of a black art & a lot of people seem to have a lot of trouble with it ?? Dollys, bungie, etc seem to be the way to go, but at what size are the necessary ??
     
    My two largest planes are both EDF & hand launch fine if there is a breath of wind, hopefully the specs below will give a few newbies an idea of what is possible (& fairly easy).
     
    Lander hawker Hunter. 3.5lb AUW. 866mm wingspan. No retracts fitted. 6s setup producing about 850w through a lander motor/fan. Half flaps 7 a touch of wind this one leaves my hand with little more than a gentle push
     
    Sukhoi Su-34. AUW 3lb exactly. Twin 64mm EDF running 2 x 4s 2650 lipos. produces 500w on each fan, no flaps, no retracts. This one is slightly harder to launch but with the help of a "launch buddy" it will climb from the off without sinking (pretty fast too on afterburner )
     
    Does this mean that a 7lb AUW hunter with 1700w of power would launch ok ?? I guess not, presumably the power v span v weight curve isn't linear ???
     
    Needless to say, a few of my depron (spit) parkjets with 24" span & 1lb AUW / 350w launch like homesick angels

    Let's hope Tim gets a good dealer, i am a real fan of lander models & if they can be sold at the prices OL were sellign them at, there's no competition !

    are lander kits still available in the UK ?
     
    I bought a hawker Hunter kit from overlander last year & it's awesome - fantastic build quality, fast & stable - but OL don't seem to have them now
     
    I know Hobbyking are doing them (or maybe a copy) but with the kit cost + shipping it's more expensive than OL were.

    Does anybody know who is selling the lander range of jets now ??
     
    I bought a hawker Hunter earlier this year & it's awesome (for a foamie ) quite fancy their panther or F-16 (maybe both) but overlander don't seem to be stocking them any more

    that is a cracker ! I have downloaded quite a few of steve's plans & they are certainly good
    Very new to depron building myself, but I bought some part finished models & have had a lot of fun with a shumate SU-37 twin pusher.
     
    About half way through a Saab Gripen build but just can't get the canopy looking right, might just fly it "as is" & see how it does.
     
    Next project is going to be a raptor, i did start on a 75% size one but being my first build it was a bit too tricky (and small)
     
    Keep posting mate, very interested in your builds

  9. Yet again i find myself needing some advice from those with more knowledge than myself
     
    I need (quickly) a 6x4 standard, and a 6x4 pusher for my SU37. Anybody got a good supplier that sells "pairs" or at least makes it obvious what might work as a pair.
     
    I can find pushers, I can find standard, but not sure what would make a "pair".
     
    Also, a lot of APC seem to have the tiny hole in them - not ideal for me trying to mount them on a prop saver ...... or can I drill them out ?

    and WHY I think I need them .....
     
     
    I flew it yesterday and today & have just realised my problem with it is down to torque roll. I tend to turn fairly tight & then hit the power for fast passes & every time i do it, she drops a wing quite violently !! Thought it was me, but now pretty sure it's because i have two quite powerful motors with cheapo standard props.

    I see in another post you're a member of FMFC at Witcham ?
     
    i was a member last year & spent many early mornings at the field learning to fly (crash) with my HZ Cub. I havn't rejoined this year (yet) because i have less time, it cost me a fortune in fuel to do a 25 mile round trip daily, and I have a little local club here with a 12 acre field
     
    Some good guys at the club, especially Nick & Richard, always there to offer help & pretty relaxed, i might even join again later in the year if they don't lose the field !

    I am probably poking my nose in where it's not needed, but better to do that than see you get stitched up !
     
    I am sure that once you have left good feedback, you will have zero chance of a paypal claim if the seller decides to do a u turn.
     
     
    maybe tell the seller you will leave feedback IF he sends a replacement, either that or you will pursue the PP dispute. It's a hard nosed way of dealing with it, but it beats the other option.
     
    The best of luck whatever you decide, I am looking forward to seeing pics of it built

  13. More to add to my little hangar !
     
    Last weekend i was browsing ebay, as one does & saw a hangar clearout of various home built depron planes.
     
    To be honest, I wasn't too excited & put a lowish bid on a sniper just in case - and WON !!!
     
    6 airframes, some with servo's, none with esc or motors, won the lot for £43.11 I had to make a 100 mile trek to collect them but well worth the effort
     
    They are in various states of well used / damaged / half built, but so far I have got 3 good usable planes using only motors, esc's etc that i had in my collection (with the exception of two new motors purchased for the Suki)
     
    Star of the show is a SU-37 which has been fitted with two 2200kv motors & 6x5 props, pulling 460w on a good 3S battery, so i guess it's going to be a quick one !
    Ready to test whenever the weather permits.
     
    A nice but very well used 24" wingspan eurofighter, popped my old roo jet motor on it & it's pulling 250w on a 6x4, so with a flying weight of 17oz, i think it should be entertaining
     
    Fokker DR1 - not my bag normally but i love this little toy. just hope I can fly it !
     
    Still in the shed waiting for a clear operating table, I have a part built Vulcan, a F117, and a cub trainer. Plenty to keep me amused when there's no repairs of upgrades to do
     
     
    OK, so they are only "squint" scale & made from depron, with props hanging off the back, but looking at the video below of my Suki, i can see some entertaining times ahead (NOT me flying, this was Mikey that I bought it all from)

  15. Brilliant post & so much of it is true. I am 50, so have some fun memories the late 60's through to 81 when i turned into a responsible adult LOL
     
    As for the post above this (Terence) ........ 5.4 ltr V12 TT Diesel ....... I keep looking but can't see the problem I'm no BMW fan but that WOULD be on my shopping list if I could afford it !

  18. You're right about the magic smoke BEB, mine did it on the first flight.
     
    Esc's dumped & replaced with plush 30A, and a standalone 10A bec too. Why they cut corners & use this junk I have no idea, must be just to sell as cheap as poss.

    BTW - i agree 100% with sharpie & forgot to mention that after having a bit of difficulty, I have fitted a larger nose wheel which fould on the fuselage when retracting, but a bit of fuse trimming with a blade sorted that.
     
    It might not be "scale" now, but I would rather have one that takes off ok than a lovely scale looking plane that keeps falling over !    My new nose wheel is about 25% bigger than the mains, which obviously keeps the nose high for take-off as a bonus

    i didn't realise the units were all the same breed, that makes a lot more sense now
     
    Not quite sure how the guy on the GC review got such high figures, maybe he has a dodgy meter ??
     
    I guess those Rhino packs are pretty good, one of the 3D foodmixer pilots at my old club used nothing but them. I always buy tgy or flightmax because they use my favourite XT60 plug (saves me soldering them). Looks as if rhino use XT60 too, so maybe they are an option.
     
    I doubt I will be flying as fast as you, so with a bit of management on the sticks, maybe I can squeeze 5 or 6 mins if I'm lucky (and the F-15 is lighter, also seems a less draggy airframe).
     
    To be honest, if I thought the el-cheapo fan unit in it now would stand the pressure, I would leave it alone ! It's tipping the scales @ 710 grams loaded with a 3s/2200, pulling 410w max & flying half flat out & the other half throttle shut or low, I can get 5 mins. pretty quick too - will see if i can get a little video at the weekend if the wind allows.
