  1. I built a West Wings Orion as my first glider and fitted a tow release in the nose for aerotowing. It is a great plane that's easy to build, light and thermals well with little lift. I thought gliding would be boring but quickly got hooked on the challenge to make each flight longer than the last. Somehow I think that the challenge would be lost if it had a motor on the front.
  2. I have the same problem . Can anyone else access it?
  3. No lead but the CoG is probably as far back as I would like to go. If it turns out to be a bit tail heavy I'll get some longer bolts and add some more spacers behind the motor but I'll see how it flys at the weekend first.
  4. All up weight including 3S 1300 lipo came out at 767g and with a 10x6 prop it pulls 220 watts which is about the limit of my 1300mah battery.
  5. Not a removable hatch just my dodgy covering that I haven't cleaned up yet. I plan to push the battery in through the hole in the underside if I can reach. The ESC is a Hobbywing Platinum 40A ESC and the motor a C3536/09 KV910 both from Giant Shark. I plan to use a 3S 1300 battery. I will have a look later at the prop and weigh it a bit later. The motor looks a bit big but it does need the nose weight. I haven't flown it yet. Here are a picture of the servo setup. I should have moved them forward an inch or two.
  6. The motor I fitted was quite a bit bigger C3536/09 KV910 I still haven't got around to flying it yet... maybe this weekend.
  7. Looking good. I have one of the earlier ones with a solid tailplane and had to space the motor off of the firewall to get the cog correct. In retrospect sanding more balsa from the rear of the fuselage, cutting holes in the tailplane (now standard) and moving the servos forward would have helped.
  8. I've been looking for a new charger to charge multiple packs. I think I will be going down the parallel charge route that Tim has mentioned. Is the only downsides I can see is being limited to multiple packs of the same cell count and not monitoring individual packs independently.
  9. I would agree with Steve. I fitted a 3S 1000mah battery from the bottom (see pics) which was a mistake because the battery exited mid flight. Whoops! RIP Mini Tyro If I was to build another I would form a hatch on top in front of the wing for the battery and use a 2S and smaller motor to reduce weight and improve the glide angle. .
  10. I took the plunge and brought one of the .30 size OS 3825-750 brushless motors. I have to agree with Ken they are very well made and well packaged. The OS motor is very quiet when running which I guess indicates that they are better balanced than the cheaper motors and possibly have better bearings. The only down side is unlike the other motors it can only be rear mounted. I have only had one motor fail, a Turnigy mounted in a Tony Nijhuis Hawk. The addition of a new tighter fitting cowl caused the motor to over heat due to inadequate cooling. The motor failed in a puff of smoke at the top of a long vertical climb causing the most perfect flat spin to the ground luckily the model survived unharmed.
  11. Same here, open areas are fine although it can be a bit strong when it shrinks and can cause warping.   I found just using the iron gave better control of the shrinking process.   The white glue lines that can appear on the edges are removable with acetone.
  12. I use it. Its quite good and the price is right plus it comes in 5m rolls.   I buy a few rolls at a time from HK but for the odd roll GC works out cheaper because of the postage.
  13. Hi Alef,   I fly at the Croydon Airport site off Purley Way. It's one of the few public sites left which is good because membership doesn't get any cheaper.   Just turn up one weekend. I'm sure one of the guys will help you out.
  14. Does anyone have any experience of the OS brushless range and how they compare to the equivalent Hacker or Hyperion motors?   The OS range is priced a little cheaper and from what I can see mount one way only.
  15. Thanks again Jon,   I'll be joining in August
  16. Jon,   Great info.   I will be in Moraira in for the summer so this would be ideal.   How much does the membership cost and would I need an A cert to fly fixed wing.   Thanks, Peter
  17. Also consider an ST Models MX2.   They fly really well just reinforce the undercarriage a bit before take off.
  18. There used to be a club in Moraira just up the coast but its now a Lidl. I'm not sure where or if they relocated but there may be something on the web.   I think mayor hobbies are the nearest model shop in Santa Pola just south of Alicante.   If you find out where to fly could you post it here.   Thanks Pete @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
  19. @import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css); I also took apart a HobbyKing Turnigy TGY-90S a while back to see what I got for my $4.99. see here it turns out they are labelled TowerPro inside. "   I have been using these in the ailerons of a 48” EF Edge and the wings and of a Tony Nijhius BAE Hawk. They take a pounding every time the hawk belly lands and they haven’t failed yet. I originally used them in the rudder of the Edge too but the overshoot on extreme throws caused the rudder to collide with the elevator so I swapped the rudder servo out for a Savox SHO255 and this cured the problems. I didn’t take the Saxox apart but the machining of the final drive spine was a lot more accurate and crisp.   Edited By Pete H on 07/11/2011 22:57:59 Edited By Biggles' Elder Brother - Moderator on 07/11/2011 23:49:00
  20. I managed to fly the Tyro today. It flew well and even my little nephew had a go on the buddy lead. Following an unplanned landing that resulted in a broken prop . I changed the prop to 9x4.5 which increased the power to 125w in turn making the plane much nicer to fly. It was a little bit windy so trimming it out will have to wait but it seemed to turn smoother if a bit slower on rudder only but I can’t be sure because it was getting blown around a bit. @import url(http://www.modelflying.co.uk/CuteEditor_Files/Style/SyntaxHighlighter.css);@import url(/CuteEditor_Files/public_forums.css);
